Rocks Grandfather and Grandmother (Hin Ta And Hin Yai) do not need a special introduction, as these stone formations are known all over the world even to those who have never been to Koh Samui and Thailand in general. If you really have never heard of these stones, we will tell you a little about them.

These stones are located at the southern tip of Lamai Beach. By some quirk of nature, two natural stone formations resembling male and female reproductive organs were formed next to each other, literally a few dozen meters from each other. True, sometimes skeptics say that Thais made them themselves to attract tourists, but it's up to you to believe it or not.

This place is very popular with tourists, and there are always a lot of people here, including locals. People come here to take pictures, because this is perhaps the most famous attraction of Koh Samui. Some arrange picnics on the stones, because for Thais there is nothing shameful and embarrassing about these stones, they treat them almost as a shrine and a place that helps to conceive children. Some people even manage to swim at the foot of the stones, but it's quite dangerous. A market, paid parking (20 baht) was opened next to the stones, and an observation deck overlooking Lamai Beach was opened on a high rock next door.

In general, it is worth saying that you just have to get here, no matter what beach you stay on the island.

The legend of the Stones

A local island legend is inscribed on a tablet next to the stones, and it tells about an elderly couple named Ta Kreng (Grandfather Kreng) and Yai Riem (grandmother Riem), who lived with their son. When he grew up and it was time to marry him, they went by boat to the neighboring province of Prachuap Khiri Khan to ask for the daughter's hand in marriage for her son from her father named Ta Monglai (grandfather Monglai). During the voyage, they were overtaken by a storm and they could not swim to the shore and died in the sea, while turning into stones in order to become parents of their son's future bride, at least in this form. Since then, they have been standing on the shore.

🕐 Working hours

The stones are available around the clock, but it makes sense to visit them during the daytime.

💵Entrance fee / ticket price

Access to the stones is free, parking is 20 baht (but you can leave the motorcycle a little further away for free), entrance to the observation deck on a nearby rock is 20 baht (see currency of Thailand, exchange rate).

🚶 How to get there

Grandma and Grandpa Rocks are located at the southern tip of the beach and Lamai area (Grandpa and Grandma Rocks on the map). You can reach the stones on foot from Lamai Beach, but you can't reach them directly along the beach, you'll have to get off the beach a little and go around the rock with an observation deck. By rented transport or taxi, you can drive up close here and leave the transport in the parking lot. By route taxis going along the ring road, you can also easily get to the right exit (all drivers know this place, you just need to tell them where you need to go), and then walk 500 meters on foot.
