Northern Cyprus or the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (UK) is a state unrecognized by the world community, occupying part of the island of Cyprus. From the point of view of the Republic of Cyprus (ROK) and all other countries, Northern Cyprus is legally considered part of the Republic of Cyprus, but de facto it has not been controlled since 1975. The only country that recognizes Northern Cyprus and actually controls it is Turkey and its armed forces.
Tourists during a visit to the island of Cyprus most often visit the southern part of the island, or the so-called Greek Cyprus, but you can freely visit Northern Cyprus (or Turkish Cyprus), especially since there are many historical attractions and excellent beaches. But there are visa features that are very important to know.
A visa is not formally required to visit Northern Cyprus, but in order to visit it legally and not have further problems with the authorities of the southern part of the island and the EU countries, it is recommended to do so in a legal way.
Therefore, we highly recommend that you remember and follow the following rules:
- If you arrive in the Republic of Cyprus, you can visit Northern Cyprus by land, then you must return to southern Cyprus again, and leave abroad only from its territory.
- The number of movements from the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UK and back is not limited, and does not depend on the type of visa you received.
- If you arrive on a direct flight to the UK, you should not visit the Republic of Kazakhstan, and in no case depart from the Republic of Kazakhstan abroad.
And now more about each of the methods:
Legal way through the Republic of Cyprus
If you do not want to have problems with the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, then you should enter and leave Northern Cyprus strictly from the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, and strictly through land border crossings. So, for this you will need to get a free Cyprus pro-visa (only for Russians and Ukrainians), a paper visa, have a valid multiple Schengen or multiple visas of Bulgaria, Croatia or Romania. Learn more about visas to Cyprus see here.
For these visas and passport, you must arrive in the Republic of Cyprus through Larnaca International Airport or Paphos, or through the seaport of Limassol, and already during the rest you can cross the border to the north by land. You can cross the border as many times as you want, there are no restrictions.
There is an opinion that it is impossible to visit Northern Cyprus on a pro-visa, and only a multiple-entry visa is needed, since this will be considered departure from the Republic of Cyprus. This is not true, and you can safely visit the North if you have a pro-visa.
At the land border crossing you only need a passport, no visas for Northern Cyprus are needed. Here, the documents are checked, and a note of the visit is put on a special insert, and nothing is put in the passport. Previously, stamps were put in the passport, and this led to problems when leaving and the inability to visit the Republic of Cyprus on a passport with such marks in the future.
Illegal way through Turkey
You can get directly to the territory of Northern Cyprus only from Turkey by flight to Ercan airport, or the seaports of Kyrenia or Famagusta. No visa is required in this case, and stamps in the passport as of 2021 are not put.
But from the point of view of the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, you arrive on the territory of the state illegally, since you enter the country without passing passport and customs control in the temporarily occupied and uncontrolled territories. If you try to cross the land border, and even more so to leave the border from the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, you may be subject to criminal prosecution. Therefore, it is necessary to decrease strictly only from the territory of the UK.
