Phu Quoc fish sauce factories are not exactly attractions, but this is one of the places where you can get acquainted with the process of cooking the famous Vietnamese fish sauce Nyok Mam. This sauce is known not only in Vietnam, but also in many countries of the world.
In general, there are several similar factories on the island, as well as sauce producers. They are all located within the city of Duong Duong and in the center of the island, we visited at least three of them. The most famous and visited is the Khai Hoan factory, it has existed since 1975. There are also younger productions, but there is practically no difference between them for tourists.
All factories sell their products through networks and branded stores for tourists, and demonstration sites of production are also located here. Usually visitors are brought here during the excursion along with pepper plantations and pearl farm (actually a shop). But, of course, you need to understand that all this is a purely commercial event, the purpose of which is not to show you something interesting, but to offer you something to buy. During the visit, they conduct a short tour of the production (get ready for a suffocating unpleasant smell here), and then, of course, they will take you to the trading floor. It is not necessary to buy sauce there, but be prepared for the fact that local consultants may put a lot of pressure on you.
English-speaking consultants work in stores, so you will receive a minimum of information about the product. They will also help in the purchase and packaging of the product you like for further transportation. But to be honest, the price of branded products at all the factories where we were, seemed to us too high, although the taste and smell of the sauce here is really great.
Also, if you wish, you can come here on your own, for example, if you ride around the island on a rented motorbike. Then you will be able to visit both the store and the production premises or warehouse on your own, but these conditional excursions are not conducted for individual tourists. To find the entrance to the production, just ask the consultants or the security guard at the store, they will be happy to show you where you can go and where you can't.
If you decide to buy fish sauce, but you don't know which one to take, we won't recommend any specific one, because everyone's tastes are different. But when buying, pay attention to the number of "fortress" on the bottles, for example, 18, 30, 40, 43, 45, 60. These numbers mean the protein content in the product, and the higher, the more and more intense the taste and the more expensive and cooler the sauce. But in principle, I will tell you all this on the tour and help you with the choice. Just do not forget that you can only carry the sauce in your luggage, do not take it in your hand luggage.
