  • Genoese fortress of Sudak

    Fortress in Sudak, Crimea
    View of the fortress

The fortress is the main attraction of Sudak and one of the most interesting historical buildings in the eastern part of Crimea. Compared to , the fortress of Kafa in Feodosia has been preserved and restored much better, respectively, and it is much more interesting to visit it.

The modern fortress was built by the Genoese in the period from 1371 to 1469, but initially the defensive structures on this site appeared much earlier: scientists have established that since the middle of the 7th century there was a fortified Byzantine city of Sugdea — the trade, economic and political center of the region.

Today, the territory of the fortress city is open to tourists as an open-air museum. In addition, at a certain time, you can join a group with an excursion service, which is much more interesting than an independent inspection. Additionally, you can visit the numismatics Museum; the Historical Museum; the museum of "instruments of Torture" (temporarily closed). You can also shoot arrows on the territory of the museum. With the coming to power of the Communists in the 20th century, the temple miraculously escaped destruction, although an order had already been received to destroy the holy place. Water Park
    Water Park, http://www.freepik.com/

It is believed that this is the best water park in the Crimea, and indeed from 2007 to 2013 it received the title of the best in the region according to the results of an independent consumer rating.

This is an open-air water park, respectively, it works only in the warm season, in high season. There are a large number of slides for all ages (a group of extreme slides, a group of slides "for everyone", a group of slides for descending on double "cheesecakes", a children's pool with a group of children's slides, a river with a current), a children's area, a cafe, a swimming pool.

The flip side of the popularity of the water park is a lot of people and high prices. It takes a long time to wait in line for the roller coaster.

It is better to go in the morning, because after lunch there are queues on each slide. But keep in mind that it is cool here in the morning, and in general it is better to go in hot weather, otherwise you will freeze.

    Cypress Alley in Sudak, Crimea
    Cypress Alley in Sudak

Cypress Alley is the most popular tourist place in Sudak. This is a pedestrian street, along which there are many cafes and restaurants, bars and clubs, stalls and shops, travel agencies and ticket counters and excursions. Music sounds from everywhere, entertainment and photos with animals are offered, barkers invite you to taste alcoholic beverages. Here, at any time, you can join in the entertainment or just watch the fun from the side, slowly eating dinner in one of the cafes. Of course, fun does not always reign here, but only in high season and especially in the evenings.

  • Alchak-Kaya

    Alchak-Kai Trail in Sudak, Crimea
    Walk along the Alchak trail

Cape and Alchak-Kaya Mountain (Alchak Rock) are located to the east of Sudak, just outside the city. This place has the status of a state reserve, but anyone can visit it, and, today, for free.

The mountain is an ancient coral reef with a peak height of 152 meters. On the slopes around the perimeter, a tourist ecological trail has been cut and equipped, sometimes towering over the sea, then descending directly to cozy coves. On the western slope, at the entrance to the trail, there is an "Aeolian Harp" - a through rock with a hole formed as a result of weathering of the rock. You can walk along the trail both independently and as part of an excursion, but there is no great point in going here with a guide, the trail is too simple and short. Special training and equipment will not be needed here, you just need to stock up on time, water and a little strength. It is better to put on good shoes, it is very difficult to walk in beach slippers. The length of the trail is about 800 meters in one direction and the same amount back, which will take no more than an hour and a half. To see the "Aeolian Harp", you will have to climb to a small height on a very steep ascent, which not everyone can do.

Unfortunately, the popularity and free nature of the trail made this place poorly maintained, dirty, garbage is everywhere.

    Practical Information

🕐 Working hours: it is better to visit during the day or in the evening before sunset to look at the city in the dark (but you need to take a flashlight with you, it is dangerous to walk in the dark)

Here, at the entrance to the trail, a little higher is the "Aeolian Harp". It takes 15-20 minutes on foot to get from the Cypress Alley to the entrance to the trail.

  • St. Elijah's Church

    St. Elijah's Church, Crimea
    St. Elijah's Church

This Christian church is famous for being the oldest operating on the peninsula. Its construction dates back to the 9th-11th centuries. The Greeks built it, and they were its first parishioners. The architecture is not at all like the Russian temples with domes we are familiar with, there are none here. The building looks rustic, without exterior decoration.

    The Golitsyn Trail

The Golitsyn Trail, also known as the Falcon Trail, in our opinion, is the most interesting attraction of the village. This is a mountain walking trail near the village, cut down on the slopes of Mount Koba-Kaya (Mount Eagle) in 1912 on the occasion of the arrival of Tsar Nicholas II by order of Prince Golitsyn.

Today anyone can walk along the trail, the cost is 100 rubles. The entire route is 5.47 kilometers and passes through the territory of the Novy Svet Nature Reserve. It will take from 2 to 4 hours to overcome it, depending on your physical form. During the walk, there are wonderful views of the bay and the village, including from observation decks. Royal Beach

This is one of the most beautiful beaches in Crimea. It is located on the territory of a protected area, and theoretically access to it is prohibited, but in fact there are a lot of people there in good weather. Because of this, the beach is more beautiful than suitable for swimming and relaxing. • Novy Svet Champagne and Wine Factory

    Novy Svet
    Novy Svet Factory

For the sake of visiting the Novy Svet plant, people come to the village for an excursion even from the farthest corners of the Crimea. This is not surprising, because the wines and champagnes of this plant are unique and among the highest quality.

The founder of the plant in 1878 was Prince Golitsyn. He set out to create a drink that is not inferior to the best French samples. You can find out how he did it by visiting the factory. To do this, anyone can participate in special educational and sightseeing tours directly to the production. During the tours, the history of the plant is told, the stages of production are shown, and a tasting of products is held. Of course, after the tour, it is offered to purchase the original products of the plant.

  • Mount Falcon and the source of St. Anastasia

    Novy Svet
    Sokol Mountain

It is said that Mount Sokol (Kush-Kaya) is the oldest coral reef in Europe. Anyway, this is one of the highest points in the area, its height is 474 meters. There are many climbing routes of varying complexity to the top, and these routes are one of the most interesting entertainments during a holiday in the village. You can climb both on foot on the simplest route, and on a complex one using equipment. The walking route to the very top takes 3-4 hours, and the same amount of time will be needed for the descent, so a full day should be allocated for all visits to the mountain. You can climb on your own if you have experience of such routes, but it is better to find an experienced guide with you. Be sure to use comfortable hiking shoes, stock up on water.

On the way to the top, about in the middle there is another attraction - the source (spring) of St. Anastasia (Nastasinsky) with the purest drinking water.

View from the Karaul-Oba trail to Cape Kapchik

The Karaul-Oba mountain range is located to the west of the village, towards the beach of Veselovskaya Bay. This is the territory of the Novy Svet Nature Reserve, through which a popular hiking route passes along the mountain. On the route you will see a juniper grove, magnificent mountain and seascapes. On the route there will be another attraction - the staircase of the Brands cut into the rocks, whose age is more than 2500 years. This staircase will take you to the "Peak of Space" from where you can see almost the entire coast from Yalta to Sudak. Assandra Fortress, Crimea
This is all that can be seen on the fortress

The Assandra Fortress is located on the outskirts of the beach in the village of Veseloye, and it is difficult to attribute it to the sights for which it is worth coming here to see it. Unfortunately, this attraction is abandoned, not guarded in any way and is gradually being destroyed by a few tourists and locals. Today you can only see the collapsed walls, their contours only vaguely resembling a fortress. Nevertheless, if you find yourself on the beach of Veselovskaya Bay or you will take a walking route from the Novy Svet to the village of Veseloye along the trail through the top of the Karaul-oba, it's worth a look here.

The fortress dates back to the first century BC, and did not last long, only until the beginning of the first century AD. Its ruins were discovered only in 1982. It is assumed that the fortress belonged to the Bosporan Kingdom.

  • Choban-Kule Tower

    Choban-Kul, Crimea
    Choban-Kule

Choban-Kule (also spelled Chaban-Kule, Choban-Kale) is the ruins of a 15th-century castle in the vicinity of the village of Morskoye, Sudak. The name translates as "Shepherd's Tower", but this is not the original name, which is lost. The castle and the tower were built by the Genoese brothers di Guasco, there were residential buildings around, there was a church. It did not last long and was abandoned even before the Turks encroached on the castle.

Today, the great watchtower is best preserved. The remains of the walls are scattered around it. Unfortunately, neither time, nor locals, nor tourists spared the ruins, since this place is not guarded in any way.

There is nothing much to see here except the tower, and it will take no more than fifteen minutes to inspect it. But from above there is a stunning view of the coast, you can see everything from Cape Meganom to Bear Mountain (Ayu-Dag). Read more about Choban-kule and photos.
