What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Kamares aqueduct in Larnaca, Cyprus
Kamares Aqueduct Larnaca

Kamares Aqueduct (also Bekir Pasha) – this is a grandiose structure for the time of its construction, and today one of the few architectural and historical attractions in Larnaca. The aqueduct can be viewed from the side, or climb it from the west side and walk along the gutter, designed to supply water. There are no guided tours or information and they are visited freely, not as an archaeological park.

Its construction began during the Ottoman period in 1747, and was completed in just three years. It was intended to supply water from mountainous areas to Larnaca, for which it had to be built with a length of 16 kilometers. It was used for its intended purpose until 1939, until it was no longer necessary. Most of it was dismantled, leaving only a small area of about 200 meters, which became today's historical landmark.
