Overview of ways to get to Nha Trang

Nha Trang is located 400 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City and 1300 from Hanoi, and geographically it is difficult to clearly assign it to southern Vietnam or central Vietnam, it is located roughly halfway between these regions (Nha Trang on the interactive map of Vietnam).

Near Nha Trang there is an international airport, trains run here, many bus routes operate from all corners of Vietnam and neighboring countries. So there are no difficulties with getting here, everything is simple and easy. We will tell you in detail about all the methods in our detailed guide below, and for starters, here are brief instructions for directions:

  • From cities of Russia, CIS and other countries. It is best to fly directly to Nha Trang airport, but if you cannot find tickets or the price does not suit you, you can fly to Ho Chi Minh City and from there take a bus or train.
  • From Nha Trang airport. From the airport by taxi about 400,000 dong or bus for 65,000 dong.
  • From Ho Chi Minh City airport. It is best to fly. If you didn't manage to buy a cheap ticket in advance, then from Ho Chi Minh City airport only by taxi directly, but it is very expensive. It is much cheaper to get to the city center by taxi or city buses, and there transfer to a bus to Nha Trang, possibly overnight. Bus tickets can be purchased right on the spot.
  • From central Ho Chi Minh City. Many buses depart from several bus stations and from the tourist district of Pham Ngu Lao street in the center. They depart frequently during the day and night, tickets can be purchased before departure. We recommend taking Futa Bus Lines, they will take you to your hotel in Nha Trang (upon request).
  • From Da Lat. From the bus station in Da Lat, the sleeper bus Futa Bus Lines runs many times a day, taking you to your hotel in Nha Trang (upon request). Also many different private and tourist minivans, tickets for them are sold at hotels and travel agencies.
  • From Mui Ne/Phan Thiet. From the resort area of Mui Ne to Nha Trang, only sleeper buses Hanh Cafe and Techbus run, travel time 5-6 hours. More buses run to Nha Trang from the main bus station in Phan Thiet, including FUTA Bus Lines from there.
  • From Hanoi. Best by plane, but also by train or buses, but it is very long.
  • From Phu Quoc. By plane with a transfer via Ho Chi Minh City airport.
  • From Vung Tau. We did not find direct flights, you will have to go with a transfer in Phan Thiet (shorter) or Ho Chi Minh City (detour, but more flights). You can also plan a route through Da Lat with a stop there for a few days.
  • From Sa Pa. There are no direct bus or train services. You need to travel with a transfer via Hanoi, and you may have to overnight if you cannot connect the transfers. And enduring such a long journey is not easy.

And now in detail about each method:

Near Nha Trang, 30 kilometers from the city center, is the Cam Ranh International Airport (airport on the map). This is the only operating airport here, while the old airport in the city, Nha Trang Air Base, is no longer used and is gradually being built up with civilian facilities.

Aeroflot launched direct flights (without transfers and refueling) from Moscow to Nha Trang. Prices are very high, but for those who do not want or do not know how to fly with transfers - this is a good option. But perhaps prices with such flights in tours will be more affordable.

You can fly here with transfers through China, Thailand, UAE, Qatar, etc. There are ready-made flights with one or two transfers each way, and if possible, it is best to buy such ready-made flights. The fact is that a ready-made flight from one airline or partner airlines on a single ticket "insures" you against possible flight delays. That is, if on a single ticket you miss the next flight due to a delay of the previous one, the airline will deliver you free of charge on the next flight. If you buy each ticket separately, then all connections and possible delays will be solely your responsibility.

Find flights to Nha Trang, including with transfers, can be done via the search form from Aviasales or on Trip.com:

How to get from Cam Ranh Airport to Nha Trang

The most convenient way is to take a taxi. You can use a taxi with a fixed price, take a taxi by meter, or order a car via the Grab taxi app or Maxim. The last option is the cheapest, the trip will cost about 400,000 dong (15.2 USD, )see Vietnamese currency, exchange rate). The journey takes just under an hour.

You can order a motorbike taxi via these apps for cheaper, it will cost from 170,000 dong. But a motorbike taxi is only suitable for one passenger and without suitcases, but if you are traveling with a backpack - it's a great way to save money. There is only one nuance: motorbike taxis are not allowed onto the airport parking lot, you will have to walk about 500 meters from the territory.

If you want to travel comfortably, you can order a tourist transfer when booking with the hotel, or do it online. In this case, you will be met at the airport with a sign and delivered to the hotel door without language difficulties. You can place an order on websites with Russian-language support Kiwitaxi or Intui.travel, in local travel agencies and specialized sites, for example here: yourlocalbooking.com (English only), or via the search form:

The cheapest way to get to Nha Trang is to use the airport minibus, which will take you to a small local bus station Dat Moi Bus Station (bus station on the map). Ticket cost 65,000 dong (2.47 USD), you can buy it at the counter inside the airport before the exit. They run from 5:30 to 23:00 every 30 minutes, journey time 45 minutes. From Nha Trang back to the airport they run from 4:30 to 19:30.

What is convenient is that this bus passes almost the entire resort along the main street along the embankment, and you can ask the driver to stop the bus at a convenient place and walk to your hotel. Or use local taxis, again best through Grab or Maxim apps, a short-distance trip within the city will cost about 40,000 dong (1.52 USD).

Recently, the VinBus bus system has started operating here. These are environmentally friendly, high-comfort buses, similar ones operate in Phu Quoc, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City. Currently, only two routes No. 23 and No. 16-2 are operating. No. 16-2 runs from the airport, costs 50,000 dong. Route maps, schedule and all information are on the official website https://maps.vinbus.vn/nt. You can install the Vinbus app and track the movement of these buses online.

You can also rent a car right at the airport, and drive to the hotel or vacation spot. However, the price for car rental in Vietnam remains quite high, from 40 dollars per day. But international rental companies have opened offices in the country:

In Vietnam, it is completely legal to drive a rented vehicle with an International Driving Permit (IDP) that complies with the requirements of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (read more about renting a motorbike and car in Vietnam). These are exactly the ones issued in the Russian Federation. Just don't forget that an IDP is only valid together with your national license, so you need to bring both documents to Vietnam. You can get an IDP at the traffic police (GIBDD), their cost/state fee is 3200 rubles. No re-taking exams is required to obtain an IDP.

Bus to Nha Trang

A great and very economical way to get to Nha Trang is to use intercity buses. But, of course, we are talking about trips only from other cities of Vietnam or from neighboring countries Cambodia or Laos. But buses will allow you to get to Nha Trang via Ho Chi Minh City airport and save money if, for example, you could not buy suitable tickets directly to Nha Trang. The only thing we note right away: going to Nha Trang by bus from Hanoi, Sa Pa, Ha Long and other places in the north is not a great idea, since it is too far, but theoretically such options still exist.

So, regular intercity buses, tourist buses and minivans (for short trips of a few hours) run to and from Nha Trang.

Large buses can be regular, but there are also sleeper buses, i.e. where you travel lying down and can sleep during the journey. Sleeper buses exist even for short trips of 4-5 hours, for example from Da Lat, and they run not only at night, but also during the day. If there is a choice on the route, we advise using sleeper buses.

This is what a sleeper bus looks like in Vietnam

There is also a special class of local minibuses called Limousine. In fact, these are high-comfort minivans, where you can recline the seat far back, there are even massage seats. They cost more than regular buses, even sleeper buses, but still, in our opinion, sleeper buses are better.

What routes are available

You can get to Nha Trang from almost any major city and resort in Vietnam, with rare exceptions. The most popular routes: Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, Da Lat, Phan Thiet and Mui Ne, Phan Rang, Quy Nhon, Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue, Hanoi, Vinh. Below there is a schedule of buses and trains to Nha Trang, you can find routes and schedule there.

Where to buy tickets

Tickets for buses and minivans can be purchased at travel agencies, at hotel reception desks, at bus stations, at bus company offices in resorts, online. There are completely different ticket and transfer options everywhere, i.e. there will be no place where you can see everything in one place and choose. Even at large bus stations, tickets of different companies are sold at different ticket offices, and you need to go around and ask everywhere to compare prices and routes.

And important! In some travel agencies, especially Russian-speaking ones, they greatly "inflate" ticket prices. From our experience, we once looked for tickets for the route Nha Trang-Quy Nhon. At a Russian travel agency, the price was 450,000 dong, locally 300,000, online 360,000 dong, but in the end at the ticket offices at Nha Trang bus station we bought for 225,000. The difference compared to the Russian-speaking travel agency is twice as much!!! Therefore, the most economical option is to buy tickets at the ticket offices of bus stations or at the carrier company's offices.

We have used and recommend the company FUTA Bus Lines many times. This is one of the largest carriers in the southern part of Vietnam, we make most of our trips with this company. The company has a website https://futabus.vn/, you can check the schedule and even buy tickets there if you have a foreign card. If you don't have a card, you can buy tickets at their ticket offices at all major bus stations, or look for offices of this company on Google Maps (it has many offices) and buy there.

And finally, you can book tickets on the well-known aggregator 12go, there are most routes and a very small markup. But Unionpay cards from Russian banks do not work there, only foreign ones:

Where buses arrive/depart from in Nha Trang, where are the bus stations

There is no single place for bus departure and arrival in Nha Trang. Each carrier company uses either one of the two large bus stations, or its own small bus stations or departs from its offices, or even has no point of departure/arrival and picks up passengers from hotels. Therefore, when buying, you need to clarify in each specific case the places of departure and arrival, and clarify if there is a free transfer to hotels or tourist areas.

Nevertheless, the largest and most affordable carriers operate at the two large bus stations of Nha Trang: southern and northern. But in fact, there is no strict division of routes between them, everything is mixed up.

  • Southern Bus Station of Nha Trang / Nha Trang Southern Interprovincial Bus Station

Important! Previously, the main bus station in Nha Trang was located not far from the city center, but now it has been moved to a new location far outside the city (southern bus station of Nha Trang on the map), all old bus stations are closed. Now you cannot get to the new bus station by city buses, only by taxi from 160,000 dong for a car taxi (6.08 USD) or 52,000 for a motorbike taxi (1.98 USD). But what is convenient, some carrier companies, in particular the aforementioned FUTA Bus Lines, offer a free transfer from/to the hotel in central Nha Trang from this bus station. But you need to clarify and request this when buying tickets, and if you don't do this, they may not offer it.

This bus station is where buses from Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet and Mui Ne, Vung Tau, Phan Rang, Da Lat and other cities of southern Vietnam mainly arrive/depart, but also from other cities of central and northern Vietnam, since there is no strict division.

  • North Bus Station of Nha Trang / North Nha Trang Bus Station

This small bus station is also located far from the center in the north of the city northern bus station of Nha Trang on the map). You can get to it by taxi from 80,000 dong (3.04 USD), motorbike taxi from 25,000 (0.95 USD).

Buses mainly depart from here to Da Nang, Hoi An, Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Hue, but also Ho Chi Minh City and Da Lat.

By train

Getting to Nha Trang by train is a good opportunity to save money compared to a flight and admire the landscapes of Vietnam from the train window. And if you choose a night train, you can save a day on accommodation. However, compared to buses, trains are still more expensive, and there are difficulties with buying tickets and seat availability, so our opinion is that you should not necessarily strive to go to Nha Trang by train if there is an alternative by bus. You can read more about trains in Vietnam and how to use them in our separate guide.

Train in Vietnam

The main railway line of Vietnam, connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, passes through Nha Trang. Several trains pass through the city daily in both directions, stopping at Nha Trang railway station (station on the map). The station is located very conveniently, almost in the center of the city, many hotels can be reached on foot. A taxi to the embankment and resort area will cost from 30,000 dong (1.14 USD).

Nha Trang railway station

It is better to buy train tickets in advance and preferably directly at the ticket offices of the main station. Travel agencies and ticket sales offices can inflate prices many times over. Moreover, you may fall victim to a very popular scam where you pay an agent for an expensive ticket, but actually receive the cheapest class. They count on you not going to sort things out with the travel agency 10 minutes before the train departure.

Also, buying online is relevant for tourists, since it is best to buy long-distance train tickets in advance. Unfortunately, buying official e-tickets on the railway website https://dsvn.vn/ is impossible, since payment is only accepted by plastic cards of Vietnamese banks and foreign ones, Russian cards are not accepted. You can also buy tickets through the website 12go.asia. This site has a Russian-language interface, but again purchase with Russian cards is not possible, only foreign cards.
