Overview of ways: how to get from Nha Trang to Hoi An

The trip from Nha Trang to Hoi An is worth it – the old town is incredibly atmospheric

The distance between Nha Trang and Hoi An is about 500 kilometers. This is one of the popular tourist routes connecting two iconic Vietnamese resorts: the bustling beach Nha Trang and the cozy, history-filled Hoi An (see the route on the map). In our experience, the journey is not difficult but requires the right choice of transport depending on your budget, time, and desired comfort level.

Briefly about all options:

  • By plane: Fastest (1 hour flight + travel to airports). Price from 1.5 million dong. Optimal if time is more valuable than money.
  • By night train: Convenient, scenic, you can go to sleep in Nha Trang and wake up near Hoi An. Price for a sleeping berth from 700,000 dong.
  • By bus (direct or with transfer): The most budget-friendly way (from 400,000 dong). There are both direct services and options with a transfer in Da Nang.
  • By taxi or private transfer: Maximum comfort "door to door" for a group of 3-4 people. Price from 6-7 million dong per car.

We will break down each method in detail below, but to start, here is our recommendation:

Our choice for balance of price and comfort: If traveling for the first time and want impressions – get tickets for the night sleeper train (Sleeper Train). If need to be quick and hassle-free – fly to Da Nang. If budget is limited – take the direct sleeper bus.

The flight between cities takes about an hour

  2. Arrive at Da Nang Airport (DAD). The flight takes about 1 hour.
  3. From Da Nang Airport to Hoi An you need to take a taxi, transfer, or bus (another ~30-50 minutes, 25 km).

How to get from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An: The most convenient option is a taxi via Grab or Xanh SM apps. The trip will cost from 400,000 dong (about 15.19 USD). You can pre-order a transfer, then the driver will meet you with a sign. The budget option is to take city bus No. 16 to the final stop, then transfer to bus LK-02 to Hoi An. This will take 2-3 hours but will cost only 38,000 dong.

Keep in mind the total time: 1 hour to get to Nha Trang airport + 1.5-2 hours for check-in and waiting + 1 hour flight + 30-60 minutes to get from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An. In total, the "fast" flight will take half a day.

By train (the most scenic way)

This is what trains in Vietnam look like

Hoi An does not have its own railway station, so you need to go to Da Nang Railway Station.

  • Route and travel time

Trains depart from Nha Trang Railway Station to Da Nang. Travel time is from 9 to 11 hours. There are day and night trains. We strongly recommend getting a ticket for the night sleeper train (Sleeper Train). You board in the evening, sleep in your cabin or berth, and in the morning you're already in Da Nang. You save time and money on a hotel night.

  • Types of cars and prices

    Main types of accommodations:

    • Soft Sleeper: 4-berth compartment with air conditioning, door. The most comfortable option. Price from 1,100,000 dong (41.78 USD).
    • Hard Sleeper: 6 berths in an open compartment. Comfortable but less private. Price from 600,000 dong (22.79 USD).
    • Seat: Soft seat. For an 11-hour journey – not the best choice. Price from 500,000 dong.

In a sleeper car you can rest properly during the journey

How to get from Da Nang Railway Station to Hoi An: Taxi will take 30-40 minutes and cost from 400,000 dong. You can also take city bus No. 16 to the final stop and transfer to LK-02 to Hoi An (total ~1.5 hours and 30,000 dong).

Where to buy tickets: Better to buy in advance, especially in high season. You can check schedules and buy on the official website dsvn.vn (payment with Vietnamese and some foreign cards) or via aggregator 12go.asia (accepts all foreign cards except Russian cards).

Our advice: If you have never traveled by train in Vietnam, read our guide-instruction "All about trains in Vietnam". This will make it easier for you to prepare for the trip and understand the types of cars, seat classes, station layout and everything else.

By bus (the most economical way)

Modern buses run between cities 24/7

The cheapest, convenient and in its own way interesting way to travel. Buses in Vietnam are comfortable, especially those of major carriers. There are two main options:

1. Direct bus Nha Trang – Hoi An

This option is convenient because you don't need to think about transfers. Many tourist companies and some major carriers (e.g., The Sinh Tourist, Hanh Cafe) offer direct sleeper buses. They depart from the tourist area of Nha Trang and arrive in the center of Hoi An or its northern bus station.

  • Travel time: 10-12 hours.
  • Cost: From 600,000 to 800,000 dong (22.79 - 30.39 USD).
  • Where to buy: At any travel agency in Nha Trang, at hotel reception or online on 12go.asia.

2. With transfer in Da Nang (more frequent and cheaper)

This route is more popular and regular. You take a bus from Nha Trang to Da Nang, then transfer to local transport to Hoi An.

  • First stage (Nha Trang – Da Nang): Depart from Nha Trang North Bus Station. Travel time 9-10 hours. Sleeper bus by FUTA Bus Lines or others costs from 400,000 dong (15.19 USD). Arrival at Da Nang Central Bus Station.
  • Second stage (Da Nang – Hoi An): From the bus station by taxi (400,000 dong) or by buses No. 16 + LK-02 (30,000 dong).
In a sleeper bus you can stretch your legs and even sleep

Important about bus stations: The main bus station in Nha Trang was moved far from the center in 2024 (new southern bus station). You can get there by taxi. Some carriers (e.g., FUTA) provide free transfer from the hotel to the bus station – be sure to ask when buying the ticket!

Our advice: If you are not yet familiar with the system of sleeper, tourist, and intercity buses, read our guide-instruction "All about buses in Vietnam". We tell everything in detail and honestly about buying tickets, where to check schedules, which types of buses are more suitable for long trips.

By taxi or private transfer (the most comfortable way)

A taxi ride for such a distance is expensive, but very convenient for a family or group

If you're traveling in a group of 3-4 people, with children, or with a lot of luggage, this option may even be more cost-effective than flying. They pick you up right from your hotel in Nha Trang and bring you to your hotel in Hoi An.

  • By regular taxi (Grab, Xanh SM)

You can try to order via the app, but drivers rarely agree to such long trips by meter. Usually, a fixed price is negotiated. Estimated cost – from 6,000,000 dong (228 USD) and up per car.

  • By private transfer with driver

Best option. You can order online in advance on sites like Kiwitaxi or Intui.travel. Price is fixed, Russian-language support, they will meet you with a sign. Cost starts from 7,000,000 dong (266 USD) for a sedan for 3 passengers with luggage.

Pros: You stop where you want (e.g., for lunch or photos), travel in comfort, not dependent on schedule.

Tips and personal experience

When to choose which way?

  • With children: Plane or private transfer. A long journey by bus/train is an ordeal.
  • For backpackers and budget travelers: Direct night bus is your choice.
  • For romantics and photography lovers: Night train with morning arrival in Da Nang.

Our main recommendations:

  • Book in advance during high season: Especially for trains and popular bus departures. Seats sell out quickly.
  • Don't buy tickets at the first Russian-language agencies you come across: Prices there may be inflated 1.5-2 times. Compare with prices at the bus station or on 12go.asia.
  • Take warm clothes on the bus/train: Air conditioners often run at full blast. Blankets are provided, but your own socks and sweater won't hurt.
  • Plan to arrive in Hoi An during daylight: Especially if it's your first time. Finding your hotel in the dark among the labyrinth of old town alleys is quite a challenge.

Overall, the journey from Nha Trang to Hoi An is not just moving from point A to point B, but part of the adventure. In our opinion, whichever way you choose, you will get your own unique experience and many impressions. Hoi An is worth it! Have a good trip!
