If you are thinking about a trip to Da Nang with one main goal - to get out of the water only to eat and sleep, then this guide is for you. There will be no general phrases here. We have traveled all 30+ kilometers of Da Nang's coastline, overpaid for coconuts by the water, studied tide charts and felt the difference between seasons on our own skin.
Short answer: Yes, Da Nang is definitely worth going to for a beach vacation, but with a clear understanding of what you will get and what you will not. This is not a tropical paradise with turquoise water like in the Maldives, and not a party Nha Trang. This is something of its own, and for many - ideal.
Da Nang beaches: summary in 30 seconds
It's worth going if you're looking for: kilometers of almost empty white sand, a calm atmosphere without crowds, a gentle safe entrance for children, good beach infrastructure at Asian prices and the opportunity to go surfing.
Consider other options if you need: crystal clear water for snorkeling (the sea here often has suspended matter), vibrant nightlife and many foreign tourists or compatriots (there are almost none here), or you are planning a trip for September-December (season of waves and rain).
✔ Main advantages of Da Nang for beach lovers
1. Simply a fantastic amount of sand
This is the main argument. Only within the city - more than 15 kilometers of continuous sandy beach, and another 20 stretches towards Hoi An. And along this length, even at the peak of the season there are no crowds, rather the opposite. You will easily find your piece of shore. The sand is fine, light, pleasant.
2. Perfect balance of infrastructure and wilderness
Da Nang has a beach for every taste:
-
My Khe - for those who love comfort.
Sunbeds (40,000 dong / 1.52 USD), umbrellas, cafes along the promenade, lifeguards, showers, toilets. Gentle entrance to the water - a paradise for children. This is where the main resort life is concentrated.
-
Bac Mi An (China Beach) - for romantics and lovers of solitude.
Starts right after My Khe and stretches for 20 km of almost deserted shore. There is no infrastructure, but there is a feeling that the whole beach is only yours.
-
Son Tra Peninsula and Hai Van Pass - for adventure seekers.
Wild, hard-to-reach coves, reached by bike and on foot along trails. Beautiful, deserted, but without amenities.
3. Safe and predictable sea (but only in the right season!)
In the high season (March-August) the sea in Da Nang is often calm - waves are small and not dangerous. This is suitable for holidays with children, and on some beaches, for example in Da Nang Bay (also known as Red Beach) it is safe even with the smallest children. There are tides and ebbs, but their amplitude is small (about a meter), and they do not interfere with rest.
Important plus: on the city beach My Khe in the high season, swimming areas with lifeguard duty are organized, which adds peace of mind.
4. Prices that let you relax with your soul
Beach vacation here does not hit the budget. Prices for everything are fixed and transparent: they are indicated on signs, not named by vendors at random.
- Sunbed - 40,000 dong (1.52 USD, )see Vietnam currency and its exchange rate)
- Fresh chilled coconut – 30,000 (1.14 USD)
- Water 1.5 l. and soft drinks – 12,000 (0.46 USD)
- Beer 0.33l. - from 25,000 (0.95 USD)
- Foot wash - free.
- Shower - available at cafes, free if you order something.
At the same time, no one bothers you with intrusive trading.
✘ What NOT to expect from Da Nang beaches
1. Crystal clear, turquoise water all year round
The water in Da Nang is clean, but often not transparent. Due to the fine sand, even in calm weather the water has a slight suspension. This is not a place for snorkeling with bright fish near the shore. If it is important for you to see your toes standing waist-deep in water - this is not the place.
2. Guaranteed calm from September to December
This is critically important! The beach season in Da Nang is strictly divided into two periods:
- March-August (high season): Calm, sun, ideal conditions.
- September-December (low season): Strong waves, wind, frequent rain, dangerous rip currents. Swimming is possible only in designated areas under the supervision of lifeguards.
Coming in November hoping for 100% relaxation by a calm sea is a mistake. It's a matter of luck.
3. Lively partying and night parties on the shore
Da Nang is a city for a calm, family or romantic vacation. There are no beach parties and bars, bars on the embankment close relatively early, and night establishments with local color are not very suitable for tourists. If you need DJ sets, foam parties and crowds of partygoers - this is more like Nha Trang, or even better another country altogether.
4. Full "all inclusive" right by the water
Infrastructure exists, but it is "stretched" along a multi-kilometer shore. Do not expect that by getting out of the water in a random place, you will find a bar with cocktails 10 meters away. My Khe has everything, but to get to a cafe or toilet, sometimes you will have to take a walk. On other city beaches there is still nothing at all, with the exception of hotel areas and one club beach Tien Sa.
Which Da Nang beach to choose exactly for you?
To avoid making a mistake, use this simple recommendation table. We compiled it after walking and driving around all the local beaches many times.
| Who are you? | Your ideal beach in Da Nang | Why? | Important tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Families with children (especially small ones) | My Khe (central part) | Gentle sandy entrance, small waves (in season), lifeguards, cafes and toilets nearby. | In low season (Sep-Dec) due to waves it's better to go to Da Nang Bay (Red Beach) - it's always calm there. |
| Couples, looking for romance and solitude | Bac Mi An (China) or wild coves of Son Tra | Kilometers of deserted sand, stunning sunsets, atmosphere of "only us alone in the whole world". | Take water, food and an umbrella with you. No infrastructure. |
| Surfers and lovers of activities | My Khe (in wave season) or beaches near Hai Van | From September to December, My Khe has excellent waves for beginners. There are board rentals and schools. | For surfing, choose the low season. In high season the waves are "kiddy". |
| Budget travelers who only care about sleeping by the sea | Any section of My Khe away from the most promoted hotels | Sand and sea are free. A sunbed can be replaced with a large towel bought at the market. | You can live in guesthouses a couple of streets from the shore - this is many times cheaper, and it's a 5-minute walk to the sea. |
| Adventure seekers and Instagrammable views | Secret beaches on Hai Van Pass (Banana Beach, etc.) | Untouched nature, breathtaking views, feeling of a pioneer. | The road is difficult (hiking trails, 45-60 minutes descent). Not for daily rest, but for a day trip. |
When to go? Seasons are EVERYTHING
We repeat, because this is the most important point in making a decision. 90% of your impression depends on the season.
Best season for classic beach vacation (swimming, lying, children): March-August.
The sea is calm, sun, minimal rain. Perfect.
Season for surfing and discounts (but with risk): September-December.
Waves, wind, rain. Hotels are cheaper, but the weather is unpredictable, and even weather emergencies can be declared. Swimming is possible only with caution in designated areas.
Off-season (possible, but cool): January-February.
Little rain, but water and air are cooler (about 22-24°C). In the evenings you may need a sweater.
Final verdict: is it worth going to Da Nang for the beach?
Da Nang is an excellent and underrated choice for a beach vacation in Vietnam, but with a clear target audience.
Definitely "YES" if you:
- Want lots of space and hate crowding on the beach.
- Are traveling with children and are looking for a safe gentle entrance.
- Appreciate a calm atmosphere without noisy parties.
- Are ready to put up with imperfect water transparency in exchange for kilometers of sand and coziness.
- Are planning a trip strictly in the period from March to August.
More likely "NO" if you:
- Dream of turquoise clear water and snorkeling near the shore.
- Expect vibrant nightlife and parties on the sand from the resort.
- Are planning a vacation for October-November and only want to lounge in calm weather.
- Are looking for super-cheap "all inclusive" right at the water's edge.
Da Nang is not a universal resort that tries to be everything to everyone. It clearly knows its strengths: space, tranquility, safety and natural beauty. If this is what you are looking for, you will definitely not be disappointed.
