How to Get from Phu Quoc to Da Nang: By Plane, Bus, Train, and Ferry

Article and section navigation

My Khe Beach in Da Nang

The journey from Phu Quoc Island to Da Nang takes you from the south to central Vietnam. It's a fair distance: about 850 kilometers as the crow flies. Really, you've got two main options: either fly – quick and comfortable – or embark on a marathon land journey involving ferries, buses, and possibly trains. In this guide, we'll break down all the ways, from direct flights to the budget-friendliest (but most exhausting) options. Spoiler alert: flying is our go-to, but if you're up for an adventure, let's dive in.

The short version: The easiest way is to grab a direct flight with VietJet or Bamboo Airways – 1 hour 45 minutes, and you're in Da Nang. If direct tickets are pricey, check out options with a layover in Ho Chi Minh City – they can sometimes be cheaper. The land route (ferry + bus/train) will take two days and is really only for the hardcore or for those who want to explore Saigon along the way.

✈ By Plane – Fast, Comfortable, the Best Bet

Plane at Phu Quoc Airport

Phu Quoc Airport (PQC) is modern and convenient. Direct flights to Da Nang (DAD) leave daily, mainly operated by low-cost carrier VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways. The flight takes about 1 hour 45 minutes.

  • ⏲ Travel time: 1 hour 45 minutes direct, from 4 hours with a layover.
  • 💲 Flight cost: from 1,200,000 VND one-way / from 45.59 USD (without baggage).
  • 🖈 Where to buy tickets: Russian cards don't work on Vietnamese airline sites, so use trusted aggregators: Aviasales or Trip.com.

🔄 Option with a Layover in Ho Chi Minh City

If direct flights are pricey or have bad timings, check out tickets with a layover in Ho Chi Minh City (SGN). Sometimes the PQC–SGN and SGN–DAD combo works out cheaper than a direct flight. But there's a catch: domestic flights in Ho Chi Minh City can depart from either the old Terminal 1 or the new Terminal 3. Make sure you check your terminals on your tickets! A free shuttle runs between terminals, but you should budget at least 1.5–2 hours for the transfer, especially if you've booked separate tickets (not as one booking).

We've detailed all the connection quirks in our Ho Chi Minh City Airport Guide.

To save money, you could buy a round-trip ticket without checked baggage, pack light for Da Nang, and leave your main luggage at your hotel in Phu Quoc for safekeeping. Hotels usually do this for free, but it's nice to tip the staff.

🚌⛵ The Land Route: Ferry + Bus/Train (For Those Not in a Hurry)

Ferry to Phu Quoc

If you're looking to save money or just love long-haul journeys with multiple connections, you can tackle the trip from Phu Quoc by land. But be prepared: it'll take at least a full day, probably more. And there's no direct connection – you'll have to transfer in Ho Chi Minh City.

Here's the plan: first, take a ferry from Phu Quoc to the mainland (ports of Rach Gia or Ha Tien), then a bus to Ho Chi Minh City, and from there – a train or bus to Da Nang. Sounds like a quest? Well, it kind of is.

Stage 1: Ferry Phu Quoc – Mainland

Ferries leave the island from two main ports:

  • Bai Vong Port – high-speed Phu Quoc Express ferries to Rach Gia depart from here. Travel time 2.5 hours, price from 315,000 VND / 11.97 USD. Departures are in the morning.
  • Ben Pha Port – ferries to Ha Tien leave from here. Travel time 1.5 hours, price from 216,000 VND / 8.21 USD.

It's best to check schedules on 12go.asia or the operator's site phuquocexpressboat.com. We recommend buying tickets in advance, especially during peak season.

Stage 2: Bus to Ho Chi Minh City

Regular buses run from Rach Gia and Ha Tien to Ho Chi Minh City. The journey takes 6–9 hours depending on the starting point. Prices:

  • Rach Gia – Ho Chi Minh City: from 230,000 VND / 8.74 USD.
  • Ha Tien – Ho Chi Minh City: from 250,000 VND / 9.5 USD.

There are plenty of buses, including night buses. The most reliable operator is Futa Bus Lines (futabus.vn). You can buy tickets online or at the pier ticket offices. Keep in mind that ferries arrive in the morning, and buses to HCMC leave throughout the day, but there might be a gap in the schedule. Worst case, you might need to spend the night in Rach Gia or Ha Tien – they're small towns, but they have guesthouses.

🚩 Important: The Layover in Ho Chi Minh City

Even if you make it to Ho Chi Minh City on the same day, you'll still need to connect to a train or bus to Da Nang. The main problem is timing. Trains and buses to Da Nang usually leave either early in the morning or in the evening. Syncing them up with a bus arrival from Rach Gia/Ha Tien on the same day is almost impossible. You'll almost certainly need to spend a night in Ho Chi Minh City. Don't worry, it's a great excuse to grab a bowl of pho and explore Saigon in the evening. Just don't plan a super tight connection!

We've covered how to get from the bus station to the train station, where to stay, and what to do in our Ho Chi Minh City guide.

Stage 3: Ho Chi Minh City – Da Nang (Train or Bus)

From Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang, you can take a train or a bus.

  • 🚆 Train: Departs from Saigon Railway Station (Ga Sài Gòn). The journey takes about 17–19 hours. The best option is a Soft Sleeper cabin (4-berth) for 1.3–1.8 million VND / 49.3968.38 USD. It's comfortable, and you can get some sleep. Tickets are sold on 12go.asia or at the station.

  • 🚌 Bus: Cheaper than the train (from 400,000 VND / 15.2 USD), but less comfortable. The trip takes about 20 hours. Overnight sleeper buses are run by Futa Bus and other companies. We've taken them – they're okay, but the berths are a bit short for tall people. You do save a night's accommodation, though.

So, Which Way Should You Choose from Phu Quoc to Da Nang?

  • ✈ Choose the flight (direct or with a layover) if your goal is to get to Da Nang quickly and without stress, ready to relax or continue your trip. Paying a little extra is worth saving a whole day and your sanity.
  • ⛵ The land route is for those with tons of time who want to see the country from the ground up. Or if you need to be in Ho Chi Minh City for some reason. As a way to simply get from point A to point B, it's unnecessarily complicated and long.

We always choose the flight. Vietnam has affordable domestic flights, and it seems a shame to spend a whole day traveling when you could be on the beach or exploring. But hey, the choice is yours.
