Baan Khrua is a historic neighborhood in the very center of Bangkok that belongs to the ultra-modern Siam district. Here, among skyscrapers, huge shopping malls and BTS elevated tracks, a corner of the old city has survived, where descendants of Vietnamese and Cambodian settlers live. This place is often called a "village in the middle of a megacity."
The history of the neighborhood goes back to the 19th century, when people from Vietnam and Cambodia, fleeing wars and persecution, began to settle here. They built their houses, temples and a mosque here, preserving their traditions and way of life. Today Baan Khrua is a labyrinth of narrow winding streets, wooden houses, family cafes and small shops. Everything looks like a village – and this is two steps from the most modern district of Bangkok.
The main attractions of the area are the atmosphere itself and the contrast. There's the Darul Aman Mosque, a Vietnamese temple, and several old buildings. If you're here, it's worth just walking and exploring – the area is small but very atmospheric.
By the way, a few minutes' walk from here is the Jim Thompson House Museum – the one sometimes mistakenly taken for a silk museum. We suggest combining a walk through Baan Khrua with a visit to this museum: the contrast between the traditional life of the community and the elegant house of the American businessman who revived Thai silk will be very rich.
We think this place will be interesting primarily for those who have already explored Bangkok inside and out and want to see something new. Tours don't come here, there are no crowds of tourists, and that makes the walk especially pleasant. The streets are narrow and winding, so it's easier to get around on foot. Family cafes operate here, where you can try local cuisine and feel like a guest of the locals.
Is it worth going here specifically? If it's your first time in Bangkok and you have limited time, it's hardly worth dedicating a day to this area. But if you've already seen the main attractions, want a break from tourist routes or are just looking for an unusual experience – Baan Khrua is definitely worth your attention. Especially if you're staying in the Siam or Pratunam area – you can walk here.

Baan Khrua is in central Bangkok, next to the Siam and Pratunam districts, along the Saen Saep canal (Baan Khrua on the map).
The most convenient way is by commuter boat on the Golden Line canal to Saphan Charoenphon Pier (see more about Bangkok's water transport). From the Siam and Pratunam districts you can walk. The walk along the Saen Saep canal itself is already an interesting attraction.
