Weather in Pattaya in August: what to expect
August in Pattaya is a continuation of the rainy season, but with an important difference from September: downpours here most often occur at night or in the evening, not during the day. Mornings and early afternoons are usually sunny or partly cloudy.
Statistically, in August there are about 10 days when the sun shines almost all day. But even on other days, there's often sunshine, especially in the mornings – rains usually come in the evening or at night. Even on cloudy days, you can get a tan – the UV level in Thailand is very high year-round.

Important! As in any other month of the rainy season, August weather can bring surprises. One year you might get just a couple of rainy days, another – a week of downpours. But on average, August in Pattaya is drier and more stable than September, so many tourists choose this month for a budget vacation.
Sea and beaches in August: can you swim
Yes, you can swim, and this is one of August's main advantages. The water temperature stays at +28…+30 °C – it's practically warm milk. The sea is warm and comfortable for swimming for both adults and children.
The problem is rather different: due to seasonal winds and rains, the water near the shore can be murky, especially on the central beach.
Additionally, in August-September, jellyfish sometimes appear in the sea off the Pattaya coast. Dangerous "box" jellyfish (box jellyfish) appear only after severe storms. Regular small jellyfish become more active in the heat and sting more often. If you see dark slimy lumps on the sand – it's better not to enter the water. After swimming, be sure to rinse off with fresh water, otherwise your skin will itch all evening.
As for the condition of the beaches, Pattaya's central beach may not be in the best shape during the rainy season. It's better to choose Jomtien Beach – it's cleaner, longer, and the water there is often clearer. However, in August, Jomtien becomes a popular spot for kitesurfers and windsurfers – the winds are stronger during this time than in other months. This can be both a plus (spectacular) and a minus (windy in some areas).
Hack: If you want clear water for swimming and snorkeling, head to Koh Larn Island. On the more remote beaches (Tien, Samae), the water often remains clearer than on the mainland. But keep in mind: during strong waves, the water gets murky even there. You can also consider Military Beach (Sai Keo) with its white sand and gentle entry into the water.
What to do in Pattaya in August: alternatives to the beach
If the sea is rough or it's raining – no problem. Pattaya has plenty of entertainment that doesn't depend on the weather:
- Shopping malls – Central Festival, Terminal 21, Mike Shopping Mall. Shopping, cinemas, food courts with air conditioning. In August, it saves you not so much from rain as from the heat.
- Sanctuary of Truth – a giant wooden structure on the shore. Especially atmospheric in rainy weather.
- Nong Nooch Tropical Garden – a botanical garden with elephant shows. Many areas are covered.
- Tiffany's or Alcazar Show – famous transvestite cabarets.
- Museums – wax figures, Madame Tussauds, Bottle Museum.
- SPA and massage – an ideal plan for a rainy day.
- Cartoon Network Amazone Water Park – has indoor areas.
In the evening, even in the rain, night markets operate – Thepprasit and Rompho. They're partially covered with tarps, and the atmosphere and prices are worth it.
And in August 2026, Pattaya hosts interesting festivals:
- Pattaya International Film Festival (August 22–30) – free film screenings, red carpet, outdoor cinema, creative markets.
- Tasty Fest (August 14–25, Terminal 21) – a food festival featuring popular restaurants, including Michelin-starred ones.
- Thai Street Gold Star Roadshow (August 9, Central Pattaya Beach) – over 100 street food corners, free entry.
And if you want to leave Pattaya for a couple of days? During the rainy season, it's interesting to go to Kanchanaburi – the waterfalls there are fuller, and the River Kwai looks especially picturesque. Hot springs work year-round. If time permits – you can head north to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai: they have their own microclimate, rains are shorter, and the nature after downpours is simply fabulous. Or just go to Bangkok – there are enough museums and temples there for several days.

Tourist reviews of Pattaya in August
Opinions from those who have already vacationed in Pattaya in August vary. Here are three different reviews:
"My family and I were there in August, and the rain didn't spoil our vacation. The kids swam in the pool when it rained. In August, prices are lower and there are fewer tourists. And the rain really does last 15–20 minutes. For me, Pattaya in August is much better than Phuket."
— A family from Moscow
"We were in the first half of August – 14 days of vacation and we never saw prolonged rain. The main advantage is fewer tourists, prices 20–30% lower, and no scorching heat."
— Ekaterina, Saint Petersburg
"We went in August – it was very humid, rains came every day for 2-3 hours. Not recommended if you don't like humidity. The sea was murky, didn't feel like swimming. Only malls with AC and spas saved us."
— Andrey, Yekaterinburg
Most often in reviews, tourists seem satisfied. But a lot depends on luck with the weather and personal tolerance of high humidity. For example, we once left for a mini-trip north to Chiang Mai in August because we got tired of the rains here.
Where to go in Thailand in August: Pattaya or Phuket
Many tourists choose between Pattaya and Phuket in August. Let's compare:
| Criteria | Pattaya | Phuket |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | Less rain, downpours mostly at night | More rain, monsoon downpours |
| Sea | Calm, but can be murky | Strong waves, swimming may be unsafe |
| Prices | Lower, accommodation and food cheaper | Higher |
| Entertainment | Huge selection of indoor activities | Fewer indoor options |
Conclusion: in August, Pattaya is preferable – less rain, calmer sea, lower prices. On Phuket, swimming is only allowed in some bays when the water is calm, and safety is determined by flags – red prohibits entering the water. Pay attention to them.
If considering alternatives outside Thailand, Nha Trang (Vietnam) is also in the rainy season in August. However, in terms of entertainment variety and developed infrastructure, Pattaya wins.
