In 2026, the shrine is almost abandoned due to a change in ownership of the land it sits on. The little house with the shrine still exists, but it's been moved to a slightly different spot, and there are no more offerings of penis figurines or dresses next to it — only photos remain of the former diversity and uniqueness. We can no longer recommend visiting this place.
Temple of Penises or Fertility in Bangkok (Chao Mae Tuptim Shrine) is a very unusual place, and quite rarely visited by tourists. Groups of tourists are not taken here by bus, and only single tourists or locals visit this place, and this is also its charm. Even not all locals know about its existence, but, nevertheless, the news of its existence has spread all over the world.
In fact, this is not a temple, but its name can be literally translated as a fertility shrine dedicated to the goddess Chao Mae Tuptim. This is just a place where a traditional Thai object of worship is installed - a spirit house with an image of the goddess inside and a large petrified penis of some animal, and the gifts brought are lying around. But not in appearance, but in content, this place is very interesting and important for many. The fact is that the goddess Chao Mae Tuptim is the goddess of fertility and good luck, and she is ready to give fertility to those people who brought her gifts. For some reason, in this place it so happened that as gifts and gratitude for the children received, mostly figurines of phalluses are brought here.
We (the authors of the site) visited this place twice, and the last time in 2023. And according to our feelings, since the previous time, the shrine has become noticeably dilapidated, as if it had been slightly forgotten. Figures of different shapes and sizes have become much smaller, ribbons and dresses hang shabby and dirty, around is also not very clean. But, nevertheless, it is still felt that believers still come here and try to take care of the holy place.
As the story goes, a Thai millionaire and businessman named Nai Lert installed a very ordinary perfume house in this place in the shade of a ficus tree at the beginning of the 20th century. Then he did not even think that this place would become the place of the goddess of fertility and would acquire so many unusual gifts. When the preferences of the goddess changed so radically, no one knows for sure, only legends tell about it.
They say that you should not come here just for the sake of curiosity. Come here only if you really need the help of the goddess or want to thank her. It is not necessary to bring a penis figurine as a thank you, although locals say that the goddess responds to such figurines more often. If you don't find a penis figurine, you can bring drinks, food, flowers, animal figurines or other gods, and even clothes. In general, you can bring anything that a woman might like, because this is a female deity.

🚶 How to get there
The shrine is located on the territory of the Mövenpick Hotel, also known as the Swiss Hotel, and it was also called the Nai Lert Bangkok Hotel just a few years ago (cm. on the map, the position is indicated with an accuracy of one meter). The nearest metro stations to this place are BTS Chit Lom and BTS Phloen Chit. From them you can reach the shrine in 10 minutes on foot.
Given that the shrine is located on the territory of the hotel, access there by the hotel administration was conditionally limited, but you can still get to it without any problems. The easiest way is to approach the guard at the main entrance to the hotel (he sits in a booth and lifts the barrier and lets cars through) and ask how to get to the shrine. But if the security guard or other hotel staff refuses to help, or says that there is nothing like that here, look for yourself.
There are several options for how to get to it through the hotel grounds:
- Through the hotel lobby. At the main entrance to the hotel from Thanon Witthayu Street, feel free to pass by the security guard and enter the main entrance of the hotel, go through the lobby past the reception and go out into the courtyard of the hotel to the pool, go around it to the right and move right along the building until you hit the shrine.
- Through the parking lot. At the main entrance to the hotel from Thanon Witthayu Street, pass by the security guard, but do not enter the hotel building, but walk along the building to the right along the car road until you see a covered parking lot going inside the building. It is necessary to go through the entire parking lot along the road until you leave the building. The shrine will be on your right.
- Through the entrance for cars. You can get to the hotel not only through the main entrance, but also from the car entrance (via a small bridge) from Soi Som Khit street. As soon as you enter the hotel through this entrance, turn left and literally after a few tens of meters you will come to a shrine.
For all options, keep in mind that you will not be able to immediately see the shrine, since it is hidden by the foliage and trunks of nearby trees.
