Sukhumvit district in Bangkok runs along the famous Sukhumvit Highway, one of the longest streets in the world (more than 400 kilometers long) (Sukhumvit on the map). The area itself is also very long, stretching for almost 10 kilometers.
This is, without a doubt, one of the most popular among tourists and the most saturated area with hotels. There are many shopping centers, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, travel agencies, currency exchange, massage parlors. In general, everything that tourists may need. The only difficulty is that the area is very large, and it is usually difficult to decide where to stay in order to have access to everything at once. To make it easier, it is best to settle in the most developed part of the district closer to the city within the streets from Soi 2 to Soi 33, perpendicular to the Sukhumvit highway. Then the infrastructure goes a little on the wane, although in principle it is not a problem to get there at any time by the BTS skytrain, whose line runs through the entire area.
In Sukhumvit it is worth stopping if you want to get acquainted with modern Bangkok, go shopping, have fun in the evening in bars and clubs. Well, or you just don't care where to stay in Bangkok, as long as you stay in a good hotel. There are also bars with girls here, especially on Soi Cowboy Street. And the entertainment center Nana Entertainment Plaza is generally a paradise for adult entertainment. And unlike the famous Patpong evening entertainment street in the Silom district, everything is more "civilized" and safer here.
Hotels in the Sukhumvit area are mostly of a very high level or above average in terms of both convenience and price. There are very few budget options and hostels, so if your budget is minimal, it's better to choose accommodation in the area of Khao San Road or Pratunam.
You can find and book hotels in the Sukhumvit area on the following websites, or through the search form, and to select a hotel by its location, see the map below:

How to get to Sukhumvit
Transport in the Sukhumvit area is very well represented: there is an above-ground and underground metro, the airport metro and the regular boat channel pass along the northern outskirts. If you stay here and choose a hotel near the metro station or from the river, then the whole city will be at your disposal.
Here's more on how to get to the area from other important places in the city:
-
From Suvarnabhumi Airport
A taxi ride from Suvarnabhumi will cost from 300 baht (9 USD, see the currency of Thailand and the exchange rate), plus 50 baht for the toll road. It is better not to get involved with a trip that is not on the counter, and order an official taxi at the counter when exiting the airport terminal on the ground floor (follow the Public Taxi sign). It is also convenient and safe to order a car through the Grab-taxi application, an analogue of Uber. Uber does not work in Thailand. Watch learn more about Grab in Thailand and how to use it here...
It is also convenient and inexpensive to get there using the ARL airport metro. The ARL line runs quite far from the center of Sukhumvit, so you will have to make a transfer or even two. Depending on the place you need to get to, you can take the ARL to Makkasan Station and transfer to the Phetchaburi Underground Metro station. From Phetchaburi, you can drive one stop to Sukhumvit Station, and then, if necessary, switch to the BTS skytrain to get to other parts of the area. See for more information about Bangkok Metro.
-
From Don Mueang Airport
From Don Mueang by taxi you can get from 270 baht (8.1 USD). It is also better to order a car at the counter at the exit or through the Grab application, and do not agree to travel at a fixed price.
Budget from Don Muang can also be reached, but you will have to make transfers. You can get there completely by bus, but it will take you several hours for such a trip, so we recommend going either by express bus to the nearest metro station, or by train to Hua Lamphong railway station, where you can change again by metro:
- By bus + metro. It is best to take one of the airport express buses A1, A2, A3 or A4. These buses are faster than regular city buses, because they go along the toll road bypassing traffic jams. They run from 07:30 to 23:30 every 20 minutes. The cost of A1 and A2 is 30 baht, A3 and A4 are 60 baht. Their stop is located immediately at exit No. 6 (Gate 6) from the terminal. The fastest and most convenient of them are A1 and A2. You need to go to Morchit station. Both the BTS skytrain and the underground MRT pass through here at once, so you can take the line that is more convenient for you.
- By train + metro. From the Don Mueang Railway Station, which is located across the street from the terminal (passing through the covered pedestrian crossing by signs), at least 30 trains depart daily at a cost of 5 baht, here is the schedule - railway.co.th. They take you to the main city Hua Lamphong Railway Station, where you can transfer to the underground MRT subway.
-
From the area of Khao San Road and the Royal Palace
To get to the main tourist area of Khao San Road, and the area with the main attractions of Bangkok on the Ratanakosin Peninsula, you will have to go either by taxi or make transfers. We do not take buses into account at all, as we will have to make transfers, besides, because of traffic jams, it takes a very long time to go.
-
By canal boat
A canal (klong) runs along the northern part of Sukhuvit, along which Nida Line cruises (see for more information about boats on Bangkok canals and how to use them here). You can use these boats to reach Pratu Nam Marina (in Pratunam district), where you can transfer to Golden Line boats to the final Panfa Leelard pier. From here, you can walk to Khao San Street, the Grand Royal Palace and other attractions, or take a taxi along a shorter route.
-
Boating on the Chaopraya River
This path is somewhat of a detour, but if you are interested in seeing the city, then it has a place to be. By skytrain with a transfer to another line, you need to get to the Saphan Taksin BTS station. Right next to it there is a pier of regular boats on the Chaopraya River, where you can take any boat to the Tha Chang pier or any other in the Royal Palace area.

What to see in the Sukhumvit area
There are no important tourist attractions in Sukhumvit. As in any place in the city, you can find temples, mosques, churches, monuments here, but there is nothing from the list of mandatory places to visit here. Therefore, if you want to get acquainted with the sights of the capital, you will have to get to interesting places by taxi, buses or metro. How to do this, see our full list of attractions in Bangkok.
