Kata Beach in Phuket is located 31 km from the airport on the west coast of the island (Kata on the map) just south of Karon Beach. The coast of Kata Beach is divided into two parts: the big Kata or Kata Main Beach and it is also Kata Yai, and the far or small Kata or Kata Noi. Kata Noi is located 500 meters south of the big Kata and is separated from it by a small cape (Kata Noi on the map). You can walk between the beaches by road, but the coast is interrupted by a rocky cape. The most developed of the two districts is the big Kata. On the small Kata, the infrastructure is worse developed, but the beach is much more deserted. But the districts are so close to each other that even if you stay in a hotel on a small Kata, you will not notice any difference, and everything you need on a large Kata will be accessible on foot.
The Kata area as a whole is an even quieter and more peaceful place than Karon, although, objectively, the beach here is more crowded in high season. There are no night discos here, and there is practically no debauchery like Bangla Rd in Patong, although there are bars that work late. This is a quiet place for a family holiday, and perhaps one of the most successful for families with young children. The whole area is surrounded by hills and wild rainforest. At the same time, there is all the necessary infrastructure for a tourist: you can easily find currency exchangers and banks, small shops (there are no shopping centers here), many travel agencies, and, of course, cafes, bars and restaurants. There are plenty of hotels in the area too. Almost all the entertainment here is concentrated on the beaches, and there is almost nothing to do in the area during the day. In the evening, you can stroll through restaurants or sit in one of the bars.
Directly big Kata beach is not as extensive as Patong, with a length of just over 1 kilometer, the width of the sand strip is very large, sometimes more than 50 meters. The sand is very fine and pleasant, almost white. The big Kata is perfectly protected from winds and waves by the surrounding hills and capes, so the waves here are small, especially in high season (from November to April), which makes it one of the most popular and safest for holidays with children in Phuket. During the rainy season (from May to October), the waves get bigger and it becomes popular with surfers. The bottom of the big Kata goes under the water very smoothly, and therefore swimming here is considered safe even for children, but it is impossible to swim here at low tide, the water goes far away. There are all the traditional beach activities, sun loungers, cafes with access directly to the water. The main road in the area runs far from the beach, but a small paved road runs almost directly to the sandy line, and they even manage to drive cars to the sand. At the northern end of the beach there is a small Koh Poo island, next to which there is a coral reef that can be viewed while snorkeling or diving.
Small Kata has a length of just over 500 meters. It is even more clean, beautiful and secluded than the big Kata. The whole beach is dotted with sun loungers, but there are almost no beach activities here. Cafes and restaurants are available. Winds and waves are stronger here.
Get to Kata Beach you can walk from the neighboring Karon Beach, as they are practically adjacent to each other. From Patong Beach, you can get here by taxi or tuk-tuk for 200-400 baht (see Thailand's currency and exchange rate). A taxi ride from Phuket Airport will cost from 800 baht and will take about an hour in time. Minivans are also sent here from the airport for 180 baht.
If you can't afford a taxi or tuk-tuk, then you can get here cheaper by local bus, but you will have to make transfers. From the southern part of the big Kata district, from the stop at the intersection of Kata Rd and Pakbang Alley, approximately every 30 minutes from 06:00 to 16:40, the only local bus runs for 35 baht to Phuket Town to the old bus station. On the way, he passes through Karon Beach, but not to Patong Beach. Travel time is an hour. Using this bus, you can get to the area from the airport or Phuket's new intercity bus station, but only with transfers. To do this, you need to get from the airport to the old bus station in Phuket Town for 100 baht (schedule here http://www.airportbusphuket.com/index.html) and then transfer to this bus. From the new bus station to the old one can be reached by regular tuk-tuk for 10 baht. To get from Patong on this bus, you can also get to Phuket Town first on a similar bus for 30 baht, and change there. But in terms of time, this route will take you at least 2 hours. Learn more about bus stations and about transport in Phuket.
There are plenty of Hotels on Kata Beach. There are almost no high-rise hotels here, but you can find several expensive hotels with their own territory on the first line. In the center of the big Kata district, you can find a lot of inexpensive hostels from 400 baht, and this is where you should go if you want to find inexpensive accommodation on the spot. The cheapest accommodation should be sought in small alleys away from the beach. Considering that the Kata area is gaining more and more popularity every year, we recommend booking accommodation here in advance during the high season (from November to April).

To summarize about the beach and the Kata area. This place is highly recommended for those who love silence, nature, or came on vacation with family and children. There are all conditions for a tourist holiday here, including restaurants, exchange offices, shops, travel agencies. The beach here is also wonderful. The only thing that is not enough here is night entertainment and daytime entertainment outside the beaches. The disadvantage of the beach is the crowded high season, and every year there are more and more people.
