All resorts of Abkhazia: complete overview

Sukhum: a capital resort with the best promenade and infrastructure

Makhadzhirs and Dioscuri Embankment, Sukhum
Embankment in Sukhum

– beach holiday
– sights and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability
– transport accessibility

Sukhum (Sukhum, also Sukhumi) is a resort city and the capital of Abkhazia. By Russian standards, it's a small city, but it's the largest city in the country, the political and cultural capital. It's located on the Black Sea coast in the central part of the country, 115 kilometers from the border with Russia (Sukhum on the map of Abkhazia).

There's a belief that beyond New Athos, there's no tourist life in Abkhazia. Moreover, this opinion is sometimes pushed by the Abkhazians themselves who work in tourism. But in reality, Sukhum is one of the most developed and comfortable cities for tourists. There's a cozy, clean city center, in our opinion the cleanest place in the country. The Sukhum embankment, unlike embankments in other resorts, doesn't look half-destroyed; it has lots of entertainment and all sorts of tourist infrastructure. Sukhum can also boast decent beaches, both within the city limits and excellent beaches on the outskirts. Like everywhere in Abkhazia, the beaches are mostly pebbly, but there are also mixed sand-and-pebble ones.

The city's infrastructure is also excellently developed compared to other resorts in the country. There are shops, restaurants, cafes, canteens, pharmacies, public transport – in short, everything you need for daily life. Sukhumi has two theaters, the only ones in the whole country. Excursions are sold specifically for tourists, and there are water and kids' activities on the beaches. In the evenings, you can stroll along the embankment or through one of the parks.

Gagra: the most popular resort in Abkhazia – pros and cons (water park, proximity to Ritsa)

Gagra, Abkhazia
Beach in Gagra

– beach holiday
– sights and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability
– transport accessibility

Gagra (Gagra, Gagry) is the second most populous city in Abkhazia after the capital, and the most popular resort in the country. The city's population is quite modest by Russian standards, only 12 thousand people. It's the closest resort city to the border with Russia, just 25 kilometers from the border crossing (Gagra on the map of Abkhazia).

Many tourists think that Gagra has the best beaches, the cleanest sea, and that it's the greenest and most beautiful resort in Abkhazia. Whether that's actually true is a big question, but nevertheless, it's also the most expensive resort in Abkhazia due to its proximity to the border and the large flow of tourists from Russia.

A holiday in Gagra, like in all of Abkhazia, is a beach holiday. The beaches here are sand-and-pebble (mostly pebbly) and very spacious. Even at the peak of the season, despite its popularity, there's enough room for everyone on the shore. Another plus of Gagra is that it's the most developed resort in Abkhazia. There are restaurants, bars, discos, lots of water activities on the beach, even some kids' entertainment, and the only water park in the country. Conveniently, nearby is Abkhazia's most visited attraction – Ritsa National Park and Lake Ritsa.

But there's another side to a holiday in Gagra: the level of upkeep is lower than in Pitsunda, and trash is common, especially on the outskirts, and even on the beach. There are no pedestrian paths or shoulders, or they are very narrow, and even just walking around town to the beach or shops is dangerous and uncomfortable due to the reckless driving of local drivers. Order has been somewhat restored and cleanliness maintained in the very center of town around the square and Independence Memorial, but step away a couple of hundred meters, and the situation changes dramatically.

Pitsunda: a cozy resort with a pine forest and crystal-clear water

Pitsunda, Abkhazia
Beach in Pitsunda

– beach holiday
– sights and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability
– transport accessibility

Pitsunda (Pitsunda) is a resort town on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia in the Gagra district, 90 kilometers from the capital Sukhum, and 60 kilometers from the Psou checkpoint on the border with Russia (Pitsunda on the map of Abkhazia). What sets Pitsunda apart from all other resorts in Abkhazia is that it's located away from the country's main highway, Sukhumske Shosse, which makes the holiday here one of the best on the coast.

Pitsunda can confidently be called the coziest place for a holiday in Abkhazia. This applies to Pitsunda itself, as well as the nearby villages and resorts traditionally considered part of Pitsunda. In our opinion (the site's authors), this is the only place in Abkhazia where you truly feel the spirit and coziness of a resort town: clean and well-kept, with developed tourist infrastructure. Of course, there's plenty of dilapidation here too, but at least it's not on the same scale as, say, in Gagra, and you can tell that some kind of order is being restored.

Almost the entire coast here has pebble and fine-pebble beaches. The water is very clear, and the depth and entry into the water are convenient, not too steep. On land, the conditions are also wonderful: the entire coast is surrounded by greenery, beautiful slender cypresses, and the famous Pitsunda pine forest.

As for infrastructure, all the conditions for a holiday are present, but you shouldn't expect Pitsunda to be at a world-class or even Russian-level resort. There are many hotels and sanatoriums, guest houses, and private accommodation, but it's fair to say that the price doesn't always match the quality.

New Athos: Is it worth going for the beach or just for a sightseeing trip?

New Athos Monastery in New Athos
St. Panteleimon's Cathedral

– beach holiday
– sights and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability
– transport accessibility

New Athos is a small town in Abkhazia on the Black Sea coast. It's located almost in the center of the Abkhazian coast, 80 kilometers from the border with Russia (New Athos on the map of Abkhazia). Despite its small size and population (fewer than 2,000 people live there), New Athos is among the most popular resorts in Abkhazia.

New Athos isn't often chosen as the main place for a holiday, as it's better known as a sightseeing spot visited from other, larger resort cities. But that doesn't mean you can't spend your entire vacation here. In our opinion (the site's authors), it's actually one of the best places for a holiday in Abkhazia because you can combine a beach holiday with trips to the sights. The center has a very beautiful and well-kept park, and there are activities, including for children. There are no adult entertainment venues, nightclubs, or bars here. Frankly, there's no nightlife infrastructure, but everything needed for daytime relaxation is there: a canteen, several cafes and kebab shops, a restaurant, a pizzeria, shops and a market, and excursion sales to all corners of Abkhazia.

The only weak point of New Athos is its beaches. Here, like everywhere in Abkhazia, they are pebbly, long, and the water is clean. But the infrastructure is poorly developed, and there are few activities. The embankment here is conditional, left over from Soviet times and ruined, but very beautiful when plants are blooming. It's also inconvenient that in the center, the road runs right along the beach; there's no first line, and to get to the sea, you have to cross the country's main highway each time.

Gudauta: a quiet getaway without crowds – beach and prices

Gudauta
Beach in Gudauta

– beach holiday
– sights and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability
– transport accessibility

Gudauta (Gudauta) is a small resort town on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia, the administrative center of the Gudauta district (Gudauta on the map of Abkhazia). The city's population is just over 8,000 people.

Gudauta is a traditional, quiet Black Sea beach resort. Like most other small resort villages in Abkhazia, it's in a state of neglect and not particularly beautiful: roads and sidewalks are broken, the city park is abandoned, buildings are half-ruined. But a holiday in Gudauta has its pluses too. First of all, the atmosphere here is calm, almost rural, and there are very few vacationers even at the height of the season. So if you don't need entertainment, excursions, comfortable hotel accommodations, or developed tourist infrastructure – Gudauta might suit you.

The beach in Gudauta is decent and also has its pros. As mentioned, there are very few tourists on it, but there are umbrellas, sun loungers, changing cabins, several cafes along the shoreline, and a counter-bar on the beach itself. The beach is sand-and-pebble: pebbles near and under the water; sand further from the shore, coarse and gray. Another good thing is that the beach is hardly disfigured by rusty concrete structures and breakwaters, as on other resorts in Abkhazia. There are no permanent activities, only at the height of the season you might find banana boat rides, parasailing, and jet ski rentals.

The tourist infrastructure in the town itself is very poorly developed. In fact, besides a couple dozen accommodation options and a few cafes, there's nothing else touristy here. There are no activities other than the beach either.

Tsandrypsh: a resort near the border – pros and cons (reviews)

Beach in Tsandrypsh
Beach in Tsandrypsh

– beach holiday
– sights and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability
– transport accessibility

Tsandrypsh village (also Tsandrypsh or Gantiadi) is a village in Abkhazia, the resort closest to the Russian border, with its center just 5 kilometers from the Psou checkpoint (Tsandrypsh on the map of Abkhazia).

Tsandrypsh is the most tourist-oriented resort village in Abkhazia. Of course, it can't be compared to the cities of Gagra, Sukhum, Pitsunda, or New Athos, but when it comes to quiet resort villages, it's the most touristy one. The proximity to the Russian border does its job, and you can even feel a bit of a resort atmosphere here: tourists stroll the streets, vacation goods are sold, and there are activities on the beaches. However, like all other places in Abkhazia, the village is neglected and half-ruined: nothing has been done for many years, nothing is repaired, and it's falling into disrepair.

The beach line stretches for almost 8 kilometers. It's not interrupted by concrete breakwaters or fences and is quite wide. The water is clean, and there are almost no people even at the peak of the season (July and August). The beach is pebbly, with large and very large stones. Coarse gray sand is only found about ten meters from the water. Umbrellas and sun loungers are available, and sometimes activities like jet ski rentals, banana boat rides, and parasailing appear.

The village itself has shops, a market with fruits, vegetables, and meat, stalls with tourist goods, excursion sales, cafes and kebab shops, and even some simple kids' entertainment like shooting ranges, trampolines, and inflatable slides.

Zolotoy Bereg: sandy beaches and sanatorium ruins – complete overview

Zolotoy Bereg village, Abkhazia
Holiday in Zolotoy Bereg village

– beach holiday
– sights and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability
– transport accessibility

Zolotoy Bereg is a small resort village on the coast of Abkhazia, located between the cities of Pitsunda and Gudauta, 60 kilometers from the Psou checkpoint on the border with Russia (Zolotoy Bereg on the map of Abkhazia). However, as far as we know, the village of Zolotoy Bereg doesn't officially exist, and administratively, this area and beach are part of the village of Mgudzyrkhua in the Gudauta district.

Zolotoy Bereg was once a popular and developed Soviet resort with luxurious, beautiful sanatoriums with their own grounds and developed infrastructure for peaceful therapeutic and preventive holidays. But all that is in the past, and today only the ruins of abandoned sanatoriums remain of that former luxury. Therefore, Zolotoy Bereg is hard to call a full-fledged developed resort now, since besides a few sanatoriums, hotels, private accommodation, and a couple of cafes, there's nothing touristy here. However, the beach at Zolotoy Bereg is very decent. It stretches for at least two kilometers, doesn't end at the village outskirts, and you can walk further along the shore. There are very few vacationers here even at the peak of the season. The shore is mostly pebbles, but if you walk further along the shore towards Pitsunda, you can find sandy beaches with yellow sand. The water is clean, but there's one peculiarity: its clarity greatly depends on the weather, because after rains, the Mchishta and Ambara rivers carry silt and clay into the sea. But usually, this clears up in a day or two, and the water becomes clear and pleasant for swimming again.

Ochamchira: the wild south of Abkhazia – is it worth going for deserted beaches?

Ochamchira
Ochamchira

– beach holiday
– sights and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability
– transport accessibility

Ochamchira (Ochamchyra) is a city in the south of Abkhazia on the Black Sea coast. It's the southernmost and farthest resort from the border with Russia, 170 kilometers from the Psou checkpoint, and 55 kilometers from Sukhum (Ochamchira on the map of Abkhazia).

Ochamchira is a beach resort, but with a big caveat. Yes, the city is on the coast and indeed has long beaches and a clean sea, but it's hard to call this place a resort yet. Ochamchira suffered greatly during the Georgian-Abkhazian war and still hasn't recovered. There's no tourist infrastructure here except for a dozen private guest houses and apartments, no entertainment, and no sights. Some entertainment and sights left from the Soviet period are destroyed or non-operational. In the city, you can find a couple of cafes, shops, a market, pharmacies, a bank, and other urban infrastructure of a small town.

The resort's pros: lack of tourists, a long, deserted beach, and very clean water. The beach stretches along the entire city and beyond. It's completely pebbly, and like the city, it's in a neglected state: concrete breakwaters and embankment reinforcements are destroyed, rebar sticks out. The shore is cleaned only in the city center, but a little further away you might come across piles of trash.
