Overview of Ways to Get to Phan Thiet and Mui Ne

Mui Ne and Phan Thiet are located in southern Vietnam, 200 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City (Phan Thiet and Mui Ne on the map of Vietnam). The nearest international airport is in Ho Chi Minh City, and most tourists fly to Mui Ne through it, as it is the fastest and most convenient option. From the airport, you will have to get there by taxi, order a tourist transfer or take buses via Ho Chi Minh City, which is much cheaper but will take almost a whole day. Also, in theory, you can get to Mui Ne via Nha Trang airport, but depending on the season, a flight to Nha Trang may be a bit more expensive, and it's much farther to get from there.

From Nha Trang, Hanoi, Hoi An, Da Lat, Da Nang, Vung Tau and other major cities and resorts in Vietnam, you can get to Phan Thiet and Mui Ne by bus or train, but for some directions you will have to make a transfer in Ho Chi Minh City.

Here are brief instructions by destination to start with:

  • From Ho Chi Minh City Airport. There are direct minivans from the airport (expensive and run rarely), or go to the center of Ho Chi Minh City by taxi or city bus №152 or №109, and there transfer to an inexpensive bus.
  • From Ho Chi Minh City. Many buses run from several bus stations and from the tourist district in the center; we recommend going on Futa Bus Lines, they will take you to the hotel in Mui Ne.
  • From Vung Tau. Bus 3 times a day from Vung Tau bus station.
  • From Nha Trang. By plane via Ho Chi Minh City, direct sleeper bus, by train to Binh Thuan station (formerly Muong Man) and from there by taxi or city buses.
  • From Da Lat. Several buses per day to the bus station in Phan Thiet, from there to Mui Ne and beaches by taxi or city buses.
  • From Hanoi. Best by plane via Ho Chi Minh City airport, also by train to Binh Thuan station (formerly Muong Man) and from there by taxi or city buses.
  • From Phu Quoc. By plane via Ho Chi Minh City airport. There is also an overland route with a transfer via Ho Chi Minh City to the ferry to Phu Quoc Island, but it is long and will cost almost the same as a flight.

And now in detail from our own experience about all the ways to get to Phan Thiet and Mui Ne independently with schedule and prices:

Package Tours to Mui Ne and Phan Thiet

If you are not yet ready for independent travel and difficulties with independent movement, then maybe it's easier for you to buy a ready-made package tour to Mui Ne. Tour operators offer such tours not only from Moscow but also from the regions, and their cost includes transfer from the airport to the vacation spot. That is, they will meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel, and then at the end of the vacation, take you back to the airport. Today it is more convenient and cheaper to buy tours online, which can be done on one of these trusted sites:

How to Get from Ho Chi Minh City Airport to Phan Thiet and Mui Ne

Travel time from the airport is from 3 to 5 hours, depending on the time of day and traffic. The most convenient and fastest way to get from the airport is by taxi or order a tourist transfer, but there are also more budget options by bus.

  • Taxi and Transfer

You can order a taxi or transfer on the spot at the airport, or on websites kiwitaxi or intui.travel:

A taxi back from Mui Ne to the airport may be a bit cheaper, but it's better to take care of ordering in advance, and find a car at least a day before the trip, so it will be cheaper and more reliable.

  • Direct Minivans

During the daytime, minibuses depart from the Airport to Phan Thiet costing from 500,000 dong (19 USD), they take you to the hotel in Mui Ne or Phan Thiet, or end the journey at Lotte Mart shopping center. Travel time 4-5 hours.

You can find them at the exit from the domestic terminal across the road or at the counters when exiting the international terminal. You can check the schedule and book tickets online for this route on the website 12go.asia, but payment is NOT accepted by ANY Russian cards there.

  • By Bus with Transfer via City Center

Another, more reliable and inexpensive option is with a transfer via Ho Chi Minh City. But this route will take almost a whole day. There is no need to book tickets in advance, you can buy on the spot and leave immediately. Buses depart at least every hour from 6 am to 23 pm, travel time 5-6 hours.

The simplest option is to go with a transfer via the tourist center of Ho Chi Minh City (district №1, Ben Thanh Market and Pham Ngu Lao street). To do this, take city bus №152 (5000 dong / 0.19 USD) or №109 (15000 dong / 0.57 USD) from the airport and ride it to the tourist street Pham Ngu Lao. Read in detail about how to get to the tourist district in the center of Ho Chi Minh City here. On this street there are several travel agencies and offices of bus companies where you can immediately buy a ticket for the nearest flight and leave for Mui Ne.

We recommend the large company Futa Bus Lines. They have the lowest prices – from 200,000 dong to the hotel in the Mui Ne resort area, and comfortable sleeper buses. From the office in the center, they will take you by minivan to one of the bus stations, and there you will transfer to a large bus. These buses go first to the bus station in Phan Thiet, and then pass through the entire resort area to the Mui Ne bus station, so you can get off at any convenient place near the hotel you need.

You can also leave for Phan Thiet and Mui Ne via local bus stations Mien Tay or Mieng Dong Moi, and you can get to them from the airport on city buses with transfers. But honestly, there isn't much point in this, because you will leave in exactly the same way and for the same money from the tourist center of Ho Chi Minh City as described above.

  • By Rental Car

If you prefer to travel at your own discretion and not depend on anyone, you can rent a car at Ho Chi Minh City airport, and drive to Mui Ne in it. In Vietnam, it is completely legal to drive rented vehicles with an International Driving Permit (IDP) that meets the requirements of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (read more about renting a motorbike and car in Vietnam). Exactly such are issued in the Russian Federation, and previously it was necessary to obtain temporary local licenses, and no others were recognized in the country. Now you can safely drive with a driver's license issued in Russia. Just don't forget that the IDP is only valid together with the national license, so you need to take both types of licenses to Vietnam. You can get an IDP at the traffic police (GIBDD), their cost/state duty is 3200 rubles. No exams are required to obtain an IDP.

The price for car rental remains quite high, from 40 dollars per day. Offices of international rental companies work in the country, you can book a car and get it at the airport on these websites:

By Bus

Intercity Bus to Mui Ne

Traveling around Vietnam by bus is very convenient and inexpensive, it is generally the cheapest type of transport for intercity travel. But it is not as simple as it may seem at first glance. The main problem is that there are no unified stations or places of departure and arrival of buses, and no unified ticket offices and online booking systems. Therefore, when you need to get from point "A" to point "B", you need to consider many places of departure and arrival at once, and many different carrier companies. Therefore, we will start the information about buses to Phan Thiet and Mui Ne with bus stations:

There is a new bus station in the Mui Ne resort area, it is located almost at the Mui Ne village itself (Mui Ne bus station on the map). At the moment, only buses from Ho Chi Minh City by companies Futa Bus Lines and Mex Bus depart and arrive at it. Sleeper buses Futa cost 180,000 dong, Mex Bus offers "limousine" (enhanced comfort minibuses) 400,000 dong.

New Bus Station in Mui Ne

If you need to get to Mui Ne by bus from other places, for example from Nha Trang or Da Lat, then you need to look for buses to Phan Thiet. Moreover, in Phan Thiet there are at least four places of departure and arrival of buses:

  • Main Phan Thiet Bus Station. Located almost in the center of the city (Phan Thiet bus station on the map). Most long-distance buses arrive here. From here you can get to the hotel by taxi or more budget-friendly walk or take city bus №3 to Coop Mart shopping center, and there transfer to bus №1 to the Mui Ne resort area or to №6 to the Thien Tanh and Bikini Beach resort area.
  • Old Phan Thiet Bus Station. Located three kilometers from the center of Phan Thiet (old Phan Thiet bus station on the map). Some buses, including from Ho Chi Minh City, still arrive at this bus station. Here you can take bus №1 to get to the center or further to Mui Ne.
  • Lotte Mart Shopping Center. Some buses from Ho Chi Minh City and suburban ones arrive at the parking lot near this shopping center. From here you can take city bus №3 or №6 to Coop Mart shopping center, where if necessary transfer to bus №1 to the Mui Ne resort area.
  • Coop Mart Shopping Center. Private minivans on some routes pass by the main bus station without entering it, but drop off passengers at this shopping center parking lot.

In addition, some companies go to their offices in different places in Phan Thiet or in the resort area, or deliver to the hotel doors.

At the Bus Station in Phan Thiet

And now regarding specific directions:

  • From Ho Chi Minh City

Buses from Ho Chi Minh City also depart from different places and from different bus stations, but if you are staying in tourist district №1, then it is most convenient to buy tickets and leave from Pham Ngu Lao street. On this street on the side of Ben Thanh Market there are many offices and travel agencies where you can at any time, even right before departure, buy tickets for a bus or minivan to Phan Thiet or Mui Ne.

We recommend Futa Bus Lines, they have sleeper buses costing from 200,000 dong. The buses go through the entire resort area to the Mui Ne bus station, so you can get to the desired hotel in the resort area. Also on this street there is Hanh Cafe, they transport for 220,000 dong to their office in the center of the Mui Ne resort area.

  • From Nha Trang

Direct sleeper buses Hanh Cafe and Techbus run from Nha Trang to Mui Ne, travel time 5-6 hours. The buses go to their offices in the center of the resort area, from where it is easy to get to the hotel by taxi, city bus №1 or even on foot. Price from 200,000 dong directly from the companies, or from 300,000 when purchased at travel agencies including transfer from the hotel to the bus station. Schedule and ticket booking are available on 12go.asia, but Russian cards for booking are not accepted. If you don't have a foreign card, you can buy tickets in Nha Trang at company offices, street travel agencies or hotels.

More buses run from Nha Trang to the main Phan Thiet bus station, from where you can get to the vacation spot by taxi or city buses, as written above.

  • From Da Lat

Many buses run on the route from Da Lat to Phan Thiet and Mui Ne both during the day and at night. Travel time 5-6 hours, ticket from 250,000 dong. Among them are Futa Bus (departs from Da Lat bus station) and companies with their own departure places. Arrive in the center of the Mui Ne resort area and to the Phan Thiet bus station. Tickets and schedule on 12go.asia

  • From Da Nang

Hanh Cafe runs from Da Nang directly to Mui Ne once a day. Ticket from 600,000 dong, travel time 24 hours. Or go to the Phan Thiet bus station, there are more flights there. Tickets and schedule on 12go.asia

  • From Hoi An

Tourist buses run from Hoi An to Mui Ne several times a day. Tickets from 800,000 dong, travel time 18 hours. Tickets and schedule on 12go.asia

By Train

Train in Vietnam

There are two railway stations near Phan Thiet, and you can get here from different cities: from Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Phan Rang, Da Nang, Hue, Hanoi. But honestly, in our opinion, traveling here by train is not very convenient and expensive. Because compared to buses, trains are noticeably more expensive, and the railway stations are located very inconveniently and far from the resort area. The only advantages of trains, perhaps, are that they run a bit faster than buses. If you still decide to go by train, then read all about trains in Vietnam, how to use them, where to buy tickets and more here.

And now in more detail about Phan Thiet stations:

  • Binh Thuan Station

15 kilometers from Phan Thiet is the Binh Thuan railway station, this is the former Muong Man station (Binh Thuan railway station on the map of Phan Thiet). And it's a full 30 km from this railway station to the resort area. From here to Mui Ne you can take a taxi from 450,000 dong (17.1 USD) when ordering through Grab or Maxim apps, and a bit more expensive if catching a car on the spot. Instead of a taxi, you can get there budget-friendly on bus №9 to the center of Phan Thiet, get off there at Coop Mart shopping center, and transfer to bus №1 to Mui Ne or bus №6 to the Phan Thiet Thien Tanh and Bikini Beach resort area.

Here is information about these buses:

    • Bus №9. Goes past Binh Thuan railway station and past Phan Thiet Railway Station, and further to the city center. Runs from 5:30 to 18:30 every 30-40 minutes. Cost 8000 – 35,000 dong.

    • Bus №1. This is the most popular and convenient route for tourists, as it passes through the entire Mui Ne resort area and to the center of Phan Thiet. Fare costs 8000-20000 depending on distance. Runs from 05:30 to 19:00 every 20-30 minutes.

    • Bus №6. These buses depart from the center of Phan Thiet from Lotte Mart shopping center, pass by Coop Mart, and then go through the Thien Tanh and Bikini Beach resort area to Ke Ga lighthouse. They run every 30-40 minutes from 6:00 to 18:00, fare costs 8,000 – 25,000 dong.

The main railway line of Vietnam passes through this station, and you can get here by train not only from Ho Chi Minh City, but also from Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phan Rang, Hue and other cities. The only thing to remember when planning a route is that not all trains stop at this station.

We remind you that it is best to check the schedule, cost and availability of tickets on the official website of the Vietnam Railways - https://dsvn.vn/, but it is impossible to buy tickets with payment by Russian cards there. If you do not have a foreign card, you will have to buy tickets at the station ticket offices or at street travel agencies.

  • Phan Thiet Station

Another station, Phan Thiet Railway Station, is located much closer to the center of Phan Thiet, practically on its outskirts (Phan Thiet railway station on the map). From it you can get to the vacation spot in the same way as from the previous station, i.e., by taxi (approximately 300,000 dong to the center of Mui Ne), or by buses №9 with a transfer to №1 or №6.

But the problem is that only trains from Ho Chi Minh City go to this station, this is the SPT2 train. Departs daily from the main Ho Chi Minh City railway station at 06:30 and arrives in Phan Thiet at 11:05. Seats are only seated, ticket from 161,000 dong (6.12 USD). Back from Phan Thiet to Ho Chi Minh City, the train departs at 13:10, arrives at 17:30.

As a result, taking into account the need to get from the railway stations to the resorts and tourist areas, it turns out to be more expensive and longer in time than traveling by bus. And the bus schedule is more flexible and frequent. Therefore, we advise using this option only if you really want to ride on local trains.
