Here are the main things you need to know about customs rules in Abkhazia:
- When you enter Abkhazia, you cross customs twice: upon leaving Russia, and then upon entering Abkhazia, meaning you must comply with the customs rules of both Russia and Abkhazia. The same applies in the opposite direction.
- When you return from Abkhazia to Russia, it doesn't matter to customs officers what mode of transport you're using: plane, car, train, or airplane. Duty-free limits and bans on exporting alcohol or honey in non-factory packaging and everything else apply regardless of the method of departure and transport into Russia.
- How strictly do they check at customs, and do they check everyone? No, they don't check everyone, but selectively, as on any other border. In most cases, they are lenient towards tourists and turn a blind eye to minor violations or don't inspect them at all, but this isn't always the case – it's luck of the draw.
- How much gasoline/diesel can you bring into Abkhazia? You can carry as much as you want in the fuel tank, but for export from Russia, there's a limit of no more than 10 liters of fuel in a canister/gas cylinder, and this is enforced quite strictly. So if you have a large canister in the trunk, be prepared for questions when leaving on the Russian side.
- How much homemade wine or chacha can you export from Abkhazia? Officially none, since importing alcoholic beverages without factory packaging into Russia is prohibited, and from Abkhazia also without excise stamps within the customs union. In practice, customs officers may overlook such minor violations by tourists, but again, it's luck of the draw.
- How much honey can you export from Abkhazia? You can only import into Russia from Abkhazia in factory packaging and no more than 5 kilograms, including other products of plant origin. That is, you cannot bring homemade honey in a jar. However, again, in practice, customs officers may overlook such minor violations by tourists, but it's luck of the draw.
- Can you import electronic cigarettes and vapes? Since 2024, Abkhazia has imposed a complete ban on the import, sale, and advertising of electronic cigarettes and other vapes. Violation carries a fine, and attempting to import them may even result in denial of entry.
- What happens if customs finds violations with me? If it's a minor violation, such as an extra bottle of wine over the limit, it may simply be confiscated and you may get a warning or a 2,000 ruble fine for non-compliance. If you're caught with serious contraband, the penalty can go up to criminal liability.
Now for more details:
Customs control when entering/leaving Abkhazia is organized the same way as in any other country, based on the two-corridor principle: green corridor – nothing to declare, red corridor – need to declare. So if you have items subject to declaration, you must fill out a customs declaration and present them when going through customs.

If a customs officer suspects that you are importing a large volume of goods for commercial purposes (for sale, for example), you may be charged with smuggling. In practice, customs officers pay almost no attention to tourists. Nevertheless, the following restrictions apply for duty-free import:
- Alcoholic beverages – no more than 3 liters of alcohol or 5 liters of beer.

Import of Currency into Abkhazia
Restrictions on the amount of money you can carry from Russia to Abkhazia are dictated by Russian customs. Tourists can freely carry rubles or any other currency, but if you are exporting cash in rubles or any currency equivalent to more than 10,000 US dollars from Russia, you must declare it. This condition applies to all persons, including minors, so a family of two adults and two children can export up to the equivalent of 40,000 US dollars without declaring. Please note again that this applies only to cash; you can carry any amount on a plastic card without including it in the customs declaration.
Traveling to Abkhazia with Animals
To bring a pet across the border, you need to obtain an international pet passport. You also need a veterinary certificate with marks of rabies vaccinations and confirmation that the pet is healthy. In practice, these documents are rarely and selectively checked at the border, but if they decide to check and you don't have them, you may not be allowed through.
