Exchange rate in Cyprus
The main and official currency of the Republic of Cyprus is the euro, in the northern occupied part (Northern Cyprus) the main currency is the Turkish lira. Due to the collapse in oil prices in 2020, the Russian ruble has greatly "sank" against both currencies.
To quickly recalculate the amount in your mind from euros to rubles, multiply the cost in euros by 8 (more precisely, 8.5) and add zero to the resulting amount, for example 3 euros * 8 = 24. Add zero at the end, we get 240 rubles.

- 10 евро (EUR) = 829,81 rubles (RUB)
- 1 US dollar (USD) = 0,86 EUR

Real currency exchange rate *
- 1 US dollar (USD) ≈ 0,84 - 0,86 EUR
- 1 euro (EUR) ≈ 0,98 - 1,00 EUR
* - The real exchange rate is calculated taking into account the fees charged by exchange offices and banks for the exchange. It can also be higher than the calculated one, but if you are offered an exchange rate lower than this, it's a reason to think about finding another place to exchange.

To quickly recalculate the cost in Turkish lira in the amount in rubles, you need to multiply it by 1.2. i.e. for example, 20 lira * 1.2 = 240 rubles. It is even easier to add zero to the amount in lira on the right, and then add double the amount in pure lira, i.e., for example: 500 lira = 5000 (added 0) + 1000 (double the amount in pure lira) = 6000 rubles.

What is the currency in Cyprus
The main part of the developed resorts of Cyprus is located in the southern part of the island (republic of Cyprus, or Greek Cyprus). It is here that most tourists and travelers spend their holidays, and package tours are also sold here. Here, the only official currency is the euro (EUR). Only it is accepted in payment in stores, travel agencies, hotels.
In Northern Cyprus, the main currency is the Turkish lira (TYR), but in all shops, restaurants and hotels you can also successfully pay in Euros, US dollars and the British pound. Change will be given to you in Turkish lira at an acceptable rate, the same as in banks or exchangers. Learn more Read more about Turkish lira here.
What currency to take with you to Cyprus
It is best to go to Cyprus immediately with euro cash and with a bank card in this currency. If you plan to visit Northern Cyprus, you can take Turkish lira with you if they are left after a trip to Turkey.
If you have dollars or Pounds Sterling available before the trip, then you should not change them at home to euros, since the conversion of cash will take place at a very unfavorable rate for you through rubles, and you will lose much more than if you change them in one of the exchange offices in Cyprus.
At the airport and exchangers in resorts, you can change rubles, but the rate will not be very profitable. For example, in one day the exchange rate of rubles in Cyprus was 87 rubles (the exchange rate in the exchanger at Larnaca airport), while in the Russian Federation it was possible to buy Euros for 84 rubles. It is more profitable to exchange rubles for euros at home.
Where to change currency in Cyprus
Currency exchange in Cyprus can be done at the airport, exchange offices at resorts, in banks. For exchange, you may be asked to present your passport. Some exchange offices for the exchange withhold commission, check this before the exchange.
All major world currencies, as well as the ruble, can be exchanged in Cyprus for euros or Turkish lira (in Northern Cyprus). But, as we mentioned above, it is better to convert rubles to euros at home. But dollars and pounds are more profitable to change here.
The best rate can be found on the streets in exchange offices and shops, look for them on the signs. The course at the airports of Cyprus on arrival is extremely unprofitable. For example, in one day for 1000 dollars at the airport on arrival gave 815 euros, while on the street you could get 860 euros, i.e. losses would amount to 45 dollars!!! The same situation with the ruble: at the airport, one euro cost 95 rubles, in the exchangers on the street 87. However, the exchange rate in the departure terminal is much better, and almost not inferior to the street. At least, this is true for Larnaca International Airport, so if immediately after arrival you definitely need to change money, it is enough to go up to the second floor in the departure area and make an exchange there.
Import and export of currency to Cyprus, restrictions
The amounts of cash or Traveller's cheques imported and exported are unlimited. But when entering from non-EU countries, cash in any currency and traveler's checks in the equivalent of more than 10 thousand euros must be declared. This requirement applies only to cash currency, which is what you have on a bank card (or rather, in a bank), customs officers are not interested.
ATMs and bank cards in Cyprus
A bank card of the international payment systems Visa and Mastercard in Cyprus can be freely paid both in the Republic of Cyprus and in Northern Cyprus. Cards of the Russian payment system Mir are only planned to be launched in early 2020 by RCB Bank terminals. But even after the launch, it will be possible to pay them only in those institutions that have an RCB Bank terminal, so it is better not to count on the Mir card especially, and have a Visa or Mastercard with you.
You can pay with a card for purchases or services in Cyprus almost everywhere, but there are some restrictions. So, some small shops do not accept cards for purchases of less than 10 euros (they set this threshold themselves, it can be much higher), so it is better to always have cash in reserve. In small villages, in particular in the mountainous region of Trodos, you can use a plastic card in rare places, cash is preferred here.
Payment by bank card in shops, hotels, cafes, for car rental, at gas stations in Cyprus is made without additional commission. The commission will be retained only by the payment system for converting from rubles to Euros, but it will be approximately within the same limits as buying cash at home, so even ruble Cards are quite acceptable for making small purchases. Even better, if you have a debit card in euros, then there will be no fees at all. Debit bank cards in euro currency with free maintenance or with a minimum cost of maintenance are issued today by many Russian banks, and some banks offer to make online conversion from rubles to card currency through an application or internet bank, which is even more profitable than cash purchase of euros.
Be careful when paying, as some sellers may use the Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) system without your knowledge. This is a system of payments by plastic cards, which for the convenience of card users displays the purchase price immediately in the currency of the card. ie, when paying with a ruble card for a purchase in Cyprus in euros at the payment terminal, you will see the amount immediately in rubles. This is convenient, but when using DCC, there is a double conversion, so your losses from the purchase can be up to 5%. To avoid this, check before entering the PIN code or touching the contactless card of the terminal, so that the amount on it is displayed strictly in euros. If you see the amount in rubles, ask the seller not to use DCC.
As for cash withdrawals at local ATMs, the banks themselves do not withhold Commission for the withdrawal operation. But depending on the conditions of your bank, a commission for withdrawing cash may be withheld, clarify this issue at the rates of your card. Please note that many Russian banks now advertise cards with free cash withdrawals around the world, however, when considering the tariffs in detail, it turns out that this is a special offer that is valid only for the first 1 or 2 months, so be careful.
Tipping in Cyprus
Tipping in Cyprus is not mandatory, so they will not be expected from you anywhere. In some restaurants, tips are included in the bill or the cost of meals in the form of a service fee.
The situation is slightly different in Northern Cyprus. Tips are also not required here, but it is customary in a taxi to round up the amount in a big way, you can refuse to change in a restaurant, or leave some money for cleaning a hotel room with a maid. But again, all this is optional, and depends only on you.
