Until recently, there was no public transport on Phu Quoc at all, so you had to either use taxis (which are quite expensive here) or rent transport to get around. But luckily, they've now launched scheduled city buses, VinBus. We've already tried them out and want to say they're simply "the bomb" in a good way. So we highly recommend using them, especially if you're a budget traveler. Here's a detailed rundown:
Interesting fact! The company VinBus, which organized the bus service on Phu Quoc, was founded by Vietnam's first billionaire, Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong. He's the same person who founded the Vietnamese car brand VinFast, whose cars now fill the country's roads. For example, most taxis are now cars of this brand; you've likely seen them and maybe even ridden in them. We have a video about this car brand on our channel, definitely watch it. But the most interesting thing is that Pham Nhat Vuong studied in Moscow and made his first million in Ukraine with instant noodles.
How to Use Buses on Phu Quoc
In principle, it's very simple to use them: find a stop, wait for the bus, and get on. But here are some nuances worth mentioning:
- From January 1, 2026, buses became paid (previously they were completely free). Fare cost - from 20,000 VND (0.76 USD), payment by zone depending on route length.
- The buses have air conditioning and even WiFi, ample luggage space, you can even ride with large suitcases.
- Buses stop only at designated stops, and not always, but mostly only on demand. Sometimes drivers get so "carried away" driving that they don't notice passengers at stops. So when you see an approaching bus, it's better to signal yourself at the stop, for example by waving your hand. To get off at your stop, there's a button on the bus or simply tell the driver to stop.
- Not all stops are built as pavilions. Some places are simply marked by a bus stop road sign.
- To find the bus stop near the airport, go right after exiting the terminal following the signs; the stop is a couple of minutes from the exit. 📹 Watch our video on where to find the bus at Phu Quoc airport.
Bus Routes, Where You Can Go and Where to See the Map
Although the route network isn't very developed, it still allows travel between some beaches and areas, and you can also get to/from the airport and ferry piers. So in most cases, you don't even need to spend on a taxi; you can use the FREE ride (became paid from January 1, 2026).
The three most useful routes are #17, 19, and 20; they travel long distances covering almost the entire island. The other buses PQ3.5, V1, V2.1, V2.2, V2.3, V3.1, V3.2, V3.3, V4.1, V4.2, V4.3, V5.1, V5.2 and V5.3 are local routes in the northern part of Phu Quoc in the new Grand World tourist area, so they will only be useful if you stay at this resort, or if you need to get with a transfer to the amusement park or safari zoo.
You can find the current map of all routes, operating hours, and fares yourself on the website https://vinbus.vn/ (switch to the Phu Quoc tab there). Even better, download the Vinbus app, and you'll figure it all out there. There's a route planner and even live bus tracking on the map, with arrival predictions at stops.
