General information about Koh Lan Island

Koh Lan Beach

Small Koh Lan Island (Ko Lan, also Koh Larn, also coral island) located 10 kilometers from the coast Pattaya (position of Lan Island on the map of Thailand). This is the most popular island for day trips or trips to clean island beaches near Pattaya. The island is very tiny, only 4 and a half kilometers in length. Nearby there is also a similar island of Ko Phai, but it belongs to the military and overnight stays are prohibited there, so tourists do not visit there as often as on Koh Lan.

Koh Lan is rarely considered by tourists as an independent resort, but rather as an addition to Pattaya beaches or one of its attractions. Most often, tourists visit Koh Lan in the form of day trips or independent trips to its beaches, which are considered much cleaner than the city's Pattaya beaches. Less often, guests stay overnight on the island for one or two days or longer.

Meanwhile, Koh Lan is a completely independent resort with its own infrastructure, beaches, hotels and attractions. Although, to say that this is a very interesting place for a long stay would not be entirely true. And about the cleanliness of the beaches, tourists do not always compare urban beaches and beaches on Koh Lan objectively. The beaches of Naklua and Jomtien may well compete in cleanliness with some of the beaches on the island (it's not about the cleanliness and transparency of the water, but about the cleanliness of the sand on the beach). Anyway, some of the beaches on Koh Lan are not suitable for swimming at low tide and become simply dangerous because of the sharp rocks. But the realization that you are on the island does its job, and absolutely all the beaches of the island seem to many tourists to be no better than Pattaya. And the fact that every day in the morning huge crowds of tourists from Pattaya go to the island and occupy the beaches does not always benefit the cleanliness of the beaches.

Prices on the island are much higher than on the mainland. Depending on the season and the beach, you will have to pay 50-100 baht for a chaise longue (currency of Thailand, exchange rate). Beer on the beach costs 120 baht.

Anyway, if you happen to be in Pattaya, you should definitely visit Koh Lan Island (especially since you can do it for a mere penny, read below how), and then you can conclude for yourself whether you liked it there or not.

Entertainment and attractions of Koh Lan Island

The popular beaches of the island offer vacationers all the typical water activities: jet ski, banana, parachute, kayaking. You can get a massage, tattoos, etc. In some places you can do snorkeling and even diving, for which there is a rental of equipment and boats for diving. There is even a shooting gallery on the island in the village of Na Ban.

There are almost no attractions on the island, but you can see the only temple on the island, visit one of the observation decks, which offers views of the island or Pattaya. You can also go up to the site next to Hat Ta Waen beach, where the Buddha statues are located.

How to get to Koh Lan

Fast boat to Koh Lan

You can get to Koh Lan by purchasing an excursion in Pattaya, as well as by yourself on a high-speed boat or by ferry.

  • Excursion to Koh Lan. An excursion to the island for one day will cost an average of 1000 baht, but you can find it cheaper. This price usually includes a transfer from the hotel to the place of departure of the high-speed boat, a high-speed boat there and back, lunch and sun beds.

  • Speed Boat. High-speed boats to Koh Lan depart both from Pattaya Bali Hai Pier and from almost anywhere on Pattaya Beach. The cheapest high-speed boats on the pier, the cost of the trip is 150-400 baht per person in both directions. On the beach, you will have to pay for hiring a boat entirely from 2000 baht.

The advantage of a high-speed boat is that it will take you to the island in just 15-20 minutes, and take you to the best beaches of the island. Minus – of course the price.

  • The ferry to Koh Lan is getting ready to depart

The ferry. Ferries to Koh Lan from Bali Hai Pier Pattaya is the cheapest way to get to the island. The cost in one direction is only 30 baht, and the time to sail is 40 minutes. Ferries depart several times a day. The last ferry from Koh Lan returns at 17 o'clock, and you should not miss it, otherwise you will have to spend the night on the island or pay a lot of money for a high-speed boat to the mainland.

To use the ferry, just come to the pier twenty minutes before the ferry departs and buy a ticket at the ticket office (the ticket offices are located in the marina building), and go look for a boat at the pier without wasting time, since it's quite a long way to get to the boat, and even it will have to be found (usually departing boats always have a lot of people and everyone goes to this boat). If there are no tickets at the box office, then feel free to go to the pier to look for a departing boat and buy tickets from the ticket collector at the entrance to the boat. In the opposite direction, tickets are purchased only at the entrance to the ferry, there are no ticket offices on the island.

Ferries arrive and depart to the island usually from Hat Ta Waen Pier on the west coast, but some also dock at Na Ban Pier on the east side. Be sure to specify which pier the return ferry you need will depart from (this can be done in the pier building, everything is drawn and written there, including in Russian).

Ferry schedule to Hat Ta Waen Pier as of November 2012:

    • From Pattaya to Koh Lan: 08:00, 09:00, 11:00, 13:00
    • From Koh Lan to Pattaya: 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00

If you arrive at Hat Ta Waen Pier, you will immediately find yourself on the beach, you just need to walk a little. You still have to get from Na Ban Pier to one of the island's beaches, which can be done by motorcycle taxi for 30-50 baht or by minibus. If the beach you are going to is sparsely populated, be sure to arrange with the taxi driver to pick you up and take you back to the pier. Communicating with taxi drivers is easy enough: each of them has a map of the island, and you can just show where you need to get there.

If you wish, you can rent a bicycle or motorcycle near the pier and get to the desired beach on your own or ride around the island. But it is necessary to contact the rental of a motorcycle on the island very carefully, since there are frequent cases of claims to pay for the damage that previously existed on the motorcycle when returning the equipment.

Beaches of Koh Lan

Hat Ta Waen crowded beach on Koh Lan Island

The main part of the beaches is located on the west coast of the island. It is almost impossible to swim on the east coast, there are rocks everywhere.

  • Hat Ta Waen. This is the most popular and crowded beach on the island, because it is the easiest to get here. It is located right at the Hat Ta Waen Pier. As a result, it's pretty messy. The beach has a length of 1 kilometer. There is a full set of water activities, many cafes and souvenir shops, motorcycle and bicycle rental. Deck chairs cost 50 baht.

  • Hat Sang Wan. This tiny beach is also located next to Hat Ta Waen Pier, only on the other side of it (to the south). It is also easily accessible, but the deck chairs on it are already worth 100 baht. There is also a cafe and some water activities (jet ski and banana).

  • Hat Samae. This is definitely one of the best beaches on the island. It is quite popular and crowded, with a length of 700 meters. There are water activities and cafes, taxi drivers are constantly on duty. The water is very clean, the entrance to the water is convenient, there is sand everywhere, there are almost no stones. Tourists are mainly brought here by high-speed boats and excursions.

Hat Sang Wan Beach on Koh Lan Island
  • Hat Thong Lang. This beach is located next to the island's most popular beach Hat Ta Waen, but there are a little less people, entertainment and cafes. This beach does not stand out as something particularly remarkable: the beach is like a beach, no better or worse than Hat Ta Waen, if only a little cleaner. You can get to the beach from Hat Ta Waen and the pier on foot if you walk along the shore along a dilapidated path.

  • Hat Thien. One of the best beaches on the island, even despite its crowded and popular. The beach has a length of 400 meters and is always filled with vacationers, but in moderation. There is very clean water here, convenient access to the water, little influence of tides. There are cafes, restaurants, water activities. Sun beds are available for rent at 50 baht. There are reefs on the edges of the beach, near which you can swim with a mask and watch the underwater life. You will have to get to the beach from the pier by motorcycle taxi or minibus, or sail directly to the pier by high-speed boat.

  • Hat Nuan (monkey beach). This beach is also known as Monkey Beach. You can really see monkeys here sometimes, and that's why it's popular. Monkeys are not here all the time, but usually only in the morning, when it's not hot yet. The beach itself is of dubious quality: it is sandy, but the bottom is rocky in places; during low tide, sharp rocks are exposed, sea urchins come across in the water. The length of the beach is not more than 300 meters. There are sun beds, no entertainment except cafes. The only plus of this beach is its sparseness and the opportunity to chat with monkeys, but this is how lucky you are.

  • Hat Ta Yai (Hat Khong). This tiny beach with a length of only 100 meters is located on the northern tip of the island, and is one of the most secluded. There is practically no infrastructure here, except for sunbeds. It is precisely because of its privacy that the beach attracts some tourists. The beach is suitable for swimming only at high tide, and at low tide the rocky bottom is exposed.

Hotels on Koh Lan Island

Unfortunately, the bulk of Koh Lan hotels are concentrated on the eastern side of the island, where there are no beaches. Only a few hotels are located directly on the beaches, for example: Sukkee Beach Resort on Hat Ta Waen Beach, Xanadu Beach Resort Koh Lan on Hat Samae beach and several hotels in the north of the island near the beach.

You can find and book accommodation on Koh Lan Island on these sites or through the search form. All sites have a Russian interface and Russian-language customer support, a lot of reviews from real guests.
