Accommodation in Chiang Mai is inexpensive by Thai standards, much cheaper than at Thailand's beach resorts. For example, the cost of a double room with a fan starts from 300 baht for two (approximately 9 USD, see Thailand currency, exchange rate), and a decent clean room with air conditioning and a private bathroom, like in the photo above, costs just over 500 baht for two when booked in advance (approximately 15 USD). Single accommodation in a Chiang Mai hostel can be obtained for 100 baht (approximately 3 USD). Moreover, the low price here does not at all mean terrible quality of the hotels themselves. For a small fee, you can rent a quite decent clean room here, although there will be no additional services and amenities such as a pool, restaurant, or meals. The cheapest rooms are not equipped with air conditioning (it is replaced by a fan), which is not such a big problem, since Chiang Mai is, firstly, located in the north of the country and, secondly, at an altitude of 316 meters above sea level. The evenings and nights here are not so hot, so if you really need to, you can safely refuse air conditioning in favor of savings.

Areas of Chiang Mai, where is it better to choose a hotel

Most of Chiang Mai's hotels are densely concentrated within the city center, also known as the tourist area or the old city. But there is also a small number of hotels located on the outskirts of the city and beyond in the suburbs of Chiang Mai. If you aim to get to know the city and its sights better, it is best to choose a hotel closer to the center, preferably within the old city. If you have other goals, for example, to relax in nature, you can consider other areas for accommodation.

• City areas

  • Old City of Chiang Mai (Old City). The most interesting area of the city - the Old City (Old City). This is the heart of the city and its historical center (location of the old city on the Chiang Mai map). The territory of the Old City is limited by a square (the same one that is so clearly visible on the Goolge map) of the remains of the wall around the old city and a water canal.

    If you plan to stay in an expensive and luxurious hotel, such can be found within the Old City near the Sunday Night Walking Street Market (Sunday Walking Street Market on the map).

    This is an ideal place for walking tours to get acquainted with the history and sights of the city, of which there are plenty here. This place is also famous for its many craft workshops, shops and stalls, restaurants and bars. In general - this is the real tourist center of the city. Well, if you don't find a place in the old city, you can safely choose a hotel in one of the nearby areas, and you can walk to the old city for walks.

    

  • Backpacker zone of cheap hotels. The backpacker zone, where a large number of small guesthouses are concentrated, is considered Tha Phae Street and its alleys. If you do not plan to book a hotel in advance and want to rent cheaper accommodation on the spot, then go straight here (backpacker area along Tha Phae Street on the map). The cheapest guesthouses here are located in the countless alleys (Soi) around this street. And the more expensive ones are located right along the main road on Tha Phae.

    

  • Night Bazar. This area closely adjoins the Old City, and at the same time is located by the river (night bazar on the map). Here are most of the mid-price hotels, many restaurants and bars. Most of the city's shops and business centers are also located here. Staying in this area you can walk to the old city, and easily get to the river.

    

  • Chinatown area. This compact area near the river and not far from the old city is considered one of the most colorful (Chinatown on the map). Here you can find very cheap hotels, perhaps even the cheapest in the whole city, but in terms of convenience and cleanliness they will be so-so. What is inconvenient is that it is quite noisy both day and night, and if you are unlucky and the room windows face the road, it will be very difficult to get enough sleep.

    

  • Riverside area. The advantage of choosing a hotel in the riverside area will be that you can get a room with a view of the river. And in general it is quieter and calmer here than in the Old City or Night Bazar. But when choosing a hotel, try to choose it not too far from the city center, otherwise you will be on the river, but far from everything interesting.

    

• Areas outside the city

  If you prefer to relax in quiet and peaceful places, closer to dense tropical forests and breathtaking natural landscapes, you can choose one of Chiang Mai's suburban areas.

  Outside the city there are good and inexpensive hotels where you can spend a few quiet days or weeks in the countryside surrounded by forests, gardens and with a view of the mountains. Most hotels here have their own extensive territory, swimming pools and other amenities for a serene holiday. One of the tourist entertainments in these places is trekking trips to the jungle and mountains.

  It is quite far to get to most hotels outside the city, so almost all of them offer airport transfer, car or train station transfer when booking a room with them. Some hotels provide a free shuttle bus to the city center several times a day, but this is rather rare.
