Prices for accommodation in Chiang Rai, even by Thai standards, are very pleasant. For example, a budget room for two with a fan can be rented from 300 baht (approximately 8.92), a bed in a hostel from 99 baht (approximately 2.94), and a more or less cozy room with air conditioning and a private bathroom from 600 baht (approximately 17.84).
By the way, as for the air conditioner, it is not really needed in Chiang Rai, and indeed in the northern provinces, since the climate here is in any case cooler than in the center and in the south. In addition, the temperature is affected by the height of the resorts, because this is a mountainous area. So if you really need to save a couple of hundred baht, then you can safely take a room with a fan without air conditioning.
If you are heading to Chiang Rai just to visit the "Golden Triangle" and get acquainted with the Sami popular tourist attractions in the city, then, in our opinion, it is most convenient to stay in one of the hotels in the tourist center of the city, it is within walking distance from Chiang Rai Night market and the old bus station (old bus station on the map). Then you can walk around the entire center and visit the most interesting and important city temples, a museum, and in the evening go shopping and have a delicious meal at the food court or from the stalls of the night market. It will be possible to travel to the Golden Triangle and the White Temple during the day by bus from the old bus station, rent a car or motorcycle for a trip, or buy an excursion.
Well, if you prefer a secluded holiday in the middle of nature, you can even find accommodation away from the city in the jungle or in the mountains, for example in the village of Maesalong.

If you want to come to Chiang Rai without booking a hotel and look for accommodation on the spot, then this is also possible. Again, it is best to start the search from the old bus station. You can find inexpensive accommodation in a hostel here even from 99 baht (approximately 2.94, see about the money of Thailand and the exchange rate here) for a bed in a dormitory room without air conditioning with a shared bathroom. And in any case, it's best to choose a hotel in Chiang Rai closer to the bus station, since all the evening fun in the city takes place right here at the night market.
It is also not a problem to find budget accommodation on the spot and in other towns of the province if you decide to make a route with overnight stays along the way.
