The village of Shiryaevo

Article and Section Navigation

The village of Shiryaevo in the Samara region is not an attraction in itself, but there are several remarkable natural and man-made places that tourists are happy to visit. This is one of the few destinations in the Samara region where local travel agencies even organize sightseeing tours. Also, many tourists visit the village on their own in the form of a one- or multi-day trip with an overnight stay in a tent or in the homes of local residents.

In Shiryaevo you can see the tunnels of Shiryaevo and Mount Popova, Mount Camel and its tunnels, go on a tourist route to the Stone Bowl and to St. Nicholas spring. There is also a whole museum complex, including the house-museum of the artist Repin, the house-museum of the poet A.V. Shiryaevets, the museum-estate of the merchant I. The widow. Several more interesting places can be visited on the way to Shiryaevo, if you get here by your own car, including the main tourist route of Samara Luka - Strelnaya Mountain.

Sights in Shiryaevo, what to see

  • Shiryaevsky tunnels

    Tunnels in Shiryaevo, Samara region
    Tunnels in Shiryaevo

Shiryaevsky tunnels appeared in the late XIX - early XX century during the extraction of stone, as the local mountains were famous for high-quality limestone. Mining was carried out very actively in the Soviet years, including prisoners and prisoners of war who worked here. A few years ago, most of the tunnels were closed from visiting, access was blocked by bars to preserve the population of bats living in them. Group excursions are conducted there only accompanied by employees of the Samara Luka National Park on preliminary requests. But part of the tunnels remained open to the public for a fee. These tunnels are shallow, it is impossible to get lost in them, and it will take 10 minutes to inspect. There is not much to see inside, there are only stones and modern "vandal" graffiti on the walls. It's cold inside even in summer, you need to dress warmer. And be sure to bring flashlights with you, otherwise you won't see anything. Read more .

The ascent to the observation deck is very simple, takes no more than 10 minutes along a gentle path. Stone bowl and Nikolsky spring in Samara

A stone bowl is called a tract near the village of Shiryaevo, in which the holy spring of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is located. It is part of the Zhiguli Nature Reserve and the Samarskaya Luka National Park. This is one of the most popular tourist places of the Samara region, which is visited all year round. Especially a lot of people come here during religious holidays, because it is popular not only with tourists, but also with believers, pilgrims.

The spring got its name because of the rounded cup-shaped expansion of the Shiryaevsky ravine, forming a kind of stone bowl in which the source is located. The very existence of a spring here is surprising, since the local rocks consist exclusively of limestone, which absorbs precipitation and does not allow springs to form. The water of the spring is considered curative and consecrated, and there is a chapel and a bathhouse of St. Nicholas nearby. Read more .

      I.E. Repin House Museum

The Museum of the great Russian artist Ilya Repin is not by chance located in Shiryaevo. In this house in the summer of 1870 lived Repin, his brother Vasily and friends-artists Makarov and Vasiliev. The furnishings of an old wooden house and courtyard, exhibits, convey the life of that time, tell about the artist's work and life. It was during his stay in Shiryaevo that Repin prepared sketches of the famous painting "Boatmen on the Volga", and wrote "Storm on the Volga". Unfortunately, there are no originals of the paintings, only copies, and the originals are kept in metropolitan museums.

      Vdovin Estate Museum

The estate of the local merchant Vdovin is notable for the fact that it was built in 1910 of brick, which was very rare for that time. The merchant himself and his entire family disappeared in the 30s during the repressions, and none of his personal belongings have been preserved in the museum. Therefore, in the house, as best they could, they recreated the atmosphere and interior of that time using the exhibits of the Samara Art Museum, whose branch is the museum complex in Shiryaevo.
