An overview of the sights on Cat Ba and what you can see here
Cat Ba Island cannot be called the center of entertainment and attractions of Vietnam. There are almost no historical sites, temples, no amusement parks and attractions at all, but there are several natural attractions that attract tourists here, and in general there are enough classes for a week of rest or more.
The most important attractions of Cat Ba, because of which tourists are eager to get here, are Cat Ba National Park, Halong and Lanha Bays. These are must-visit places, and although the bays can be seen with an excursion from Hanoi or Halong, it is much more pleasant to combine a visit to these natural wonders with a beach holiday on the island. In addition, you can see mangroves, several observation decks and caves, an old bridge on stilts and a temple. There are two more historical sites: the cannon fort and the cave hospital.
But the tourist pastime on the island is not limited to viewing these attractions. In fact, the tourist infrastructure for such a small town as Cat Ba Town is very well developed, and you can find a lot of interesting excursions and activities in local travel agencies.
- Hiking enthusiasts can take several hiking trails, the most popular of which is an 8–kilometer trek through the National Park to the village of Viet Hai. You can overcome them yourself or with an excursion.
- You can rent a mountain bike from 100,000 VND (3.8 USD), and go to drive around Cat Ba wherever your eyes look, except, however, the territory of the national park, where you can't go by bike.
- You can explore the perimeter of the island and even visit the islets closest to it by kayak, the rent of which costs from 150,000 (5.7 USD) VND per day for two, available at least near the Ben Beo marina. You can find a secluded wild beach, or moor to the rocky shores and climb a little on the rocks.
- Another popular form of entertainment is rock climbing. The local mountains are just perfect for this and are suitable for both experienced athletes and amateur beginners for climbing without equipment. You can find good places on Cat Ba itself and on the neighboring islets. For this purpose, special tours are offered, including a boat, equipment rental, and instructor support.
Evening rest on Cat Ba is well developed by local standards. Every evening there are several clubs with the most progressive music and pool parties. Beer bars and karaoke are inviting visitors with discounts and even a free beer mug during happy hours, massage parlors, a sauna, a Jacuzzi, and spa treatments are offered. If you get tired of partying, you can sit in silence in a street cafe near the entrance to the fishing port, where fresh draft beer is poured for only 20,000 VND (0.76 USD) per mug.
How to visit attractions on Cat Ba and excursions
Some interesting places on Cat Ba can be visited by yourself on a rented transport, taxi or even a local bus. If you have experience driving a motorcycle and a category "A" license, then from 100,000 VND you can rent a two-wheeled vehicle and ride around the island on it to the most remote points, and you can download the points themselves to the navigator from our map. You can also rent a bike from 50 000, but in this case you will not reach the remote attractions. You can also use taxi rides through apps or hire a car for the whole day. We told you more about transport on Cat Ba and how to move here ...
However, the most important sights of Cat Ba can be visited only with excursions on the water. We are talking about cruises to Halong and Lanha bays, to monkey island, to caves on the islands, and so on. Such excursions are offered in all Cat Ba travel agencies and hotels. Prices are about the same everywhere, but compare the tour programs very carefully, they are different.
You can also come to the Ben Beo marina and hire a private boat with a guide there. You don't even have to look for anyone: as soon as you appear there, you will immediately be offered "help" options.
And, of course, you can book excursions online on trusted sites with reviews. Prices for similar excursions there are about the same as in street travel agencies, we compared:

Viet Hai Village
Viet Hai village on Cat Ba Island Until recently, it was a completely unknown attraction for foreign tourists, and indeed a rather isolated place. After all, this fishing village has not been connected to the outside world by road for a long time (and even now only a bad dirt road leads to it), and being surrounded by tropical forests of the Cat Ba National Park, it was communicated only by water. But from a certain point on, the village found itself on a tourist hiking route through the National Park, and then attracted the attention of foreigners. At first glance, Viet Hai is nothing special, and looks almost the same as any other remote village in Vietnam. But in fact, if you take a closer look and spend more time here, you will notice that the villagers still use little modern tools and run a subsistence economy, receiving almost nothing from the outside. Cannon fort (Cannon fort)
Cannon Fort Unfortunately, in 2025 we could not get into the Cannon Fort. The road is blocked by a forbidding sign and a barrier. It is not known whether the passage will be restored.
The fort was built in 1942 during the Second World War by the Japanese military, but later it was also used in the confrontation between the Vietnamese and the French. Today, tourists can visit this place as one of the local attractions.
Here you will see well-preserved defensive structures and even guns, some of them of Soviet origin. There is even a mini-museum: the old buildings housed the furnishings and exhibits of wartime. But apart from the fort itself and its cannons, this place is attractive because from two viewing platforms there are excellent views of Lan Ha Bay. Especially beautiful views open at sunrise and sunset, if, of course, you are lucky with the weather. There is also a cafe with excellent views and reasonable prices. Read more about the Cannon Fort here...

Cave Hospital (Hospital Cave)
Cave hospital on the island of Cat Ba This is a military hospital equipped in natural rock caves from 1963 to 1965 to confront the United States. Due to the thick layer of rock, it was considered practically invulnerable to bombing by American aircraft. It functioned until 1975.
There are 17 different rooms on three levels of the hospital: an operating room, a communication room, wards, a kitchen, a cinema, a room for secret negotiations, etc. But only two levels are available for inspection, the third is closed due to the threat of landslides. The ticket price includes a tour guide in broken Vietnamese-English, but the main points can be understood, and thanks to this, the visit becomes interesting. Cat Ba Observation Deck and Monument
Observation deck and monument This is another observation deck, which is geographically located in the center of Cat Ba Town. It is equipped with benches and lanterns, a monument is installed on it, and it also offers beautiful views of the bays surrounding the island and the city.

The Green staircase
View from the stairs, but we were unlucky with the weather A green staircase leads to the top of the hill, where a functioning telecommunications antenna is located at an altitude of about 60 meters, and at its foot there is a small observation deck. More precisely, there is no observation deck as such, but there is a small patch of surface where you can sit down to admire the views opening in all directions, if, of course, you are lucky with the weather (unfortunately, we were unlucky). Climbing up is not difficult, but quite extreme for those who are afraid of heights. The entrance to the staircase is closed with a lattice and a lock, but for a nominal fee of 20,000 DONG (bargaining is appropriate) for tourists, it is opened by the "keepers" of the keys. Wooden bridge on stilts and Mau Hai Ha Temple
A wooden bridge on stilts and a temple on Cat Ba Island In the north of the island there is a little–known and little-noticed landmark - an old wooden bridge on stilts (stilt wooden bridge). It leads along a shallow bay to a small Buddhist temple Mau Hai Ha on an islet – one of the most sacred on Cat Ba. You can freely walk across the bridge to the temple, light a stick of incense there, or just sit in silence. If you go around the temple, then behind it you will find a small cave with shrines, the meaning of which, unfortunately, is unknown to us.

House Museum 102
House-Museum 102 on Cat Ba Island This is not exactly a traditional museum, but rather a theme park of unusual sculptures and installations created by a local artist. This house-museum may be inferior to Dalatsky in scope and fame, but we are sure that lovers of unusual places will definitely like it here. Its entire territory, both inside and out, is filled with complex and interesting sculptures. But it's not just decor.
