Description and is it worth a visit

Hindu Temple Sri Maha Mariamman

There are only two major Hindu temples in Bangkok, and Sri Maha Mariamman is the most beautiful of them and the most important. It was built in the 1860s by immigrants from India, and now it is one of the main places of worship of the entire Indian community of Bangkok. Inside you can see beautiful statues of the gods Ganesha, Shiva, Krishna, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Kartik, Maramman, Kali, Saraswati and others, but a special place is occupied by the statue of the goddess Uma, which is especially revered here. There are always a lot of people here and ceremonies with the participation of believers always take place. This, by the way, makes this temple very different from most Buddhist temples in Bangkok, which are empty most of the time.

The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple (also spelled as Sri Maha Mariam man) can be visited for free, there are no prohibitions for tourists. But it is absolutely impossible to take pictures and video inside. There is a guard at the entrance who warns about this and monitors violations quite strictly. They say that previously it was possible to get permission to shoot if you leave a donation and ask the caretaker for permission, but we did not manage to do this during a visit to the temple in 2023.

Attention! During our visit to this temple in November 2023, entry without a mask was prohibited. Maxi was given out at the entrance, but just in case, take the mask with you, otherwise there is a chance not to get inside the temple.
