Description and is it worth a visit
One of the largest salt production facilities in Vietnam is located near Nha Trang. Yes, salt is produced here, and not mined, as in our country. It is made on salt fields that stretch along the coast and represent huge areas divided into separate parts, somewhat resembling rice fields. It is quite interesting to observe this process (of course, when others are working ☺), and here you can take very beautiful photos, however, certain conditions are needed for this. Now we'll tell you about everything:
Salt production is not a complicated process, but it is very time–consuming and poorly paid. First, the fields are flooded with seawater and wait a few days until it evaporates. When a white salt coating of salt crystals forms on the surface, it is raked into heaps and taken to the acceptance point.
A prerequisite for salt extraction is the hot Vietnamese sun, so the main period of salt extraction falls on the high season, which begins from February to July). The rest of the time the fields are empty, in some places you can see mountains of salt, but they will be covered with a protective film.
There are no special excursions here, and the fields are usually visited on their own by rented transport. We will not recommend them for mandatory inspection, because they are located far from the center of Nha Trang, 50 kilometers away, you can only see them during the harvest season, not everywhere you can get close to the salt mountains, access to storage sites may be prohibited by security, but from afar you can really see everything.
🕐 Working hours
Around the clock. The salt harvest season is the time when you can see people at work and salt mountains in the fields, lasts from February to July, and depending on the established hot weather. The work is actively carried out early in the morning or in the evening, so if you want to take beautiful photos, it is advisable to arrive no later than 8 am or after 16 o'clock.
💵Entrance fee / ticket price
Free of charge.
🚶 How to get there
Salt fields occupy a vast area north of Nha Trang (salt fields in Nha Trang on the map). They start on the road towards Doc Let beach and stretch further along the coast for many kilometers. Many fields are located in the village of Hon Khoi.
Excursions are not carried here, at least we have not seen such options either in travel agencies or in online search engines. Unless you can find an individual excursion with a driver who will take you here, but it will be very expensive. Therefore, get ready for an independent trip to the salt fields on a rented motorbike or car.
Since this is not a tourist site, but actually a production site, you may not be allowed to go to the first field that comes to hand. In each case, you need to negotiate with the guards (we were allowed to enter one of the fields without any problems), or look for other fields, where it's easier to stop by, there are a lot of them. In extreme cases, you will be able to look at everything from the side of the asphalt road.
