Temples and monasteries in Arzamas

What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Arzamas, first of all, will be more interesting to tourists who love the Orthodox history and culture of Russia, because it is called the city of 33 churches and 4 monasteries, since there were exactly so many Orthodox buildings here at the beginning of the XIX century. Now there are also a lot of them, and many of them are unique and with their own history. So, in the center is the St. Nicholas Monastery, founded by Ivan the Terrible himself in 1580. And the main decoration Arzamas is the majestic Resurrection Cathedral on Cathedral Square, built in 1814 in honor of Russia's victory in the war with Napoleon.

We recommend visiting the temples of Arzamas from Cathedral Square, which offers the best view of most of the city's churches and monasteries. We (the authors of the site) managed to see 9 from the square at once, but perhaps you can see more from different viewing points. After Cathedral Square, you can go to the bus station, next to which is the Church of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Gate Church of St. George the Victorious, the Chapel of the Saviour of the Uncreated Image, the Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God and the monument to Sergius Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. If you walk further along Lenin Street, you will get to two more beautiful temples: the Church of the Nativity of Christ and the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God. Back to the Cathedral Square, you can return through Uritsky Street, where there is a small Temple in Honor of the Entrance of the Lord to Jerusalem, famous for the fact that here, with the blessing of St. Seraphim of Sarov, Blessed Pelagia (Pelageya Ivanovna Serebrennikova-Surina) began to carry her prayer labors.

And this is not a complete list of Arzamas temples. If you are interested in others, we advise you to arm yourself with a navigator (maps in your smartphone), and see the ancient church of Elijah the Prophet of the XVIII century, the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit with a miraculous icon, the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan and others.

All temples and monasteries of Arzamas are open to tourists during the daytime. Do not forget that when entering, men should take off their headgear, and women, on the contrary, cover their heads. You can not go inside in provocative clothes: with open shoulders, in shorts or short skirts. Photographing inside is usually prohibited, but you can ask permission to take a few pictures from the attendants.
