Chatuchak Market in Bangkok (Chatuchak market) is a place that can be attributed not only to shopping, but also to the category of attractions or entertainment of the capital worth visiting by tourists. Of course, to be honest, you should not try to get to the market on your first trip to Bangkok, but it is better to see the temples and palaces of the city for the first time. But if you are not coming here for the first time, then Chatuchak is worth a visit and can definitely surprise you. Moreover, it is not necessary to go to Chatuchak just for the sake of shopping, or you can just walk between the shopping malls. After all, according to some estimates, this is the largest city market in the whole world! Therefore, it will surprise and delight even sophisticated tourists and seasoned travelers.
The market opened back in 1942, i.e. it is already more than 80 years old! It works only on weekly weekends, or rather, from Friday to Sunday. And every week more than 15 thousand merchants gather here, offering their goods: from clothes and accessories to interior items, flowers, animals and even antiques. Of course, souvenirs and all kinds of handicrafts are sold in large quantities, which will be of interest to tourists.
The daily flow of visitors to the market reaches 300,000 people. Just imagine, it's a whole big city. Therefore, if you decide to visit it, be prepared for the fact that you will have to walk a lot and need to be able to navigate. The market is divided into commodity zones, although they are not strictly observed, and, for example, the same souvenirs and crafts can be found almost anywhere in the market. But nevertheless, the general scheme of trade is observed. To make it easier to navigate and look for what you need, you can take a card when entering the market, they are issued for free, although they are not always available.
In addition to walking and shopping, you can have a good snack here. There are a lot of outdoor cafes, a food court, there are trays with Thai fast food at every turn.
Visiting Tips
- Prices on the market are fixed (indicated on the price tag), and some sellers do not have price tags. Everywhere you need to bargain, especially in places where there are no price tags, and then you manage to bring down the price almost twice.
- Do not forget about security. There are crooks and pickpockets everywhere, so keep an eye on your belongings, which is especially important in the terrible rush hour crush at the market.
- It is best to visit the market on Saturday and Sunday, as there are very few traders and buyers on other days.

🚶 How to get there
Chatuchak market is located in one of the central urban areas of Bangkok, but it is quite far from the popular tourist areas for accommodation (Chatuchak market on the map).
If you are staying in areas Pratunam, Siam, Silom, Sukhumvit or others where there is access to the metro, it is more convenient and fastest to get to Chatuchak by metro. You need to go to the BTS Mo Chit skytrain station, or to the MRT Kamphaeng Phet underground subway station. Kamphaeng Phet is more convenient, since from it you get almost to the entrance to the market, and from the elevated station you will have to walk 5 minutes.
From areas where there is no metro, and in particular from tourist area Khaosan Road you will have to take a taxi or city buses. Taxi will cost from 200 baht (from 5.95 USD). It is cheaper to order a car through Grab, Maxim or InDrive applications. Payment for travel by card in the application (Russian cards are not accepted) or in cash at the end of the trip. Buses are much cheaper, but you will have to go at least an hour. From Khao San to Chatuchak there is a bus number 59 (travel from 8 baht), and from other areas you can set a route by public transport using Google maps or in the ViaBus application.
