Tides on Phu Quoc: How to Properly Plan Your Beach Vacation

Article and Section Navigation

Remember that moment when you imagined the perfect beach day in Phu Quoc: turquoise sea, white sand, and you stepping into the warm water... And upon arrival, it turns out there's no sea? Familiar? Tides on Phu Quoc are not a myth, but a reality that can ruin your vacation if you don't know how to prepare for it.

In this guide, we will not only show you the tide schedule for 2026 but also explain from our own experience how to "read" these schedules, which beaches are best for swimming at any time of day, and debunk the main myth that circulates on travel forums.

What are Tides on Phu Quoc

Let's immediately address the main misconception often found in blogs, like: "In Phu Quoc, mornings are low tide, evenings are high tide". This is not true! The timing of tides depends on many astronomical factors and constantly changes. It is determined by special tables, not by the time of day.

During our stay on the island, we saw low tides at 7 AM, 2 PM, and 6 PM. So the first rule: don't plan your beach vacation by the time of day, check the current schedule.

How to read this schedule? It's simple:

  • Vertical axis — water level. The top line — maximum level (high water), the bottom — minimum (low water).
  • Horizontal axis — time of day and dates.
  • Curved line — shows how the water level changes over time. When the line goes up — the tide is starting, when it goes down — the ebb tide.

How Tides Affect Different Beaches of Phu Quoc

This is where it gets interesting. It turns out that low tides affect beaches differently depending on their location! We verified this ourselves by traveling all over the island.

  • West Coast Beaches (Long Beach, Sonasea, Ong Lang)

These are the most popular tourist beaches, and everything is fine with the tides here. Yes, during low tide the water recedes 20-50 meters, but you can still swim! The gentle sandy entry remains, you just need to walk a bit further.

We vacationed at Long Beach and swam calmly during low tides — the water was waist-deep just 10 meters from the shore. Moreover, low tides are a great time for long barefoot walks on the hard, wet sand.

  • East Coast Beaches (Bai Sao, Ham Ninh)

The situation here is completely different. We specifically went to the east coast to see the famous Bai Sao and encountered low tide. The result: swimming is impossible! The water recedes for hundreds of meters, exposing the muddy bottom with seaweed.

If you're staying on the east coast, be sure to plan your swimming according to the tide schedule. Otherwise, your beach vacation will turn into observing the exposed seabed.

  • Northern Beaches (Starfish Beach, Rach Vem)

Low tides are also very noticeable on these beaches. For example, at Starfish Beach during low tide, you can walk to places where sea stars usually swim. This is both a plus (unique photos) and a minus (swimming is difficult).

Our Warning:

Do not rent accommodation on the east coast of Phu Quoc if your main priority is a beach vacation with swimming at any time. We saw many disappointed tourists who didn't check this nuance in advance. Choose the west coast — there are no problems with low tides there.

How to Plan Your Vacation Considering Tides

  1. Check the tide schedule in the morning for the current day.
  2. Plan beach activities for high tide — especially if you want to snorkel or just comfortably enter the water.
  3. Plan excursions, shopping, restaurant visits or spa treatments for low tide. For example, the perfect time to visit Phu Quoc attractions is exactly when it's low tide at the beach.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tides on Phu Quoc

  • Can you swim during low tide?

On the west coast — yes! On the east coast — practically no. Always check which coast your beach is on.

The schedule for today and the next six months is above.

Main Conclusions

Summarizing our experience, let's formulate simple rules:

  • Don't be afraid of low tides — on main tourist beaches they don't interfere with vacation
  • Choose a hotel on the west coast — there are no problems with swimming at any time
  • Plan your day according to the schedule — high tide for swimming, low tide for excursions
  • Don't believe the myths — low tides occur at different times of day, not just in the morning

Tides are not a problem, but a feature of Phu Quoc. If you know how to prepare for them, they won't ruin your vacation, and might even make it more interesting!
