San Phra Kan (San Phra Kan or Phra Kahn Shrine) is a functioning temple, the main center of faith and worship for residents in the old town of Lopburi. Surprisingly, this is a temple of two religions at once: Buddhism and Hinduism.
San Phra Kan consists of two parts – the ruins of an ancient temple of the Khmer period and a modern sanctuary built in 1951, attached to the ruins. Inside is the four-armed body of the god Vishnu in the Lopburi-Khmer style with the attached head of the Buddha of the Ayutthaya era. And all this is located in the center of the road ring on the main road of the old town and opposite the main tourist temple Lopburi Prang Sam Jot.
In addition to being the most important place for believers, it is also the most popular place for monkeys and tourists to relax. There are just a huge number of monkeys here, like nowhere else in Lopburi. It is said that monkeys are attracted here by the fact that a long time ago giant fig trees grew on this place, which was the home of monkeys. But most likely the whole point is that they are fed here at the expense of the alms of believers, which is why they love this place so much.
Important! When visiting this temple and even while walking near it, be very careful. There are a lot of monkeys here, they behave very audaciously and aggressively: they tear things out, take off their clothes (caps, scarves, glasses), take away food. Therefore, you need to hide in a backpack all the things and objects that can be torn off or removed from you. It is absolutely not necessary to show monkeys food or drinks, because then they will almost certainly try to take it away from you.
