Utapao International Airport (U-Tapao, IATA code: UTP) is known as the closest airport to Pattaya. It's located 40 kilometers from the resort (U-Tapao on the map). The airport serves both military and civilian purposes. It mainly handles domestic and charter flights.

Most flights from Russia and CIS countries arrive at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport, but Utapao is a decent option if you're planning to travel around Thailand or arriving on a charter.
-
Flights within Thailand: daily flights operate from here to Phuket, Samui, Chiang Mai, and Hat Yai. This is a convenient alternative to flying from Bangkok's crowded airports. Tickets for domestic routes from Utapao are often even cheaper, and the airport itself is small, so going through all the procedures is much faster here. For example, a direct flight to Samui takes just 1 hour and 5 minutes, and you can find tickets from 2,160 baht.
-
International connections: Air service from Utapao is actively developing. The most stable routes are to Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia). For example, on the current date (May 12, 2026), there are regular flights. Flights to Singapore and Macau are seasonal or connecting — there are no direct regular flights on these dates. As for China (Nanning, Nanchang), the situation is similar: there are no direct flights right now, but airlines have announced plans to resume them.
Direct charter flights from Russia operate seasonally as part of tour packages with S7, Azur Air, Red Wings, and Nordwind. But you'll hardly find them on public sale — only as part of tour packages.
Before planning your trip, we strongly recommend checking the current schedule on the official airport website or with the airlines themselves.
Where is Utapao Airport located
Utapao Airport (U-Tapao) is located in Rayong province, about 40 km south of Pattaya and 140 km southeast of Bangkok. The nearest large town is Sattahip (view on the map). Because of its proximity to Pattaya, the airport is often called "Pattaya Airport," although administratively it belongs to another province.
Utapao Airport online board
You can check the current online arrivals and departures board on the official airport website utapao.com in the "Flight Status" section. Real-time flight info is also convenient to track via FlightRadar24 or other similar services using the airport code UTP.
Airport infrastructure & layout
The terminal is small, consisting of a single building. Despite its international status, everything is quite compact and straightforward. The building has:
- Arrivals and departures area (shared);
- Passport and customs control;
- Duty Free shops and souvenir stalls;
- Currency exchange booths and ATMs;
- VAT Refund counter (more about VAT refund);
- Cafes and snack bars;
- Free WiFi (requires authorization);
- Transfer desks, car rental counters.
A 25-minute walk from the airport, past Sukhumvit Road, there are several budget hotels — an option for those arriving late and not wanting to go straight to Pattaya.
How to get to and from Utapao Airport
Under normal operations, the airport handles few passengers, so public transport is poorly developed. Getting from the airport to Pattaya is easier than the reverse, because minivans adjust to arrival times. The distance is only 40 km, but traffic on Sukhumvit Road can make the trip take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. For domestic flights, arrive 2 hours before departure; for international flights, arrive 3 hours before departure.
-
By taxi or transfer
The most convenient and predictable way. Prices:
- Via the Grab app — from 600 baht (18.21 USD) to Pattaya, more expensive at night;
- At the taxi counter in the terminal — about 1000 baht (30.36 USD);
- Booking through a hotel or on the spot — about 800 baht (24.28 USD);
- A pre-booked transfer (e.g., KiwiTaxi) — from 1200 baht (36.43 USD) with a meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall.
From Pattaya to the airport, you can book a taxi at the hotel reception, via Grab, or hail one on the street — the price will be roughly the same.
-
By minivan
Minivans run from the airport to Pattaya and Rayong for 250 baht (7.59 USD) per person. There's no fixed schedule — they depart as they fill up, usually shortly after each flight arrival. Tickets are sold at counters in the arrivals area. If you miss the first one, you'll have to wait for the next or take a taxi.
U-Tapao Airport Limousine also operates, offering minivans for 500 baht (15.18 USD) once they have a group of 4-6 people. It's a bit more expensive, but sometimes more convenient if the regular minivans are overcrowded.
-
AirAsia transfer
AirAsia low-cost carrier passengers can use the company's dedicated transfer to central Pattaya (Central Festival shopping mall on Second Road). When buying a ticket on the AirAsia website, select not "U-Tapao Airport" as your destination, but "Pattaya — Downtown (CentralFestival Pattaya Beach)". The transfer costs 210 baht (6.37 USD) and is automatically included in the ticket price. This is a very convenient and inexpensive way.
-
Car rental
There are several rental company counters in the arrivals terminal (Hertz, Budget, Thai Rent a Car). You can rent a car on the spot or book in advance online. Prices start at 600 baht (18.21 USD) per day with multi-day rentals.
Important: Thailand has ratified the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, so you can drive with a new-style Russian driver's license (with Latin characters). However, in practice, police officers are not always familiar with this new rule, so we still recommend carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) to avoid disputes. Read more about renting a car in Thailand.
-
By train
The cheapest but most complicated way is to take a train to Ban Plu Ta Luang station (6 km from the airport) and then take a taxi from there. A ticket costs just 6 baht (0.18 USD). The train from Pattaya leaves at 10:35, arrives at Ban Plu Ta Luang at 11:20. The return train from Ban Plu Ta Luang leaves at 13:35, arrives in Pattaya at 14:20. A taxi from the station to the airport costs about 100-150 baht.
This option is only suitable for those with an afternoon flight and time to spare for transfers. For most tourists, it's too much of a hassle.
-
By passing bus or songthaew
For the thriftiest and most unhurried — walk 2.5 km to Sukhumvit Road and catch a passing bus or songthaew to Pattaya or Rayong. Cost — about 60 baht (1.82 USD). From Pattaya, you can return the same way: take a songthaew to Sukhumvit Road and transfer there to a bus heading towards the airport. Due to the inconvenience, this option is rarely chosen.
