Da Nang and Phu Quoc are two of our favorite spots in Vietnam, but they're a fair distance apart: about 850 km as the crow flies, and a good 1200–1300 km by land. If you've been soaking up the sun on My Khe Beach or exploring the Marble Mountains and now fancy heading to the island known for pepper rum and starfish, you've got some logistics to figure out.
You could hop on a plane and be splashing in the sea in a couple of hours, or you could embark on a multi-stage adventure involving trains, buses, and ferries. In this guide, we've broken down all your options, from quick and comfortable to dirt-cheap and adventurous. Pick whichever suits your travel style best.
The short version: the best and most sensible way to get from Da Nang to Phu Quoc is by plane. Direct flights with VietJet and Bamboo Airways take about 1 hour 45 minutes. If you book ahead and skip checked baggage, the price is pretty reasonable. Even if a direct flight doesn't work for you price-wise or schedule-wise, you can fly with a connection through Ho Chi Minh City.
The land route (train/bus + ferry) will take at least a couple of days and won't actually save you that much money. We'd only recommend it if you're itching for a real Vietnamese transport experience or if you want to stop over in Ho Chi Minh City anyway.
✈ By Plane – Fast and Fuss-Free
Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is right in the city – a definite plus. Direct flights to Phu Quoc (PQC) leave daily, mostly operated by low-cost carrier VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways. The flight takes just under two hours.
- ⏲ Travel time: 1 hour 45 minutes direct, from 4 hours with a connection.
- 💲 Flight cost: from 1,200,000 VND one-way / from 45.63 USD (without baggage).
- 🖈 Where to buy tickets: Russian cards don't work on Vietnamese airline sites, so use trusted aggregators like Aviasales or Trip.com – they accept Russian cards.
We've covered both airports in detail, including how to get to/from them:
If you're flying with a connection in Ho Chi Minh City (which can sometimes be cheaper than a direct flight), make sure to leave at least 3–4 hours for the layover, especially if you've booked separate tickets – you never know if the first flight will be delayed. Also, pay attention to the arrival and departure terminals in Ho Chi Minh City, as there are now two domestic terminals quite far apart. You can read more about the terminals and transfer specifics in our Ho Chi Minh City Airport Guide.
To save money, you could buy a round-trip ticket without checked baggage, pack light for Phu Quoc, and leave your main luggage at your hotel in Da Nang for safekeeping. Hotels usually do this for free, but it's nice to tip the staff.

How to Get from Phu Quoc Airport to Your Hotel
You've landed, grabbed your bags – now you need to get to your hotel. You've got a few options, from nearly free to an air-conditioned taxi.
-
🚌 Taxi (Grab): The easiest way. Download the Grab app beforehand and register (you can use a Russian number – if you don't get the SMS, try selecting Kazakhstan as your country code but still use your Russian number). The app shows the fare upfront, just like Uber or Yandex Go. A ride to popular Long Beach costs from 100,000–150,000 VND (3.8-57.03 USD). Don't fall for the touts at the exit – they'll ask for double.
-
🚌 VinBus Public Bus: Yes, they have buses! Routes No. 17 and No. 19 run from the airport along the main Long Beach strip to Duong Dong town center and further on to GrandWorld. You can check the schedule on the Vinbus app. The buses are new, air-conditioned, and usually pretty empty. A great option if your hotel is right on the route. You pay in cash on the bus – just tell the driver your destination (the area you're heading to). The price ranges from 20,000 to 50,000 VND (0.76-1.9 USD) depending on the distance.
-
🛵 Rent a Motorbike: You can rent a motorbike right at the airport (from 120,000 VND/day). Touts offering rentals will meet you in the arrivals hall, or you can walk out of the terminal, go straight across the parking lot to the roundabout (a bit less than a kilometer), and you'll find rentals there too.

🚌 The Land Route: Bus/Train + Ferry (For Those with Time to Spare)
If you're a fan of slow travel and want to see the country from a bus or train window, you can tackle the journey to Phu Quoc by land. But be warned: it'll take at least a full day, maybe two. There's no direct route; you'll have to transfer in Ho Chi Minh City, possibly with an overnight stay.
Here's the plan: first, get yourself to Ho Chi Minh City (by train or bus), and from there – either fly again (but then you might as well have flown from Da Nang directly) or do the bus + ferry combo to the island. The most realistic overland option is: Da Nang – Ho Chi Minh City (train or bus) + Ho Chi Minh City – Rach Gia (bus) + Rach Gia – Phu Quoc (ferry). Sounds exhausting, right? It kind of is.
-
🚆 Train: Da Nang – Ho Chi Minh City
Trains run from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City (heading south). The journey takes about 17–19 hours. The best option is a Soft Sleeper cabin (4-berth) for 1.3–1.8 million VND (49.43–68.44 USD). You can save money with a Hard Sleeper (6-berth) – it's a bit cramped, but doable. We have more details about trains and how to use them in our Guide to Vietnamese Trains.
-
🚌 Bus: Da Nang – Ho Chi Minh City
Buses are cheaper than the train (from 400,000 VND / 15.21 USD), but the trip is longer – about 20 hours. Overnight sleeper buses are run by several companies, like Futa Bus. We've taken them a couple of times – they're ok if you're not taller than 180 cm, as the berths are a bit short. But hey, you save a night's hotel cost. For more on buses, check out our Guide to Vietnamese Buses.
-
Then from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc
From Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc, the easiest way is to fly (see our guide). But if you're set on going by land, you have two choices: via Rach Gia port or via Ha Tien.
- Via Rach Gia: Bus Ho Chi Minh City – Rach Gia (6–7 hours, from 230,000 VND / 8.74 USD), then ferry Rach Gia – Phu Quoc (Bai Vong port) — 2.5 hours, from 315,000 VND (11.98 USD). Ferries run in the morning, so you'll either need to overnight in Rach Gia or leave Ho Chi Minh City very early.
- Via Ha Tien: Bus Ho Chi Minh City – Ha Tien (8–9 hours, from 250,000 VND / 9.51 USD), ferry Ha Tien – Phu Quoc (Ben Pha port) — 1.5 hours, from 216,000 VND (8.21 USD).
It's best to check ferry schedules on 12go.asia or phuquocexpressboat.com.
Once you arrive at Bai Vong or Ben Pha port, you'll still need to get to your hotel. Taxis are available (from 150,000 VND / 5.7 USD to Duong Dong), as are local VinBus buses (No. 20), or you can rent a motorbike right at the pier.
Comparison Table: Flight vs. Land Route
| Criterion | Flight (Direct or via HCMC) | Train/Bus + Ferry |
|---|---|---|
| Time | ~2 hours including flight and transfers | From 24 hours (best case) to 30+ |
| Cost (approx.) | From 1,200,000 VND | From ~1,000,000 VND (bus+ferry) + train/bus to HCMC + possibly a hotel in HCMC |
| Comfort | High | Medium/Low, lots of transfers and waiting |
| Experience | Standard flight | See rural Vietnam, the Mekong Delta |
| Who it's for | Almost everyone, especially families and those who value their time | Backpackers, adventurers, travelers with lots of time |
So, Which Way Should You Choose?
- ✅ Choose the flight if your goal is to get to the beach, cocktail in hand, as fast as possible. It's the most sensible option for price/time/effort. Even if the tickets seem a bit pricey, think about how much time and hassle you'll save.
- ❗ The land route only makes sense if you deliberately want to travel the length of Vietnam or if you're planning to spend a couple of days in Ho Chi Minh City anyway. As a simple way to get from point A to point B, it loses to flying in every way.
Either way, Phu Quoc is worth the effort. Grab your tickets, book your hotel, and come on over for some new adventures. If you have any questions, drop a comment – we're always here to help!
