Description and is it worth a visit

Assumption Catholic Cathedral

This is the main Catholic church in Thailand and the main church of the Archdiocese of Bangkok, an architectural monument. The Cathedral has twice hosted the Pope in Thailand: Pope John Paul II in 1984 and Pope Francis in 2019.

The original building of the temple was commissioned by the French missionary Father Pascal in 1809 and designed by the French architect who completed the construction of the cathedral in 1821 during the reign of King Rama II. The cathedral was named Assumption Cathedral in honor of the Virgin Mary, who is commemorated in the church during the feast of the Assumption, on St. Mary's Day on August 15.

Throughout the second half of the 19th century, the church and the surrounding area played an important role for all Christian missionaries arriving in Bangkok, especially after 1860. However, around 1909 or 1910, the church underwent a significant reconstruction, and was then rebuilt in Romanesque style between 1910 and 1918. In 1942, during World War II, nearby buildings were destroyed by Allied bombing, which led to serious damage to the church. Soon after, it underwent extensive restoration and was partially renovated in the 1980s and 1990s.

The temple is functioning and services (masses) are held here, it is visited by faithful Catholics of Bangkok. Tourists can also visit it freely. Just keep in mind that the church is not open all the time.

Класное место для тихого отдыха от суеты города. Внутри очень красиво и спокойно, архитектура впечатляет. Рядом есть несколько кафешек, где можно перекусить после посещения.
