By Train 🚆

Evening train from Nha Trang — you sleep while being taken north

Traveling by train from Nha Trang to Hanoi is an opportunity to leisurely watch the changing landscapes of Vietnam: from the sea coast through mountain passes to the northern plains. Trains depart from Nha Trang Railway Station, which is very conveniently located — practically in the city center (view on map).

Wagon Classes and Buying Tickets

Train tickets, especially for sleeper wagons, are best bought in advance — at least 3-4 days, and a week in high season. In Nha Trang, this can be done:

  1. At Nha Trang Railway Station. The most reliable way. Ticket clerks usually speak a little English.
  2. At travel agencies in the city center. Convenient, but be prepared for a 10-20% markup. Always check the wagon class on the ticket!
  3. Through the aggregator website 12go.asia (requires a foreign bank card).

Main wagon classes (from cheapest to most expensive):

  • Hard Seat: Only for the most hardy. For 24+ hours — not recommended.
  • Soft Seat: Better, but sleeping will be uncomfortable.
  • Hard Sleeper: Three bunk beds without a door. Budget option for an overnight journey.
  • Soft Sleeper: Two bunk beds, has a door, power outlets. Our choice for the balance of price and comfort.
  • VIP Soft Sleeper: Maximum comfort for a couple or someone who wants privacy.

Our advice: choose a night train with a Soft Sleeper berth. You board in the evening, go to sleep, and by morning or closer to noon the next day you are in Hanoi, rested and without losing a day on the road.

By Bus 🚌

You can sleep in a sleeper bus, but space is a bit cramped

The most economical, but also the most challenging in terms of comfort way to get to Hanoi. Key point: for such a distance, take only a night sleeper bus (Sleeper Bus). A seated bus for 20+ hours is an ordeal that is hardly worth the small difference in price.

Bus Types and What to Choose

  • Regular Seated Bus: The cheapest, but the most uncomfortable option. Seats are narrow, don't recline much. Suitable only for very hardy and budget travelers.
  • Limousine Van: A minivan with increased comfort and massage seats. But they are rarely used for such a long distance; usually, this is an option for trips to Da Nang/Hue.
  • Sleeper VIP Bus: Semi-reclining or lying positions (as in the photo above). There are several rows of "beds". They provide a bottle of water and a wet wipe. This is a good way to save both time (travel at night) and money (don't spend on a hotel).
  • Sleeper VIP Bus with Cabins: The best option!!! Costs slightly more than a regular sleeper, but the comfort level is much higher. Here there are two rows of cabins (three in regular ones), and each is closed with a curtain like in a capsule hotel. There is often a toilet on board.

An important nuance of the route! Many buses from Nha Trang to Hanoi do not go directly. You may have a transfer in Da Nang on one ticket: you travel to Da Nang on one bus, and there transfer to another one going to Hanoi. This is normal practice, and the connection is usually organized, but there may be a pause of several hours due to the late arrival of another bus, though this is rare. When buying, clarify if it's a direct route.

Where Buses Depart From in Nha Trang

In Nha Trang, there are two main bus stations, but many tourist buses pick up passengers directly from hotels in the center or have their own pickup points. Clarify the departure place when buying!

  • Southern Bus Station (Nha Trang Southern Bus Station): New station far from the center (on the map). Get there by taxi (from 160,000 VND). Buses to the south often depart from here, but some companies also use it for routes north.
  • Northern Bus Station (North Nha Trang Bus Station): Also on the outskirts (on the map). Buses to Da Nang, Hue, and consequently to Hanoi, more often depart from here.
  • Carrier offices and travel agencies: The most convenient option. You buy a ticket at an agency on the main street (Tran Phu) or at the hotel, and they either pick you up from there or tell you where to come for boarding (often it's a gas station or a well-known hotel).

Tickets are easiest to buy at any travel agency on Tran Phu or through the website 12go.asia.

Price control! In our experience, at Russian-speaking offices in Nha Trang the price for a ticket to Hanoi may be inflated. It's worth asking at 2-3 places. Ticket offices at bus stations sell without markups, but getting there is inconvenient.

What to Choose: Our Experience and Recommendations

Having traveled this route in different ways, we have compiled our rating:

  1. Best balance (our choice): Night train in a Soft Sleeper compartment. You save a hotel night, sleep relatively comfortably, arrive right in the center of Hanoi. Plus — it's a real travel experience. We book tickets several days in advance.
  2. If time is more valuable than money: Plane. Expensive, but in 4-5 hours (transfer+flight) you are already in the capital. We watch for Vietjet promotions, but always consider baggage costs.
  3. If the budget is very limited: Night Sleeper Bus. Cheaper than a train, but comfort is much lower. Suitable for young and hardy travelers. We always take earplugs, a sleep mask, and a warm sweater.
  4. Not recommended: Seated Bus. The price difference with a sleeper is not that great to suffer for 24 hours in an uncomfortable seat. This is an extreme option.

We believe that the journey is part of the travel. Therefore, if time allows, the train from Nha Trang to Hanoi will give you much more impressions than a quick flight.
