What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Hirokitia Archaeological Park, Cyprus
Hirokitiya Archaeological Park

Archaeological park of Choirokoitia it differs from many other archaeological parks of Cyprus in that it is located on the site of a Neolithic settlement, and it is the oldest place on the whole island. Presumably the settlement appeared for 7000 years BC, i.e. today it is about 9000 years old! Archaeological excavations are still being carried out here, and it is expected that this place will bring many more amazing discoveries.

The Archaeological Park is open to tourists as an open-air museum. Before the start of the inspection, you can visit a small exhibition-reconstruction of the dwelling of that time, after which you can go to inspect the park. At the entrance they give a booklet with information, including in Russian, and throughout the park there are signs with descriptions in English. Almost all the buildings that you will see here are a reconstruction, not the original.

The park consists of three levels and is located on the mountainside:

  • 1st level-restored houses of settlement residents;
  • 2nd level - more houses and ruins;
  • 3rd level-the upper platform with ruins and ongoing excavations, offering a magnificent view.

The park is small, but during a walk under the scorching sun it is worth taking a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water.

If we compare this archaeological park with the park in Paphos or Limassol, then, of course, it is much inferior to them in scale and entertainment, it will take 20-30 minutes to visit. Suitable for lovers of history and archaeology, and if you do not belong to those, you can skip it.
