Description and is it worth a visit

Teptidaram Temple

Tepthidaram Temple (Wat Thepthidaram Woraviharn or simply Thepthidaram Temple) – rarely visited by tourists, although it is located almost in the heart of Bangkok on the Ratanakosin Peninsula, surrounded by other popular temples and attractions. It really doesn't look very attractive, with dull architecture, which is decorated only with two towers in the form of cobs in the Ayutthaya style. However, like almost every temple in Bangkok, this one is no exception. It houses special statues of the Buddha.

The first of them is a small statue of the White Buddha Phraphutthathewawirat, carved from a single piece of white stone, presumably marble. King Rama III placed her in this temple. It is stored in a separate viharna (building). In another separate viharna there are 52 bronze gilded statues of Bhikkhunis, which means female nuns. It is believed that these are some of the oldest and rarest surviving statues of female nuns in the world, and their detailed history can be read on the information poster at the entrance.

Also on the territory of the temple is the museum of the famous Thai poet Sunthon Pu (Sunthon Phu). For some time he was a monk of this monastery, and then produced some of his most famous works. To be honest, the museum itself and the poet's history will be of little interest to tourists, but during his visit you can have a very close conversation with the monks. Since tourists are very rare here, the monks are happy to talk about the poet, like to talk about other topics, and even offer to meditate together. For this, they will be asked to leave a small donation for the temple.

🚶 How to get there

Teptidaram Temple is located in the historical part of Bangkok on the Ratanakosin Peninsula (temple on the map). If you are staying in tourist area khaosan Road, then you can walk here in 20 minutes, walk about one and a half kilometers.

You can get from other areas by taxi, buses or river transport, but there is no metro station nearby. A taxi from Pratunam district, for example, will cost from 200 baht.
