What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Cathedral of St. Lazarus in Larnaca, Cyprus
Cathedral of St. Lazarus in Larnaca

Church of Saint Lazarus (Church of Saint Lazarus or Agios Lazaros) is the most famous church in Larnaca and a must - see attraction. It was founded in the IX century, as it is believed, on the place where St. Lazarus of Bethany was buried in a tomb. This saint was one of the friends and followers of Jesus and is known to have been resurrected by the master 4 days after his death. His relics are displayed for worship by the faithful in this cathedral. There is a holy spring where you can quench your thirst or take water with you.

During its existence, the church was a mosque and a Catholic Church, and was significantly rebuilt. Today it is largely restored, and its architecture has little in common with the originally built temple. Tourists can freely visit it, for this purpose even an excursion is provided, although it is more intended for believing pilgrims than for tourists. If you do not belong to the Pilgrims, you can freely visit the temple, including inspecting and photographing it from the inside, provided, of course, that you do not interfere with the believers. Also do not forget to go down to the basement of the temple, where the Tomb of the saint is located. The entrance to it is inside the temple. Also at the temple there is a small museum of religion and history.
