General information, recreation, infrastructure

Kakopetria - a village on the northern slopes of the Troodos Mountain Region, 16 kilometers from the village of Troodos and 65 from Nicosia (Kakopetria on the map). It is one of the largest villages in Troodos, and is considered the most picturesque. Its permanent population is slightly more than 1200 inhabitants, while in the season the population increases significantly due to visiting tourists and locals who own real estate here and move here from the heat of the plains. It is located at an altitude of 660 meters, and the temperature here is usually 3-5 degrees lower than on the coast.

Kakopetria is not just a traditional mountain village of Cyprus, which is visited by passing, but in fact a full-fledged mountain resort, especially loved by residents of the capital of Cyprus. It is not as popular with tourists as the villages on the southern slopes (Platres, Troodos, Lanea, Lofu , etc.), but if you have the opportunity to visit it, be sure to use it. Here you can spend two or three days with pleasure, which are spent walking around the village and the surrounding area, and to see the sights. If you can not go here for a couple of days, you can visit it during a day trip by car from Limassol and other resorts, or by bus from Nicosia.

The village is very atmospheric and picturesque, it even has a historical area with several attractions, and included in the UNESCO list. In the vicinity there are trails and paths for walking in nature, however, these are not official ecological routes, but it will not be difficult to follow them with the help of the Navigator. In addition to walking, you can have fun in the rope park, eat in one of the many restaurants or traditional taverns, buy handmade souvenirs or products of local agricultural production, such as jam, honey, wine, Chacha, sweets, olives, Kiba, fruit. By the way, for local residents Kakopetria has long been a popular place for agrotourism, and they come here with whole families for the weekend. Take this into account when planning, since on daily weekends everything is clogged with tourists, there are few places in hotels.

In the village there are several shops, banks, ATMs. You can pay in most tourist places with a card, but cash is needed for small purchases in stores or in a bakery. They may refuse to accept card payments for purchases below 10 euros. There are very narrow streets and little parking space. In the center there is a paid parking for 1 euro per hour, or you can leave your car on the side of the road for free if you find a place. Some hotels provide their own parking spaces to guests, see the availability of parking in the description of hotels.

You can stay in Kakopetria in one of a couple of dozen hotels and guest houses, or in private apartments. Housing prices are higher than in beach resorts: the minimum accommodation for one will cost from 30 euros, a room for two 40 euros, and family rooms 2+2 from 50 euros. It is better to book in advance, especially if your visit is scheduled for the weekend.

Weather in Kakopetria village and tourist seasons

Considering that Kakopetria is not a beach resort, theoretically you can go here at any time of the year. But there are some subtleties.

  • Winter (December-February). In these months in Cyprus there is not much to do at all, it is too cold and there is no beach holiday, and in the mountainous regions there are even frosts, on the slopes of the Troodos mountains and mountain roads there is snow.
  • Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). This is the most convenient time to visit Kokopetria, not very many tourists, and lower prices for accommodation. True, in general, in Cyprus these months are not yet the beach season.
  • Summer (June-August). The most popular months in which the village is literally packed with tourists, especially on weekends. This is a great time to combine a beach holiday on the coast with sightseeing trips to the Troodos region and Kakopetria.

Attractions and entertainment in Kakopetria

The village of Kakopetria itself is a landmark-an example of a traditional mountain village with narrow streets and houses made of limestone, or at least lined with it. A walk through the village is at the same time the main entertainment here. But you can not only wander aimlessly, but visit several separate attractions. To quickly get around and see, a couple of hours is enough.

  • The historical part of the village or old Kakopetria (Palia Kakopetria). This is the most colorful and photogenic place for a walk, and actually here are all the sights (old Kakopetria on the map).
  • Kakopetria Embankment. Along the river stretches a narrow pedestrian street with Bridges for crossing to the other bank. Just a beautiful place to walk (embankment on the map).
  • Church of St. Nicholas under the roof (Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis Church). The ancient Byzantine church is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list thanks to frescoes of the XI-XVII centuries. Located 2.5 kilometers from the center (church on the map).
  • Watermills. Kakopetria is known not only for its picturesque views, but also for its abundance of water. On this occasion, in the VIII century, two watermills were built here on the river, which worked until the middle of the last century. One can simply be viewed, and the other is equipped with a restaurant and a hotel.
  • Stone Petra toy Antrougynou. Translated means "sailing rock", and it is believed that in honor of this stone the village was named. Located at the entrance to the historical part (stone on the map).
  • Marina's Rope Park. Rope amusement park for kids and adults. The cost of the trails is from 7.5 euros for children, and from 15 euros for adults. Located along the road almost at the exit from the village (rope park on the map).
  • Churches in Kakopetria. During the walk you can see a dozen old Orthodox churches: Agios Panteleimon (Church of St. Panteleimon), Metamorfosi tou Sotira Church, Panagia tis Podyth, Panagia Theotokou, Panagia Forviotissa, etc.

How to get to the village of Kakopetria

Kakopetria is most convenient to visit from Limassol or Nicosia by rented transport. On the road in one direction without stopping will take an hour and a half. The roads are good everywhere. Only you need to take into account that in winter (from January to February) there is snow on the mountain roads of Troodos, and if you go from Limassol, you should not go without spikes.

Car rental in Cyprus is very affordable, international Driving License are not required, and you can get a car right at the airport. Details all about renting transport in Cyprus here.

If the rental of Transport does not suit you, you can buy excursions. Travel to Troodos with a visit to the village at local travel agencies, or book it online at Heritage sites:

The only reasonable way to get to Kakopetria by bus is from Nicosia. Given this, visiting the village for one day from other resorts in Cyprus by bus will not work. If you still decide, you can get there by bus number 405, 406 and 408. These routes run very often by local standards: approximately every hour from 5 am to 7 pm. The fare is 1.5 euros, children under 6 years old are free. For information about routes and schedules, see here.
