Sights of Phuket Island (Thailand), what to see and what to do

Article and Section Navigation

Phuket is a big island, and there are plenty of attractions and entertainment here. Here you can find both natural attractions: beautiful bays, mountains, waterfalls, wild jungles in the national reserve, and historical and cultural monuments: temples, museums, monuments. Any tourist will find here what his heart desires. There is only one nuisance in the sights of Phuket: there are too many of them to see them all in one trip on the island.

In most cases, you will have to get to the sights by rented transport, by taxi, or by buying an excursion, since public transport on the island is underdeveloped, and you will lose a lot of time traveling by local buses. To be honest, if for some reason you cannot rent a transport to travel on the island, then it is cheaper and more convenient to visit the sights as part of organized group excursions, which can be purchased at any travel agency in tourist areas, than to travel independently by local transport. In addition, some of the attractions traditionally considered to be Phuket and visited during a holiday on the island are actually not on the island, but on the mainland or on nearby islets, and it is certainly much easier to get to them as part of an excursion. Well, the sights located on the neighboring islands will not be able to get there on their own at all, except to hire a charter boat, which will be very expensive.

We have prepared an overview of some of the most popular and interesting sights of Phuket so that you have some idea about them, and also indicated the way to get to them if you still decide to visit them yourself. You can get full information about all the sights already on the spot.

Phuket Museums

  • Thai Hua Museum

    Thai Hua Museum

Thai Hua Museum is located in the center of Phuket Town in the heart of Chinatown. It is located in a beautiful European-style building, built in the early 20th century originally as a school for Chinese children. Today there is an excellent exhibition dedicated to the history of Phuket, including the history and life of the local Chinese diaspora. Part of the museum is preserved in the same form as it was during the existence of the school here.

The museum and the exhibition as a whole are interesting and worth visiting. If you are even a little interested in the story, be sure to check it out here.

  • Thalang National Museum

    Talang Museum

Thalang National Museum in Phuket was founded in 1985 by His Majesty Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It is dedicated to the history of Thailand, and, in particular, the history and modern life Phuket.

In total, there are 6 halls dedicated to different topics and different periods. The main hall at the entrance tells about the history of Thailand from prehistoric times to the present day. Gallery No. 1 is dedicated to the first settlers of the island and its natural resources. The second gallery tells about the famous battle with the Burmese invaders at Thalang. Gallery No. 3 tells about the Chinese roots of Phuket, and in the fourth about all the other nationalities of the island.

A separate exposition on the street in the courtyard of the museum is dedicated to the tsunami of 2004. If you don't know about it, you can mistake this part of the museum for a dump of old things. But in fact, they tried to recreate the consequences of the tsunami, namely what was left after it.

In general, the museum is interesting and informative: there are detailed inscriptions and explanations in English for the exhibits, a museum plan with a brief description is issued with a ticket. But the exhibition is small, the entire inspection will take no more than half an hour. What's worse, photography inside is prohibited.

    Practical Information

  • Seashell Museum (Phuket Seashell Museum)

    Phuket Shell Museum

Actually, the name of the Phuket seashell Museum speaks for itself. A huge number of all kinds of shells and large shells are collected here, and in general, the exposition of the museum leaves the most favorable impression. For example, there is a shell weighing more than 500 kilograms, ancient shells many millions of years old, etc. The owners of the museum claim that they have collected the largest collection of seashells in Southeast Asia, and there are more than 20,000 of them here! In general, we recommend this place to visit, especially if you have settled on Rawai beach.

  • Phuket Mining Museum (Phuket Mining Museum, Kathu Mining Museum)

    Phuket Mining Museum

The name of this museum can also be translated as Phuket Mining Museum. As the name obviously implies, it is dedicated to the mining of minerals on the island, the main of which was tin. In the past, Phuket was one of the tin-rich areas, and this greatly influenced its history, since this metal used to be in great demand. After getting acquainted with the exhibition, you can confidently say that Phuket would not be as multinational and with such a rich history as it is now if it were not for tin.

The museum was opened on the site of a dried-up mine, which is now also part of the exhibition. In addition to individual exhibits in the form of coins and ore items, many separate scenes with mannequins about the mining process and simple life have been recreated. On the street you can see the restored parts of the mechanisms and devices used in mining.

In general, this museum is for an amateur, besides there is little information in English, but if you suddenly find yourself not far from it, then why not look here.

Temples of Phuket

  • The Big Buddha

    The Big Buddha of Phuket

The statue of the big Buddha of Phuket is located on Naka Kerd Mountain at an altitude of 370 meters in the southern part of the island. This is a relatively new attraction, and it is still being completed. Despite this, the place is already open to the public and there are always a lot of tourists here.

The height of the statue is 45 meters and it is perfectly visible from the open spaces on the southern beaches. Today it is one of the most popular and large-scale attractions in Phuket. Almost no sightseeing tour of Phuket is complete without arriving here, and we also recommend that you definitely visit this place.

There is something to see here, because a temple is attached to the statue, which is also still under construction, as well as an observation deck from which you can view the island 360 degrees from a bird's-eye view (recall, the statue is located at an altitude of 370 meters). The size of the statue is impressive, as are the views from above, but it is important to get here in good clear weather, and then you will be able to see not only Phuket itself, but also the surrounding islands.

  • Chalong Temple (Wat Chalong or Wat Chai Tararam)

    Chalong Temple

Chalong Temple (full name Chaitararam) is not just a temple, but a whole temple complex, and the most important in Phuket for the island's Buddhists, and the place of their pilgrimage. In one of the buildings of the temple there is a real shrine – a part of the Buddha's bone. It is on display to everyone in a glass ball inside a large glass sarcophagus. It is definitely worth a visit as one of the most interesting and colorful sights of Phuket.

The temple gained fame thanks to Luang Pho Something – initially a monk, and then the abbot of the monastery (from 1876 until his death in 1908). Luang Pho Than is known as a talented healer and chiropractor. Every year a fair is held in the temple, but the time of its holding varies from year to year. During the week, the territory of the monastery resembles a market, where crowds of local residents walk all day and especially in the evenings.

  • Wat Phra Thong Temple

    Phra Thong Temple

Phra Thong Temple in Phuket is one of the largest temple complexes on the island. It is so big that there are even signs on the territory, and at the entrance you can see the plan, however, it is completely in Thai. It is located in the northern part of the island away from the popular resorts of Phuket. It is also one of the oldest temples on the island. In 1909, it was visited by King Rama VI, who gave the temple its current name.

The temple is famous for the golden statue of Buddha, called Luang Poh Phra Thong, which appears to be half a torso with a head. In our opinion, one could call this statue a bust, and of very impressive size. According to legend, the statue was found by local peasants buried in the ground, and no one was able to dig it out completely, so the temple was built around a part of the statue that was dug out.

💵Entrance fee / ticket price: admission is free.

🚶 How to get there: the temple is located in the north of the island (temple on the map of Phuket). You can get here only by rented transport or taxi.

Other attractions in Phuket

  • Karon Observation Deck (Karon View Point)

    View of three beaches

Karon Observation Deck (Karon View Point) in Phuket is also sometimes called and marked on maps as Kata View Point. Indeed, this site is located next to Kata Noi beach, and Karon Beach is quite far from it, although it is perfectly visible from there.

The site offers a gorgeous view of all three beaches: Karon, Kata and Kata Noi. Many people come here to meet the sunset, because it is on this side of the island, in the west, that the sun goes below the horizon. Also from here you can see the statue of the big Buddha on the top of the mountain. The playground is well equipped, there is a gazebo and free Parking. There are several restaurants nearby (there is one Russian restaurant right next to the site, and another Heaven Restaurant a little further towards the shore), where you can sit and spend the sun over the horizon.

  • Promtep Cape Observation Deck and Kanjanaphisek Lighthouse

Promthep Viewing Platform (Promthep View Point)

This is the most popular observation deck, which offers spectacular views of the coast and the beaches of Janui and Naiharn. There are always a lot of people here, including locals, and in the evenings before sunset tourists are brought here by whole buses. The playground is well equipped, there is a mini market with food stalls, several restaurants, including those with sea views. There are a lot of interesting things here besides just beautiful views, and we recommend that you definitely visit it. What's good, visiting the site is included in many sightseeing tours, and it's especially good if you manage to get here shortly before sunset and spend the sun over the horizon. Keep in mind that sunsets in Thailand take place from 18 to 19 hours, depending on the time of year, and are very fast, literally 5-10 minutes.

The most active tourists can go down directly to Promtep Cape, which juts out into the sea and offers even more spectacular views along the coast, but be careful: the descent is not equipped, high waves are also dangerous.

  • Similan Islands (Similan Islands, Similan Islands)

    Similans

They say that it is impossible to visit Phuket and not swim to Similan in any way, otherwise it will not be a full-fledged trip to Phuket. The main thing is that you have enough money and time for this pleasure. By the way, you can get to Similan not only from Phuket, but still the largest number of excursions goes there from Phuket.

The Similan Islands are a group of islands located off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. There are nine islands in total. The islands are a National Park of Thailand. Access is not allowed to all islands.

Similans are compared with paradisiacal islands for good reason. It is generally recognized that here is the best diving in Thailand, the landscapes are incredibly beautiful, and the beaches are simply heavenly. There are no hotels on the islands, and if you go there for a few days, you can spend the night in a tent camp or on boats off the coast of the islands.

It is easiest and cheapest to visit Similan as part of a group or individual excursion. Usually, the one-day excursion program includes an inspection without disembarking several islands, snorkeling (or diving, depending on the tour program) off the coast of the island, disembark on one or two islands for lunch and stay on the paradise beach. The two-day excursion also includes an overnight stay in the camp in a tent or overnight on board a boat off the coast of the island.

    Practical Information

🕐 Working hours: it should be noted that during the period from May to October, the Similan Islands are closed to the public, and excursions during this period, although organized by some small travel agencies, are kind of illegal.

💵Entrance fee / ticket price: the cost of a one-day excursion to Similan starts from 1800 baht. The price includes a transfer, a fee for access to the National Park, rental of snorkeling equipment, lunch. It should be borne in mind that if you get to the islands on your own, you will have to pay 500 baht for access to the National Park for every day you stay on the islands.

🚶 How to get there: Similans are located about 100 kilometers north of Phuket (Similans on the map of Phuket). You can get here yourself by driving to the pier closest to the island by land, and then hiring a boat, but it is much cheaper and more convenient to visit the islands as part of a group or individual excursion.

This is a big family attraction with various games, carousels, shops based only on historical Thai motives.

The magical park "Phuket Fantasy" resembles Disneyland, only in Thai style. This place is steeped in Thai culture and traditions.

To get a good look at the show, it is recommended to buy tickets for the "golden seats". Photo and video shooting during the show is prohibited. The prices for souvenirs are too high. • The Kingdom of Tigers (Tiger Kingdom Phuket)

    The Tiger Kingdom of Phuket

The Kingdom of Tigers (Tiger Kingdom Phuket) is a relatively new attraction on the island. In this tiger zoo, you can get very close to these cats from young to old, touch them, take pictures with them. Most tourists leave this place in complete delight and with positive impressions. But it should be borne in mind that the animals here are kept in cages, and all this is just an attraction for tourists.

Tigers are represented here of different ages, kept in different cages. Payment is made separately for entering each cage (prices are different, the smallest cubs are the most expensive), but there is also a comprehensive visit to several cages.

Some tourists believe that cats here are under the influence of medication, so they are so calm and sleepy. But the owners of the park claim that this is because tigers are naturally nocturnal animals, and they are always sleepy during the day.

There is a buffet restaurant in the park (450 baht per person). If you have no one to ask you to take pictures with tigers, the park provides its photographer for 500 baht. Children under the age of 15 are allowed in cages with tigers only with the permission of park staff. And yet, there are long queues here during the day, you will have to wait a long time, so it's better to come here early in the morning.
