How to get to Gagra, transport

Gagra is the nearest resort city to the border with the Russian Federation, from the border crossing to it only 30 kilometers (Gagra on the map of Abkhazia). You can get here only by land from the territory of the Russian Federation (by car, bus or train) or Georgia (only by car or on foot), because planes do not fly to Abkhazia. It is best for Russian citizens to get to Gagra from the territory of the Russian Federation through the Psou checkpoint using an internal passport (without using a foreign one), since a note in the foreign passport about crossing the border of the Russian Federation-Abkhazia can bring serious problems when visiting Georgia (see more about this How to get to Abkhazia). If you want to get here through Georgia, entry is possible only with a foreign passport after obtaining the appropriate permits.

To Gagra by plane

Since there is no functioning civil airport in Abkhazia, it is possible to get here from the cities of the Russian Federation and other countries only through Adler airport (Sochi). There are many flights to Sochi airport from the regions of the Russian Federation, including favorable fares are offered with transfers at Moscow airports, but it is better to buy tickets in advance, because in high season (in summer) prices rise as the date of departure of the flight approaches.

How to get from the airport to Gagra

The airport is 10 kilometers from the border crossing and 40 kilometers from the city itself (airport on the map). To get to Gagra, you will have to cross the state border of the Russian Federation-Abkhazia through the PSOU checkpoint. You can do this route on buses or trains with a transfer, or order a non-stop tourist transfer (analogous to a taxi).

• By taxi

  By taxi from the airport you can get to the PSOU checkpoint, where you can independently cross the border and get to the desired resort on local routes or taxis departing from the other side.

  You can find a taxi from the airport immediately to Gagra, but the cost will be overpriced. You can also order a tourist transfer service, which in this case will be even cheaper than a taxi. The driver of the ordered car will meet you on arrival with a sign, and you will drive across the border directly to the desired place in the city. You can order a transfer through the search form:

• By bus from the airport

  From the airport you can get by bus number 173, to the PSOU checkpoint, cross the border on foot, and then take a minibus to Gagra. To do this, after the checkpoint on the Abkhazian side, you need to find the Station Square (Bus Station), from where buses depart to all popular resorts, including Gagra. But do not confuse this site with the parking lot after the Russian checkpoint: first you pass the control on the side of the Russian Federation, then you still need to go to the next checkpoint on the Abkhaz side, and only after it there will be a bus station. Minibuses to Gagra run from 7:00 to about 21:00, depart for filling approximately every 20-30 minutes. The fare is 100 rubles.

• By train from the airport

  Attention! The movement of electric trains along the route is suspended. Check the renewal information in the schedule.

  From the airport you can take a train or train to Gagra with a transfer, but the trip will take almost the whole day. First, from the airport you need to get to the railway station Adler by train "Lastochka" (46 USD), or buses # 105, 105C, 131, 535 (30-60 minutes on the way). By train to Gagra can be reached in the summer from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Belgorod, Samara. Gagra by bus

From the regions of Russia in the summer, bus tours to Gagra are offered. They are sold by carriers or organized by tour operators. Travel by bus is a little cheaper than by train, but in terms of convenience and time is much inferior, so we recommend using this option only as a last resort.

Also from the southern regions of the Russian Federation, from Moscow, and some regions of central Russia, you can get to Gagra by international bus.

Local city buses run from the cities of Greater Sochi to the border with Abkhazia (PSOU checkpoint) :

Buses reach the border checkpoint or stop near it, you can get there on foot. After crossing the border on the other side there is a parking lot of local taxis, on which you can get to Gagra. They are poisoned every 20-30 minutes, cost from 100 rubles from 07:00 to 21:00.

In Gagra, all buses pass through the city on the main road Demerdzhipa Street and continue on to other resorts, and some finish the route near the main market at the intersection of Sayat Nova Street and Abazgaa Street (stop on the map), or stop at the closed continent shopping center on Demerdzhipa Street (stop on map).

Gagra by car

You can get to Gagra by car from the Russian Federation only through the PSOU checkpoint, which is located on the border with the Russian Federation (PSOU checkpoint on the map) in the Krasnodar Territory, Sochi, Adler district, Veseloe settlement. The road to the border runs along the Black Sea coast through the cities of Greater Sochi, and this is the only way here. If you have never been to Sochi, then keep in mind that the section from Dzhubga to the checkpoint is a very difficult mountain winding road. Its length is 200 kilometers, but you can drive it in 5-6 hours with good weather and a free highway. Gasoline on this site is consumed decently. After passing the border at the checkpoint to the city will drive only 30 kilometers on a flat good road.

Transport in Gagra, what to move around the city

A shuttle bus runs along the main road between old and New Gagra. The route starts from the market in New Gagra, passes along the main street of Demerdzhip and Vladislav Ardzinba Avenue, and then goes to the E60 highway, which passes through old Gagra. Minibuses are sent by occupancy (every 15-20 minutes), the fare costs 25 rubles.

It is much more convenient to move around the city by taxi, but it is better to use the order by phone, and not "bombed" on the street, because their prices are higher. A company taxi by phone carries passengers on the counter: boarding from 100 rubles, Plus from 15 rubles for each kilometer. For example, a trip between districts will cost from 150 rubles.

If you prefer complete freedom of movement and independence, in Gagra you can find a bicycle or scooter for rent. The cost of renting a bicycle from 100 rubles, a scooter from 500 rubles per hour or 1500 rubles per day.
