Chiang Mai Sunday Market, known as Sunday Night Market or Tha Phae Walking Street, is a large street market that operates only on Sunday evenings in the heart of Chiang Mai's old walled city on Ratchadamnoen Road, the main street. During its operation, the street is blocked for traffic and turns into a pedestrian zone.
The market is visited with pleasure by foreign tourists and locals, because it is one of the main weekly events in the whole province. Traders from the most remote villages of the province and even from neighboring provinces flock here to sell their goods. They sell everything here, from consumer goods from China to works of art and antiques. But the most important "feature" of this market, which distinguishes it from the daily Chiang Mai night market, is original souvenirs and products made by artisans from tribal villages of northern Thailand. Many of the products are made right there at the counters, so you can verify their authenticity.
Of course, as in any night market, street fast food is sold, cafes and food courts work, street artists perform. In general, the place is interesting and fun, and if you are lucky enough to be here on Sunday, be sure to visit this market.
