Da Nang vs Hoi An: two gems of central Vietnam

If you're planning a trip to central Vietnam, you've probably faced the dilemma: Da Nang or Hoi An? These two resorts are separated by only 25 kilometers, but they offer such different experiences that choosing between them can define your impression of the entire vacation. We've been to both cities many times, watched how they've changed over the last 15 years, and in this guide we'll help you make an informed decision.

Da Nang is a modern metropolis and one of the country's best beach resorts with wide avenues, skyscrapers and developed infrastructure. Hoi An is a small historical open-air museum city, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the romantic atmosphere of ancient streets and silk lanterns. But behind this romance lies another reality: today Hoi An is often overcrowded with tourists.

There is no right or wrong choice — there is a choice that suits you. Let's figure out which vacation is closer to you: peaceful beach relaxation in Da Nang or immersion in the history and culture of Hoi An, despite the crowds of tourists.

Our opinion: We often recommend combining both places, especially if you have a week or more. You can stay in Da Nang for beach vacation and make day trips to Hoi An on your own or with excursions. Or vice versa — settle in a quiet beach area of Hoi An and go to Da Nang for modern entertainment and shopping. But if time is limited, you'll have to make a choice.

Comparison table: Da Nang and Hoi An in numbers and facts

Comparison of Da Nang and Hoi An by key parameters
Criterion Da Nang Hoi An Comment
Resort type Modern city-resort, metropolis Historical museum city (UNESCO) Different vacation philosophy
Atmosphere Dynamic, modern, urban Romantic, historical, but very touristy In the evening, Hoi An turns into a "tourist conveyor"
Beaches Best in the region: long, wide, clean, infrastructure nearby Good, but far from the center (4-5 km), less infrastructure In Da Nang, the beach is part of the city; in Hoi An, it's a separate trip
Main sights Marble Mountains, Dragon Bridge, Ba Na Hills (Golden Bridge), museums Old Town (UNESCO), single ticket for sights, craft workshops In Da Nang — nature and modernity; in Hoi An — history and culture
Shopping Large malls (Vincom, Lotte Mart), markets, electronics Tailor shops, souvenirs, custom clothing, paintings, but no large malls Hoi An — for unique items; Da Nang — for everything else
Food (average bill) From 60,000 dong (local cafes) to 500,000+ (seafood restaurants) From 80,000 dong (food courts) to 150,000+ (embankment restaurants) In Hoi An, prices in the center are higher, especially in the evening
Nightlife Bars, embankments, bridge light shows Walks with lanterns, night markets, riverside restaurants In Da Nang — modern; in Hoi An — atmospheric
Family-friendliness Excellent: sidewalks, parks, gentle beach entry More difficult: narrow streets, crowds, beach far away With small children, Da Nang is more comfortable
Transport accessibility Airport, railway station, bus station right in the city Get there via Da Nang (30-40 minutes by taxi) It's easier and often cheaper to fly directly to Da Nang

Atmosphere and type of vacation: bustling city vs romantic museum

This is where the main difference lies. Da Nang is a Vietnamese metropolis where life is bustling by its own rules. Wide streets with sidewalks (a rarity for Vietnam!), modern hotels, business centers and embankments for walks. This is a city that doesn't live on tourism alone. It's convenient, predictable and comfortable, especially for those who value urban amenities. In the evening you can watch amazing light shows on the bridges, especially the famous Dragon Bridge, which "breathes" fire on weekends.

Today's Da Nang is a modern city with high-rises right by the beach

Hoi An is a journey back in time. Yellow colonial facades, narrow streets, hundreds of silk lanterns that light up at dusk. The entire Old Town is a UNESCO site. However, we need to be honest: the quiet romance for which Hoi An was famous 15 years ago is now heavily diluted with mass tourism. In the evenings, dozens of buses bring tourists here from Da Nang, and finding a table at a restaurant on the embankment after 6 pm becomes a problem. The atmosphere becomes rather noisy and hectic.

Hoi An is a journey back in time

Our advice for Hoi An: To fully feel its magic, come early in the morning when the streets are still empty, or stay in the Old Town for several days to walk at different times. The evening beauty of the lanterns is worth it, but be prepared for crowds.

Beach vacation: urban comfort or secluded bays

If vacation for you is primarily about the beach, then Da Nang will be the unequivocally better choice. My Khe Beach stretches for many kilometers right within the city. These are wide sandy spaces with a gentle entrance to the water, sunbeds, umbrellas and lifeguards. You can stay in a hotel right on the first line and be on the sand in 5 minutes. In the low season (September-December) there can be waves for surfing, in the high season (March-August) — complete calm.

Urban My Khe beach

The situation in Hoi An is different. The historical center is located several kilometers from the coast. The nearest beaches (An Bang, Cua Dai) require 10-20 minutes by taxi or motorbike. They themselves are beautiful: sandy, with traditional round basket boats. But the infrastructure here is more modest, and if you stay in the center, a trip to the beach becomes a separate planned event, not a spontaneous "escape for a couple of hours".

Hoi An's beaches, such as An Bang, are beautiful but located away from the center
  • For pure beach vacation choose Da Nang.
  • For a combination of "history + beach" you can choose Hoi An, but it's better to stay in its beach area. Read more about this in our guide about Hoi An districts and beaches.

Sights and entertainment

Both resorts serve as excellent bases for exploring central Vietnam, but the set of "home" entertainment is different.

Da Nang: nature, modernity, and large-scale projects

Here, sights often require a full day or at least half:

  • Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn): a complex of five marble hills with caves, Buddhist sanctuaries and breathtaking views. Located on the way to Hoi An.
  • Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge: a mountain resort reached by one of the world's longest cable cars. The famous bridge, supported by two giant stone hands, is a must-see. Plan a full day for this.
  • Museum of Cham Sculpture: the best collection of artifacts from the ancient Champa kingdom.
  • Da Nang bridges: especially the Dragon Bridge (the dragon "breathes" fire on weekends at 9:00 PM) and the sail-shaped bridge.
Cham Museum is one of the most visited tourist places in Da Nang

Hoi An: history, workshops, and atmospheric walks

The main attraction is the Old Town itself. To visit it, a single ticket is purchased (120,000 dong), which allows you to see several historical houses, assembly halls, temples and museums of your choice. In addition:

  • Craft workshops: tailoring and shoe-making to order (the main hit!), lantern making, cooking classes.
  • Evening boat rides on the Thu Bon River with floating lantern releases.
  • Day trips from Hoi An: My Son ruins (UNESCO), Cham Island for diving.
Hoi An's Old Town is like an open-air museum

Many key regional attractions (Marble Mountains, My Son ruins) are located between Da Nang and Hoi An and are easily accessible from either city. So, no matter where you stay, you can visit them.

Food and shopping

Han Market in Da Nang is the center of local trade

Where is the food tastier and where is shopping more advantageous?

Food in Da Nang is more diverse in terms of formats: from street stalls to high-end restaurants. Lots of seafood restaurants. The downside — menus are often only in Vietnamese, English service not everywhere. Food in Hoi An is part of the cultural experience. Cafes and restaurants in historical buildings with river views are incredibly atmospheric, but in the evenings they are overcrowded, and kitchens may close early. Prices in Hoi An's tourist center are higher than in Da Nang.

Shopping also has its own specifics:

  • In Da Nang there are large shopping malls (Vincom Plaza, Lotte Mart), chain supermarkets (Winmart, Big C), Han Market for souvenirs and electronics. This is the place for everyday purchases, clothes, appliances.
  • In Hoi An there are no large malls. But here it's a paradise for those looking for unique items: dozens of tailor shops where they can sew a suit or dress to your measurements in 1-2 days, shoe-making workshops, souvenir shops with paintings, silk, lanterns. This is shopping for experiences and exclusives.

Shopping in Hoi An is a separate adventure

Budget and infrastructure

Overall, Da Nang offers a wider price range for accommodation — from hostels to luxury hotels of international chains. Since it's a big city, you can find an inexpensive hotel away from the beach and use taxis. In Hoi An, prices in the historical center are high, but you can save by staying at a guesthouse 10-15 minutes walk from the center or in the beach area.

Approximate daily budget per person (in VND and USD)
Expense item Da Nang (budget/comfort) Hoi An (budget/comfort) Note
Accommodation 300,000 – 1,000,000+
(11.4-37.98 USD)
300,000 – 1,000,000+
(11.4-37.98 USD)
In Hoi An, guesthouses are slightly cheaper, but boutique hotels in the center are expensive
Food 280,000 – 1,000,000
(10.64-37.98 USD)
150,000 – 600,000+
(5.7-22.79 USD)
In Hoi An you can eat cheaply at food courts, dinner in a nice place is expensive
Transport 20,000 – 200,000
(0.76-7.6 USD)
20,000 – 200,000
(0.76-7.6 USD)
Plus in Hoi An, expenses for taxis to the beach/center if you don't live in the center
Entertainment 0 – 500,000+
(up to 18.99 USD)
120,000 (ticket) – 500,000+
(4.56-18.99 USD)
In Hoi An, the single ticket (120,000 dong) is "mandatory"

Weather and seasons: when is the best time to go

The climate in Da Nang and Hoi An is identical, as they are in the same region. The choice of season is important for a comfortable vacation:

  • ☀ Dry season (high) from January to August: ideal time for beach vacation, especially from March to August, when the sea is calm. Sunny, little rain.
  • ⛈ Rainy season (low) from September to December: possible downpours, typhoons, sea is rough. Plus — low hotel prices. Important: In Hoi An, floods often occur during this period (the city is located on a river), and the historical center can be flooded.

Final verdict: who and when should choose what

To sum up, here are our recommendations based on years of experience visiting both places:

  • Choose Da Nang if:

    • You're going for a beach vacation and want the beach to be within walking distance.
    • Traveling with children — it's safer, more spacious, more entertainment for the whole family.
    • Value urban amenities, modern infrastructure, diverse shopping and restaurants.
    • Want easy access to the airport and other cities in Vietnam.
    • Plan to visit mountain attractions (Ba Na, Hai Van Pass).
  • Choose Hoi An if:

    • Your main goal is the history, culture and atmosphere of the old town.
    • You are a romantic or photographer, and are willing to put up with crowds for evening views with lanterns.
    • Want to have clothes or shoes custom-made — this is the local specialty.
    • You have enough time (from 3-4 days) to enjoy the city at different times of day and go to the beach.
    • Plan to stay in Hoi An's beach area and travel to the old town for excursions.
  • Ideal compromise:

Stay in Da Nang, and come to Hoi An for 1-2 day trips. This is the most popular and often the most logical option. You get the comfort of the beach resort Da Nang and the opportunity to walk around Hoi An, have dinner there and return by taxi (about 300,000 – 500,000 dong one way) to your hotel. This way, you avoid the evening hustle and bustle and high accommodation prices in Hoi An itself, but lose nothing.

Whichever option you choose, central Vietnam will not disappoint you. And to explore each city in more detail, read our full guides: all about Da Nang and all about Hoi An. Have a good trip!
