The Road to Wat Phra That Doi Tung

Doi Tung Temple or fully Wat Phra That Doi Tung is one of those temples that can very much fall into the soul, or even be remembered for a lifetime. It is located at the very top of Mount Tung (Doi Tung) and is the end point of the climb. Initially, two stupas were built here in the 10th century, and the temple was erected around them much later. The pagodas were built in order to store the Buddha's left clavicle bone in them, which is still in the temple to this day.

Now this temple is the highest point in Chiang Rai province (1389 meters, although some sources mistakenly indicate 2000 meters) and the most revered place of worship in northern Thailand. Many pilgrims flock to this temple. From here you can also see breathtaking views of the mountains and forests towards the border with Myanmar, which is only 2 kilometers away in a straight line. And you will get no less cool views on the way here from Chiang Mai along the mountain road.

If you drive another half kilometer behind the temple towards the top to the parking lot, and then walk about another half kilometer along the steps and a beautiful road with bells, you will get to another very interesting temple Wat Noi Doi Tung, which will be the culmination of your journey on the mountain. It is from here that you can enjoy views of the valley at the foot of Doi Tung Mountain.

🚶 How to get there

Doi Tung Temple is located 60 kilometers from Chiang Rai on the way to Maesai (Phra Tat Doi Tung Chiang Rai Temple on the map). You can get here only by rented transport or if you hire a taxi, it takes almost 2 hours to go one way. On the way you can stop at the Royal Villa Doi Tung (Doi Tung Royal Villa) and Mae Fa Luang Garden (Mae Fa Luang Garden). Be careful when driving: the last 15 kilometers of the way, although they pass on good asphalt, but the road is very winding, a real mountain serpentine.

Friends, we remind you that it is much more interesting to get acquainted with the sights of Thailand with the help of excursions, and therefore we advise you to look at options with online booking and reviews on these excursion aggregators:
