Top 15 Attractions of Karachay-Cherkessia with Photos, Prices, and Visiting Instructions
Tourist Route "Alibek Gorge"
This is the most popular hiking route from Dombay, where you'll not only see wonderful mountain views but also visit four other attractions:
- Alibek Waterfall – the most beautiful waterfall in Dombay, formed in the middle of the last century from glacial waters.
- Turiye Lake – a beautiful mountain lake with turquoise water that appeared where a glacier once stood.
- Alibek Glacier – the most accessible glacier for tourists in the area.
- Climbers' Cemetery – climbers are buried here, or monuments are erected to climbers who died attempting peaks near Dombay.
The route goes through the Teberda Nature Reserve. If you complete the full route on foot, you'll need to cover about 16 kilometers round trip with an elevation gain of over 600 meters. However, a shortened route to just the waterfall, or to the waterfall and lake without climbing to the glacier, is also possible. Off-road vehicle tours are also available, which can nearly halve the walking part. More about the tourist route "Alibek Gorge".

You can also hire a jeep, which will save almost half the time, but the cost will be about 1000 rubles per person, or 4000 for a whole vehicle for 4-6 people.
The New Cable Car in Dombay

Don't rush to agree; first clarify which cable car they are offering – the old pendulum one or the new one – and then choose based on your preference and budget.
Baduk Lakes
The route to Baduk Lakes is the easiest and, probably, the most beautiful one-day hiking route that tourists can take while vacationing in Teberda or Dombay. These three mountain lakes are located at an altitude of 1980 meters. Interestingly, they appeared relatively recently, no more than 200 years ago, due to a landslide. The route is technically not difficult, but you'll have to climb quite a bit: on foot, you'll need to cover 3.8 kilometers with an elevation gain of just over 600 meters. Plan 6-12 hours for the hike. More about Baduk Lakes.

This is a car tourist route through the Teberda Nature Reserve, and you can drive it in your own car. The path goes along the Gonachkhir River gorge, offering beautiful views of the mountains and valley, and at one point, you can turn off the asphalt to a rest area. The route ends near Lake Tumany-Kol at an altitude of 1850 meters. Overall, you can't say it's the most beautiful route or the most picturesque lake, but if you couldn't see Turiye Lake or other mountain lakes in the region, you can go here. More about Lake Tumany-Kol and Gonachkhir Gorge.

Teberda Nature Reserve Zoo and Museum
This is an enclosure complex that differs from a regular zoo in that the animals are kept in spacious enclosures rather than cages. It contains deer, hares, ducks, geese, wild boars, raccoons, goats, bison, foxes, vultures, wolves, bears, jackals, a lynx (very old but wise), Caucasian tur, forest cat, raccoon dog, and others, including some from the Red Book. The variety isn't huge, but the conditions are satisfactory, making this place appealing to almost everyone, especially children. Some animals can be fed and even petted. More about the Teberda Zoo.

Dzhamagat Narzan Springs and Gorge
These are natural sources of cold mineral water in the Dzhamagat Gorge. A tourist route through the Teberda Nature Reserve has been established to reach them, with the narzan springs being the final point. However, the route is interesting not only for them but also for the mountain river and the magnificent views of the mountains that open up. You can complete it entirely on foot (8 kilometers from the center of Teberda), drive your own car, or take a jeep tour. More about the Dzhamagat Narzan Springs.

From Teberda, you can walk the route, which takes about 3 hours one way.
Shoaninsky Temple
The Shoaninsky Temple was built at the end of the 10th century, and there is a theory (unconfirmed) that it is the oldest Christian church in Russia. However, if you consider the construction period, it is believed that the Shoaninsky Temple appeared in the late 10th to early 11th centuries, which is later than the Zelenchuk churches in Nizhny Arkhyz and even the Sentinsky Temple. Today, you can visit it as a historical site and examine it in detail. Nearby are also the ruins of other ancient buildings, as the slope of the hill on which it stands was once densely built up and populated. More about the Shoaninsky Temple.
Practical Information
🕐 Opening Hours: open during daylight hours.
💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: free, donations are welcome.
🚶 How to Get There: The temple is located near Karachaevsk, next to the village named after Kosta Khetagurov (temple on the map). It is 75 kilometers from Dombay and 55 kilometers from Teberda. The easiest way to get here is on tours offered from Dombay, but you can also stop by the temple in your own car on the way to the resorts, as it is located near the only main road leading to them. The temple is on a hill, and a rough gravel road leads to it, which, however, can be driven in any passenger car in dry weather. There are signs on the road. Then you'll need to walk a short distance up the slope and stone stairs.
Sofia Waterfalls
Sofia Waterfalls are one of the main natural attractions of Arkhyz. The powerful cascade, reaching up to 100 meters high, is fed by melting glacier water, so even in the heat, the water remains ice-cold. Entry is free, and you can get there in various ways: from a group jeep tour (from 2000 rubles per person) to an independent trip in your own off-road vehicle. The last 2 km to the waterfall must be covered on foot in any case (30–60 minutes, 150 m elevation gain). Based on our experience, the route is accessible to most healthy people but requires comfortable shoes and time — budget 4–5 hours for the whole trip. More about Sofia Waterfalls and how to visit them.

Sofia Lakes
Sofia Lakes are the gem of Arkhyz's mountainous part. The three lakes (Bolshoye, Maloye, and Severnoye) are located at an altitude of 2820 meters, surrounded by cliffs and glaciers. On the way, you'll see waterfalls and several other picturesque lakes: Aimatly Dzhagaldy, Sapozhok, Zapyataya. The route requires good physical fitness: the length is 3.8 to 6 km one way with an elevation gain of 900–1200 meters. Based on our experience, the optimal option is to ascend from Glacier Farm (3.8 km) and descend to Syrzavod Glade (4.3 km) to avoid the steepest section. Entry is free, the season is July–August. More about Sofia Lakes and how to visit them.

Bottomless Lake (Karst Sinkhole)
Bottomless Lake (karst sinkhole) is located at an altitude of 2320 meters — the most accessible mountain lake in the Arkhyz area. Most of the road from Romantik settlement is paved; the last 4 km are a dirt road with steep climbs where it's better not to risk taking a regular car. You can leave your car at the parking area where the pavement ends and walk: about 2 km with a 200-meter elevation gain, taking 1.5–2 hours one way. Entry is free, the water is not very cold — you can swim. This is an ideal option for a first independent introduction to the mountains: it requires no special preparation, and the views are stunning. More about Bottomless Lake and how to visit it.
Practical Information
🕐 Opening Hours: 24/7, better to go in the morning.
💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: free.
🚶 How to Get There: The lake is located 21 km from Arkhyz (on the map). Seven-Color Lake and Dukka Lakes
Seven-Color Lake is the crown jewel among the high-mountain lakes of Arkhyz, part of the Dukka Lakes system. The water here changes shades from turquoise to emerald depending on the light. The routes split into two directions: to the lakes of Malaya Dukka (Rybka, Arkasarskoye, and Skazka Kavkaza lakes, 5.6–7 km one way) and to Bolshaya Dukka, where Seven-Color Lake is located (8.5 km). Entry is free; the road to the trailhead is accessible by high-clearance vehicle (the last 2 km is a rough dirt road; you can leave your car before the bridge). Based on our experience, the routes are suitable for a day hike but require good physical fitness and trekking shoes. More about Seven-Color Lake and the Dukka Lakes and how to visit them.

Lake of Love
The Lake of Love is one of the main attractions of Arkhyz, famous for its heart shape, which can only be seen from a bird's-eye view. The route starts at the Teberda Nature Reserve checkpoint, with a round-trip distance of 15 km and an elevation gain of over 900 meters. Along the way, you'll enjoy scenic views of the valley and mountain ranges, and at the finish — icy water and alpine meadows. Based on our experience, the hike requires good physical fitness and a full day, but the experience is worth it. If you have energy left, you can continue to the secluded Belkau-Kyol Lake (another 2.5 km). Entry to the trail is 200 rubles. More about Lake of Love and how to visit it.

From there, it's 7.5 km on foot or by horseback to the lake (on the map).
Alanian Settlement
It is believed that many historical monuments can be seen in the vicinity of Arkhyz — ruins from the period of the ancient Alanian kingdom. But the only developed place where you can get acquainted with the heritage of that era is the open-air museum, the Nizhne-Arkhyz Historical-Architectural Archaeological Complex, or simply the Alanian Settlement. It is supposedly located on the site of the ancient capital of the Alanian state — the city of Maas. It covers a large area, so it's better to move around by car or at least by bicycle. Currently, there are three ancient temples (one of them is active), a statue of a Turkic warrior, and a stone circle that supposedly served as a solar calendar. More about the Alanian Settlement in Arkhyz.
Practical Information
🕐 Opening Hours: from 9:00 to 18:00, Monday is a day off.
💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: entry to the archaeological park is 100 rubles, preschool and school-age children, age pensioners, and other concessionary categories are free. Car entry is currently free, only visitors are charged.
🚶 How to Get There: The archaeological park is located in the village of Nizhny Arkhyz, 25 kilometers from Arkhyz (Alanian Settlement on the map). It's best to get here by your own transport, taxi, or on a tour. To enter the area, you first need to pass through the barrier to the village. To do this, at the checkpoint you must present documents to be recorded in the log. A few dozen meters after the barrier, you'll find the entrance to the archaeological complex itself, where you need to purchase a ticket, and then drive further within the territory. You can also take any bus from Arkhyz.
Miraculous Image of Christ on the Rock
This is an icon depicting Jesus, created on a rock near Nizhny Arkhyz. It was discovered in 1999 and has since been considered sacred. A church was even built nearby for its veneration, and thousands of believers flock here every year. However, historians and researchers believe that the image on the rock was created by humans in the 9th-11th centuries, and some even propose a theory about the modern origin of the face. Be that as it may, this place is interesting and worth visiting. More about the Miraculous Image of Christ on the Rock.
Practical Information
🕐 Opening Hours: during daylight hours.
💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: free.
🚶 How to Get There: The image is on a rock near Nizhny Arkhyz, 25 kilometers from Arkhyz (image on the map). It's best to get here by your own transport or taxi; there is a spacious parking lot. You can also take any bus from Arkhyz.
Zelenchukskaya Observatory
This is the largest operating observatory in Russia and one of the most significant in the world. It was founded in the USSR in 1966, for which the largest optical telescope in the world at the time (with a 6-meter mirror diameter, now the second largest) and a radio telescope with a 600-meter antenna were built. Today, any tourist can visit the observatory on a guided tour. There is also a special night tour with stargazing through a CELESTRON telescope with a 280mm objective lens and 660x magnification. The cost of such a tour for 10 people is 5000 rubles. More about the Zelenchukskaya Observatory.
Practical Information
🕐 Opening Hours: Tours are only conducted when groups of at least 10 people are formed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 09:00 to 15:00.
💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: Cost of a general tour is 200 rubles for adults, 100 rubles for children.
🚶 How to Get There: The observatory is located in the village of Nizhny Arkhyz, 25 kilometers from Arkhyz (Zelenchukskaya Observatory on the map). It's best to get there by your own transport, taxi, or on a tour. Public transport is not possible.
Arkhyz Cable Cars
There are no ski lifts in the village of Arkhyz itself; they are all located in the Romantik settlement and on Lunaya Polyana, 10 kilometers away. This is where skiing enthusiasts spend most of their time, but those who don't ski will also find the cable cars interesting. Some of the cable cars operate in excursion mode during the summer. The cable cars lead to the peaks and slopes of the surrounding mountains, reaching heights of up to 3050 meters (Orbita) and Apollon (2840 meters). From there, you get stunning views of mountain peaks, some covered with glaciers. If you wish, you can walk along the trails or ski runs, reach mountain streams, or walk to Mount Smirnov (from the "Severnoye Siyanie" station). In short, it's all interesting and even exciting, but there's one downside – the cost of excursion tickets is quite high. The good thing is that by purchasing one "sightseeing" ticket, you can ride all the cable cars that are operating at the resort at that time, not just individual lifts or sections.
Practical Information
🕐 Opening Hours: The excursion (sightseeing) cable cars operate in summer from 09:00 to 16:30, but hours may change, so check locally. In winter, the schedule is different, usually from 08:00 to 15:30.
💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: Excursion (sightseeing) tickets come in several types: standard ones for ascent and descent on all lifts, and combined tickets (including the rope park, guide services, go-karting at the bottom). The minimum cost is 2800 rubles, children aged 6-17 – 1700 rubles. You can buy them at the cable car ticket offices; advance purchase is not required. In the winter season, it's more advantageous to purchase multi-use SkiPass tickets. For more details about the lifts and trails for the ski season, see the resort's website – arhyz-resort.ru
🚶 How to Get There: The cable car stations are located 10 kilometers from Arkhyz in the Romantik and Lunaya Polyana ski resorts (cable cars on the map). Buses from Lenin Street in Arkhyz to Romantik settlement run several times a day, or you can take a taxi for 700 rubles (see Arkhyz transport, how to get around).
