What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
On June 4, 1988, a great tragedy occurred near the Arzamas railway station. During the movement of freight train No. 3115 on the railway, three cars with explosives exploded. As a result of the explosion of 120 tons of various explosives intended for mining, 91 people were killed, including 17 children, about 1,500 people were injured, 151 houses were destroyed.
It is believed that this tragedy was one of the reasons in the chain of events that led to the collapse of the USSR. There are versions that the explosion was sabotage in order to undermine confidence in the authorities, but the final conclusions about its cause have not been made. We advise you to read information on this topic on the internet before visiting the memorial.
A chapel was built at the site of the explosion and a memorial was erected. It symbolically depicts the metal of the car twisted by the explosion, and the clock in its center froze at the mark corresponding to the exact time of the incident. Every year on June 4, mourning events are held here.
