Beaches of Lanta Island in Thailand is exactly what tourists from all over the world come here for, fortunately so far in small numbers. That is why even at the peak of the season there are not so many beachgoers here, and you can always find a secluded place where there won't be a soul except you. Here you will not see an abundance of water activities and jet skis and bananas scurrying along the coast: all this is prohibited by local law, so the beaches of Lanta remain as untouched as possible and worthy of the title of "Bounty". Another feature of local beaches is the absence of ugly multi–storey buildings along the coastline, which is also prohibited: it is impossible to build houses higher than the palm trees surrounding them, and this is a maximum of three floors.
Almost all hotels and bungalows on Lanta are located on the west coast of the island. The only exceptions are a few hotels on the eastern shore in the old Town. At the same time, the most developed infrastructure and crowded beaches are located in the north of the west coast (this is the side closer to the Saladan marina and the mainland), but the further south, the quieter and more deserted it becomes.
There are almost no beaches on the east coast, mostly there are rocky shores and mangroves with an unpleasant clay bottom.
Here is a brief overview of all the main beaches/areas of the island in sequence from north to south so that you can choose the right one for yourself:
Saladan Village and Kawkwang Beach (Ban Saladan and Kawkwang beach)
Saladan and Kavkwang beach on the map
Ban Saladan is the capital of the island and the most developed place. All administrative and government institutions, hospitals, schools, markets, shops, inexpensive seafood restaurants, etc. are located here. There are several diving centers on the same street next to each other. Here is the main transport hub (Saladan pier and the pier from the small island of Lanta), and everyone who arrives on the island first of all gets to the village.
But as for the beaches, you should not consider this area as a good place to relax. Although Kavkwang beach is called a beach, in fact it is quite conditional: shallow depth, not the cleanest water, and proximity to a noisy and dirty village. But very close, within walking distance, is Klong Beach.
Klong (Klong Dao Beach)
The three-kilometer sandy beach of Klong Dao is located two kilometers from the village of Saladan. The most developed tourist area and the most crowded beach. There are a lot of hotels, restaurants and cafes.
The bay of the beach is protected on both sides by capes, which is why it is great for families with children, because it is safe to swim here. Hotels and bungalows are located right along the beach, medium and high price categories with their own territory, including five-star. Budget accommodation can be found along the main road Klong Dao Road, along which the main infrastructure of the area is also located: shops, pharmacies, ATMs, inexpensive cafes.
Long Beach (Long beach, Phra Ae)
The longest beach on the island is almost five kilometers, which is why even at the height of the season it does not seem crowded.
Long Beach is a little less developed than Klong, but still it is far from the wilderness. Along the main road there is the main infrastructure and inexpensive guest houses, from which you can get to the sea in a few minutes on foot. Prices are lower than in Klong, and in general there are much more budget housing offers here.
In general, we can say about Long Beach that it is a golden mean with average prices and a moderately developed infrastructure that will suit a tourist of any age and wealth.
Klong Kong (Klong Khong beach)
With a length of almost three kilometers, Klong Kong is one of the cheapest and youth areas, one can say the most backpacker. Even along the main road there is almost no infrastructure, except for a few shops and cafes located far from each other. It is very often chosen by thrifty tourists for recreation, because here you can find really cheap accommodation – from $ 5 per bed in a shared bungalow.
At the same time, Klong Kong is the best place for a night's rest. Here are the most stylish bars and restaurants, and they host real noisy parties. But what is good, because of the size of the beach, they do not interfere at all with those who have arrived here for a relaxing holiday.
The beach itself is very good here, but in the northern part there are a lot of stones dividing the coast into cozy coves.
Klong Nin (Klong Nin Beach, also Klong Hin)
Klong Nin Beach has a length of just under three kilometers. Very clean, beautiful, and very quiet among all the developed beaches of the island.
An asphalt road runs along the beach just a couple of dozen meters from the sandy strip, and hotels and hostels are located along it, some across the street from the beach. But, fortunately, the road is not at all busy, especially in the southern part of the district. There is not much budget accommodation here.
There are cafes, restaurants, bars, some right on the beach, but everything is minimal. There are no noisy parties here.
Kantiang (Ba Kantiang Bay)
Kantiang is perhaps the most beautiful beach on the island: a cozy kilometer-long bay is surrounded on all sides by green forest and hills, and mountains can be seen in the distance.
Hotels here are mostly expensive, four and five-star. But they are worth it, considering the views they offer on the beach and the surrounding area, because they are located on the slopes of the hills. There is practically no nightlife and entertainment here, except for the only bar on the beach that works late.
In general, this is just a heavenly place, but only for those who prefer silence, tranquility and privacy, and are willing to pay for it.
Nui Bay
A very secluded and beautiful bay with a beach length of only 150 meters, on which there is no infrastructure and hotels, and you can only get to this one on foot. From the road to the beach there is a path down the slope, about 100 meters. But when you overcome it, almost certainly the whole beach will be at your disposal
Waterfall Bay (Waterfall Bay, also Ao Klong Jark)
Waterfall Bay beach on the map
In Waterfall Bay there is a cozy beach with a length of about half a kilometer. Here is the village of Klong Jark of several houses, whose residents are busy working on the plantation, but in addition there is even one large hotel and two small bungalows, a couple of restaurants. From here you can also walk to the beach in Nui Bay.
There is an elephant camp nearby, from which elephant walks through the jungle to the only waterfall on the island.
Bambu Bay (Bamboo Bay, also Ao Mai Pai)
This is the southernmost beach of Lanta, with a length of just over half a kilometer. It is located in a sheltered, cozy bay, and there are a couple of mid-priced hotels here. Perhaps this is the most secluded and peaceful beach with hotels on Lanta, but apart from them there is nothing else here.
Old Town
The Old Town is the only tourist destination on the eastern shore. But you will not find any beaches here, this is an area for a completely different kind of recreation. If you want to plunge into the authenticity of a traditional Thai town, get to know the locals and traditions better, you can stay here. There are several inexpensive guest houses in the old town (perhaps the cheapest in all of Ostroh), you can rent a house or a room from local residents for a long time.
The old town is also the starting point for sea excursions to the eastern islands.
