Almost all the sights of Arzamas are concentrated within the historical center of the city, which is located near the bus station and Cathedral Square. To get around them all will not be difficult on foot, at the same time during the walk you will be able to see the architecture of the old districts and streets of the city.
But do not think that there is nothing to see here except temples and architecture. In Arzamas there is a unique Museum of the Patriarchate, the Literary Museum of the writer Arkady Gaidar, two museums of M. Gorky. And be sure to check out the local history and Art Museum. Nearby in the village of Peshelan there is a very interesting Museum of mining, located in a real gypsum mine, and there is also a petting zoo "safari".
As for entertainment, unfortunately, this sphere is very poorly developed in Arzamas. There are traditional Entertainments inherent in any small provincial town: there are nightclubs, bars, baths and saunas, a park of culture and Recreation. Gaidar with attractions. But there is nothing aimed specifically at tourists. There is not even a walking street with cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and the like, where you could walk in the evening to a tourist. Children can only be taken to the park. Gaidara, where you can ride on simple attractions, and swim on a water bike on the lake.
The best option to get acquainted with the sights of Arzamas are organized sightseeing tours. Unfortunately, we did not find any offers of sightseeing tours directly in Arzamas, and all sightseeing tours start only from Nizhny Novgorod. And here is a list and description of all the sights of Arzamas with an indication of their opening hours, cost and how to get to them:
Cathedral Square
This is the main square of Arzamas, the heart of the city and its iconic landmark. Although it would be more correct to say that this is the place where most of the attractions are concentrated, because it is here that all the main temples of the city are located: the Ecumenical Cathedral, The Cathedral of the resurrection of Christ, the Church of the icon of the mother of God, the Nicholas convent and many more churches and temples that are City celebrations and festivals are also held here. Most often, most guests of the city are limited to viewing the Square and its attractions, and continue their journey. On the square you can move completely freely and inspect everything you want. What is convenient, you can park your car on the Square, and from here you can start a walking tour of all the sights of Arzamas. Learn more about Sobornaya Square here.

Temples and monasteries in Arzamas
Arzamas is called the city of 33 churches and 4 monasteries, since there were so many Orthodox buildings here at the beginning of the XIX century. Now there are also a lot of them, and many of them are unique and with their own history. So, in the center is the St. Nicholas monastery, founded by Ivan the terrible himself in 1580. And the main decoration of the city is the majestic Resurrection Cathedral of 1814 in honor of the victory of Russia in the war with Napoleon.
We recommend visiting the churches of Arzamas from the Cathedral Square, which offers the best view of most of the city's churches and monasteries. All temples and monasteries of Arzamas are open to tourists during the day. Do not forget that at the entrance men should remove the headdress, and women, on the contrary, cover their heads. You can not go inside in provocative clothes: with open shoulders, in shorts or short skirts. Photographing inside is generally prohibited, but you can ask permission to take a few pictures from the attendants. Learn more about the temples of Arzamas here.

While walking around Arzamas, pay attention to a large number of old buildings and houses made in traditional Russian architecture. Gostiny Ryad shopping street
This street is considered the most interesting among the historical streets of the city. The architecture of the past centuries has really been preserved here and sometimes it seems that one has only to change the signs, and you will find yourself in the 19th century. It can even be said that this is a tourist street, since it is one of the few places in Arzamas where tourists will be interested in walking.
But do not expect too much from the living room row. This street is not pedestrian, there is no abundance of cafes and restaurants, and an assortment of shops behind the old facades sells industrial goods and consumer goods. In addition, it is not very convenient to walk along it: the sidewalks are broken, and the road is filled with cars.

Arzamas Museum of history and art
This small museum tells about the history of the city and the district, and, in our opinion, is a must-visit. The collection includes more than thirty thousand exhibits on the following topics: archeology, collection of fabrics, porcelain, numismatics, old printed books, products of Arzamas Masters, painting, graphics. Of course, not all the exhibits are exposed for review, but the four sections of the museum on two floors quite fully tell about the life of the city from the time of its formation to the modern period, as well as about the features of Arzamas, including the famous "Arzamas goose". In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are master classes on making a twisted doll, a goose in the origami technique, greeting cards, felt boots, a scarf in the technique of "printed fabric", paintings in the technique of wool watercolor. Museum Of The Russian Patriarchate
This is a unique museum that appeared with the cooperation of the church and the state. The exposition is located in the former building of the city hall (magistrate), the only one preserved in Russia in its original form, and this already deserves the attention of tourists. As for the museum's exposition, it is dedicated to the life and work of Patriarchs of Moscow and all Russia Nikon and Sergius, as well as patriarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church of the XX – beginning of the XXI centuries: Alexy I, Pimen, Alexy II and Kirill. The museum's collection is not very large, but occupies two floors of the building. Here are the personal belongings of the Patriarchs, photographs, household items, a description of their life history. There is a separate section devoted to the history of the city hall.

Merchant Budylin's twin houses
Two ancient twin houses are located next to the Cathedral Square and are an architectural landmark and heritage monument. Two of these completely identical houses were built by merchant Ivan Vasilyevich Podsosov in the early XIX century for his sons, and their current name of the name "merchant Budylin" was presumably named after their last owner. What is remarkable is that although the houses look like stone, they are actually built of wood, only the facade imitates stone. This unique museum operates at the gypsum factory of the village of Peshelan, 120 kilometers from the center of Nizhny Novgorod. Nowhere else in Russia can you visit a real gypsum mine (the museum is located in its inactive branch - a cave at a depth of 70 meters underground), get acquainted with the basics of mining, see with your own eyes how gypsum and other minerals are mined underground.
It will be interesting for every tourist to visit this museum, because it is really unique and very interesting, just breathtaking. Gaidar Literary Museum
The museum is dedicated to the life and work not only of the famous children's writer of the Soviet era A. P. Gaidar, the author of the story "Timur and his team" and others, but also to the history of his family, including the famous descendants of Timur Arkadyevich and Yegor Timurovich. The writer's family lived in Arzamas from 1912 to 1918, when the writer, who then bore the real name Golikov, was still very young. The museum consists of two floors, the lower one is dedicated to Gaidar. The exhibition presents personal belongings of the writer and his family, manuscripts, photographs, documents. On the second floor there are author's exhibitions of local artists.
This is not to say that you should definitely go to this museum specifically, but if you find yourself nearby, it is quite possible to look, especially since the museum is looked after by very enthusiastic and friendly people.
