The road to Olympus

Mount Olympus (Olympus, also Olympos, Olymbos or Olympus) - the highest point of Cyprus, its height is 1952 meters. It is located almost in the heart of the Republic of Cyprus in the mountainous region of Troodos (Troodos).

In winter its slopes are used as a ski resort, for which there are several ski slopes and lifts. The most convenient base for skiing is the mountain town of Troodos, which is located just 4 kilometers from the top, but given the small scale of the island, you can come here to ski during the day and from the coast.

But in summer the mountain remains attractive for tourists. Since March, lovers of hiking begin to master local ecological trails in the form of light one-day hiking tours, which again are best to start from the town of Troodos. Longer hiking trails start from the village of Pano Platres. For example, some lovers of hiking go upstairs by car (by taxi or hitchhiking), and go down to the village on asphalt and trails 15-20 kilometers depending on the route.

For those who like "lazy" rest, the top of Olympus will also be interesting, since you can climb to the very top by car. There are good views from there, but honestly it is worth saying that you will not feel the "wow" effect. Unfortunately, most of the view is hidden behind the neighboring mountains and trees, and there is no high observation deck.

Part of the top is occupied by a military base, which rests on the highway. You can easily get to it, leave the car there, and walk around on foot, however, it is forbidden to photograph a military facility. Be sure to take warm clothes, because it is cooler here by about 10 degrees than below.

On your way to Olympus, be sure to make a few stops near other attractions and viewing platforms, which is more detailed here - car route to Troodos and Mount Olympus in Cyprus.

🚶 How to get there

A good asphalt road leads to the very top from Limassol (50 kilometers), Nicosia (80 kilometers), from the north coast (70 kilometers), and from Paphos (80 kilometers). The road at the very top abuts a military base (Olympus on the map. You can get there in the summer by any rented car, but in the winter months (from December to February) there is snow on the roads, there is ice, without spikes or even chains on the wheels you can not get there.

They also offer ready-made excursions from resorts of Cyprus, you can pick them up and book them online:
