  • Through the city of Surat Thani

The other nearest airport is located on the mainland in the city Surat Thani (Surat Thani Airport on the map), and it is much cheaper to fly to this airport by local budget airlines Air Asia, Nok Air, Lion Air and Thai Smile. Here the price starts from 1000 baht one way when buying tickets in advance, and it is more profitable to buy round-trip tickets right away. Keep in mind that Air Asia, Nok Air, Lion Air now fly from the old Don Mueang Airport, and Thai Smile from the international Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. If you arrived from Russia to Bangkok and plan to continue your journey to Phangan using Air Asia or Nok Air, you will still have to get from the new airport to the old one (how to get from Suvarnabhumi to Don Muang, here).

NokAir and air Asia sell package transfers on their websites, including airfare, delivery from the airport to the pier, and then a ferry to Thong Sala Pier (Thong Sala is the main city on Phangan Island) starting from 1900 baht (currency of Thailand, exchange rate). This is one of the cheapest and most convenient ways to get to the island.

But even if you are flying with another airline, it is easy to buy a transfer to Phangan at Surat Thani Airport for 700 baht (including bus + ferry). Such transfers are sold at the counter inside the airport, but you can buy them in advance and on the website http://phantiptravel.com, and there you can also find out the current cost and schedule.

  • Through the island of Phuket

Sometimes, but very rarely, there are very cheap (even cheaper than before Bangkok) flights from Russia to Phuket. If you become the owner of such a ticket, then you can easily get to Phangan via Phuket Island.

From Phuket, you can get to Phangan for 500 baht by buying a combined bus+ ferry ticket at a local travel agency or on the same Phantip Travel website. Their buses depart from Phuket's new bus terminal twice a day at 08:00 and 09:00, 12 hours on the way. But be prepared for a lot of transfers on this route, possible divorces and the imposition of affiliated hotels on you. In general, Phantip Travel has not proven itself very well on this route.

You can also use the transfer of a more reliable company Lomprayah. Their transfer costs 1400 baht. It is carried out from the company's office in the center Phuket town. Ticket reservations and schedules are available on the company's website http://www.lomprayah.com/ and through the search form.

From Phuket airport you can get to the center of Phuket Town by taxi for 800 baht or by bus for 100 baht to get to Phuket old bus station. Further from the old bus station to the Lomprayah office can be reached on foot, and the new bus station can be reached in 10 baht by bus.

  • Via Bangkok

Usually the cheapest way to get to Phangan is by flying to Bangkok, and then continuing on by bus, by rail, or using a composite route by bus + by water. Learn more about how to get from Bangkok and Bangkok Airport to Phangan here.

To Phangan by bus

From Bangkok and other cities in Thailand, you can get to Phangan by bus. Usually the way to Phangan by bus runs through the city of Suratthani, but there are also buses that go directly to Donsak Pier, from where you can immediately take the ferry.

If you arrive at the bus station in Surat Thani, you can purchase a comprehensive transfer there (bus to Donsak Pier + ferry to Phangan, from 320 baht), or make this journey yourself, which will not be difficult. However, it is much more convenient to immediately purchase a joint ticket directly to Phangan. It includes the cost of a bus ticket, a transfer to the marina and the cost of the ferry. In this case, you will not have to puzzle over how to get from the bus station on the spot, and not adjust the bus routes to the time of departure of the ferries. Such combined tickets are sold directly at the state bus stations of major cities in Thailand. As usual, we do not recommend using the services of private travel companies in Thailand.

Beware of the traditional local wiring upon arrival in Surat Thani by bus. Its essence lies in the fact that during the bus approach to the city of Surat Thani, a "well-wisher" gets on the bus to you, who advises you to get off before the final stop, since it is from here that you can transfer to the bus to Koh Samui, Phangan, etc. Another option is when a person behaves like a company representative. As a result, you find yourself in the middle of nowhere away from any transport, but then a taxi or tuk-tuk appears, ready to take the vaz where you need it for a round sum.

Remember! If you bought a ticket for a regular bus at a bus station (and not a tourist private bus), then you should get off at the final bus station of Surat Thani, or at least in the city center.

To Phangan by train

You can get to Phangan by train from Bangkok, Hua Hin, with a transfer in Bangkok from other popular cities in Thailand, as well as from Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Langkawi) and Singapore. For more information about the routes, see the information "Trains of Thailand: traveling by train in Thailand".

Of course, the train does not go to the island itself, but drops off passengers at the Phun Pin Railway Station near Surat Thani (Surat Thani railway station on the map. Night trains from Bangkok are especially convenient. They are sent to 17:05, 17:35, 18:30 , 19:30 and 22:50 from Bangkok's main railway station Hualamphong and arrive in Surat Thani early in the morning. The fare will be from 150 for a seat in the third class (not recommended), 600 baht for the second class (like our reserved seat, but better, we recommend), and up to 1500 baht for a compartment.

Minwans and buses depart from the railway station all the time during the daytime to Don Sak Pier (see below), from where it is already possible to reach Phangan by ferry.

It is much more convenient to get there by train if you buy a combined ticket (Joint ticket or Combine ticket), which includes a train, a transfer to the pier and a ferry. Such trains depart from Bangkok at 17:35 (train number 173), 18:30 (train number 167) and at 19:30 (train number 85). Whichever train you choose, you will arrive at Phangan anyway at 12:30.

You can purchase a combined ticket at Hualamphong Station at the ticket offices or at travel agencies. It is recommended to purchase in advance. There is no electronic sale, but on the site http://www.thailandtrainticket.com/ you can book and purchase a paper ticket online, which you will then receive from a representative at the station or it will be delivered to your hotel in Bangkok. You can check the current schedule at https://www.railway.co.th.

Phangan by ferry and boat

The final stage of any route to Phangan will be a water crossing by boat or ferry. If you have purchased a comprehensive transfer with an end point in Phangan, then you have nothing to worry about and everything is organized for you by the carrier. If you get there on your own, then you can get to Phangan by water from the Don Sak pier (Dongsak Pier on the Phangan map), from several marinas on Koh Samui, from Tao Island and from the pier in Chumphon. The closest is the pier on Koh Samui, a little further away is Donsak and Tao Island, and very far away is Chumpon. On Phangan, most ferries arrive at the pier in Thong Sala (Thong Sala Marina on the Phangan map).

There are several carriers on Phangan, there are some:

  • Lomprayah. http://www.lomprayah.com/
In addition to transfers from Bangkok, Hua Hin, Phuket, Krabi, the company also offers to use its catamarans to get to Phangan from Koh Samui, Tao Island, from Surat Thani and Chumpon. The entire schedule is available on the company's website, you can also book tickets there. Catamarans of Lompraya are quite expensive, but it is also the fastest way to get to the island by water.
  • Raja Ferry http://www.rajaferryport.com/
These ferries depart five times a day from Donsak Pier to Phangan and back. The ferry transports passengers (220 baht per person) and transport (280 motorcycle, 620 car with driver) in 2 and a half hours. Ferries depart from Donsak 7:00, 10:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00. Transportation to Phangan Island, what to use to travel

There is no public transport on Phangan. To move around the island, you can use a minibus (Songthew), rent a motorcycle or bicycle, and hire boats to move between the beaches of the island.

A fixed–route taxi (also called Songteo, Songthew) is a truck converted for passenger transportation. But here, unlike the rest of Thailand, they work mainly as taxis, and do not move along established routes. But they can pick you up along the way when they are already traveling with passengers and you need to go in the same direction. The cost of the longest trip on the island should cost no more than 250 baht, while a trip for a short distance usually costs 100 baht. Payment is made for the whole car, not for each person. If they call you too high a price, you need to bargain or look for another taxi.

The ideal way to move around the island is to rent a motorcycle. In order to rent it, it is not necessary to have rights, although according to the rules they should be. But it's still better to have at least some rights than none. Russian rights in Thailand theoretically work, but the problem may arise due to the lack of category "A" when driving a motorcycle. Learn more about renting motorcycles in Thailand here.

Renting a motorcycle in Phangan costs a little more than on the mainland. You will have to pay 200 baht for an automatic scooter, but you can and should bargain, especially if you take it for a long time. You can rent a motorcycle in almost any hotel and guesthouse, on the street in tourist places. Motorcycle rental is also available at the pier in Thong Sala, so as soon as you arrive on the island, you can immediately rent a transport and drive yourself to your hotel in Phangan.

To drive a car in Thailand, tourists no longer need to obtain an international driver's license (IDP). On May 1, 2021, the long-awaited event finally took place - Thailand ratified the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, which it initially joined back in 1968. And now in Thailand, theoretically, it is possible to manage rented transport using ordinary Russian rights. However, so far in Thailand there has not been a practice of adopting national VUS on the roads by police officers, therefore, in order not to finish off our rightness every time, we still recommend that you additionally issue an IDP. For more information about renting a transport in Thailand, read here.

The cost of renting a car in Thailand starts from 600 baht when booking for several days. You can find and book a car for rent using the search form and compare prices from different rental companies:
