General information about Larnaca

Larnaca (pronounced La ́rnaka) - one of the largest cities in Cyprus and a beach resort. By the standards of Russia, this is a very small city, its population is a little more than 50 thousand people, but it is the fourth largest and one of the most important cities in Cyprus. The main international airport of the country is located here, there is a resort area with beaches and hotels, urban and intercity transport is well developed.

This is one of the oldest cities in Cyprus, the first settlements here date back four thousand years BC.

Holidays in Larnaca

Larnaca is one of the most popular beach resorts in Cyprus, especially among Russian tourists. It is very convenient because there is an international airport, and in half an hour or an hour after arrival you can check into the hotel and be on the beach under the warm sun.

However, Larnaca is not the best beach resort in Cyprus, and the blame for the beaches, which, unfortunately, are not very beautiful. The fact is that the sand here is an ugly gray-black color, even with a hint of green. But if you have no prejudices on this score, then you can safely go here on vacation.

There are several beaches in Larnaca, there is an excellent Finikoudes beach with a promenade in the heart of the tourist center of the resort. In addition, on the outskirts of the city and near the airport there are two well-equipped sandy beaches of Mackenzie and Castella, and in the Gulf of Larnaca on the coast stretching for almost 25 kilometers there are still a lot of funny Sandy-Pebble and pure sandy beaches, so there is something to choose from. Infrastructure in Larnaca

It is one of the most developed cities and resorts in Cyprus along with Limassol and Ayia Napa. In the tourist area near the promenade and the beach of Finikoudes (Finikoudes) and on the adjacent streets there are most of the travel agencies, dive centers, bicycle and car rental, shops with goods for tourists. Tourist purchases in Larnaca are usually made in numerous shops and shops near the beach and the promenade, but if you go a little further into the city, then in the narrow alleys you can find many shops with souvenirs and handicrafts with prices much lower. In Larnaca, in addition to traditional souvenirs, it is worth looking at ceramics, since it was this craft that the city was famous for several hundred years. Consumer goods and food can be bought in numerous small shops, but cheaper in supermarkets. The largest metro, Auchan and other large shopping centers are located in the non-tourist part far from the beaches, but there are good supermarkets in the tourist area. We Recommend Smart Supermarket, Lidl, Super Discount Store, Fresh Super Discount Store, Petros Supermarket. There are shops with products from Russia, one of them is located next to the Smart supermarket. If possible, we recommend visiting Minicular Makret (open on Saturdays in the morning), where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables at very good prices.

Currency exchange in Larnaca is best done at the exchange offices in the city, not at the airport. The rate at the airport is very low, so you can exchange there only a small amount in order to get to the place of rest, and then look for more profitable places. In general, it is better to come to Cyprus with already exchanged euros or at least dollars. The exchange rate for rubles will not be profitable in any case, even if you find an exchanger where they are accepted. If you have dollars in your hands, then you should not change them to euros at home, it is better to change them here.

Larnaca weather and tourist seasons

• Beach holiday season or high season in Larnaca starts at the end of May, lasts until the end of October. It is at this time that it is best to go on vacation to Larnaca, as this is the best time for a beach holiday. Especially warm months and peak season takes place in July and August.

Attractions and entertainment in Larnaca

Attractions in Larnaca are not very much, and in general we can say that this is not the best place for lovers of Antiquities, museums and natural beauty. But given the small scale of the country, during a holiday in Larnaca it will not be a problem to visit other more interesting places in the vicinity of the city and in other parts of Cyprus, which can be done in the form of a one-day or multi-day independent trip by bus, rented transport, or with excursions. Without problems in one day you can go to explore the sights in Limassol, Nicosia, Ayia Napa, and even visit Northern Cyprus through Nicosia or Famagusta. Theoretically, you can even go to Paphos, only for this you need to leave as early as possible in the morning, and even better, plan a stop there for one or two days.

As for interesting places directly in Larnaca itself, here you can visit the Larnaca fortress museum, a modest Archaeological Park, two archaeological museums to choose from, the City Gallery, The Museum of Medicine. And the obligatory place that every guest of Larnaca should visit is St. Lazarus Cathedral. All these places can be visited independently, and on foot.

You can also visit places on the outskirts of the city on foot or by city buses: Larnaca Salt Lake, Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, Kamares Aqueduct and Pattichion Park. How to get to Larnaca

Larnaca is home to the country's main international airport, Larnaca International Airport – Glafcos Clerides (IATA code when searching for tickets - LCA). Most of the direct flights and flights with transfers from Russia and other CIS countries are operated to it. You can also use the second International Airport of Paphos to arrive in the country, but there are few flights to it, besides it is very far from Larnaca.

Larnaca Airport located on the outskirts of the City 4 kilometers from the waterfront (Larnaca airport on the map). Go only 10-15 minutes, traffic jams are rare. You can get there by taxi for 5-10 euros (from419 rubles, see money in Cyprus and exchange rate), on city buses for 1.5 euros (126 USD). But it is most convenient to rent a car at the airport. Larnaca is connected by direct regular bus service with resorts and major cities of the Republic of Cyprus, some towns and villages will have to go with transfers. There is no direct connection with Northern Cyprus, you will have to make transfers in Nicosia or Famagusta.

Transport, how to get around

Larnaca has a city bus system. There are not very many routes, and they do not go often. The fare is 1.5 euros, paid to the conductor. You can get all the necessary information about routes here. You can also use the official Larnaca Transport website http://www.zinonasbuses.com, or install the Cyprus By Bus app. In fact, only one route is of interest to tourists - No. 425. Also in Larnaca, rental of bicycles, electric scooters, electric bicycles is common. You can rent them in some hotels and rental offices in different places in the city, it will not be difficult to find them on numerous signs. True, the cost of renting a bicycle is comparable to a car-10 euros per day (837 USD). You can find a little cheaper on ads from private traders.

As for renting a car, as we mentioned above, it is best to do this at the airport, since there are the lowest prices throughout the country. There are rental offices in the city center, but in any case it is more profitable to make a reservation via the internet.
